Former Nebraska baseball player Brice Matthews hits two home runs in victory over Arizona
Have yourself a day, Brice Matthews! He has his 1st and 2nd career home runs tonight 👏 Former Husker Brice Matthews came alive on Monday night in his fifth career MLB game. Backed by his first two home runs in his MLB career, Matthews helped the Houston Astros to a 6-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Houston, Texas native finished 2-for-4 in the Astros' win after finishing his first four games with only one hit. His two home runs earned him five RBIs on the night. Matthews jump-started Houston's offense by sending a three-run shot over the wall with two outs in the top of the second, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead. The Astros added another run later on, but Arizona closed the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth. Matthews then drove in his second home run of the game in the seventh, this time a two-run blast to bring Houston's lead to three. With the win, Matthews takes another significant step in his MLB career. Houston drafted him 28th overall in the 2023 MLB draft. Matthews then slashed .283/.400/.476 with 10 homers, 39 RBIs, and 25 steals for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, Houston's Triple-A team. His play earned him a spot in the MLB All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta, but he was officially called up to the Astros on July 11 and made his major league debut that same day. At Nebraska, Matthews batted .359 in his senior year, which included 20 home runs. He also stole 20 bases, becoming the first Husker in school history to achieve that feat. Former Nebraska volleyball player to train for LA Olympics in 2028
A former Nebraska Cornhusker and professional indoor volleyball player is making a transition to the beach. Ally Batenhorst is pairing with reigning beach volleyball world champion Sara Hughes, leading up to the LA 2028 Olympics. Battenhorst spent the last year playing for the Omaha Supernovas in the Pro Volleyball Federation. The former Husker told NBC 4 Los Angeles that she's excited to make this change in her volleyball career. "I would say it's like a completely different sport. You have to learn little things like wind and you're outside and it's only two of you, so little things like that are an adjustment for sure. But at the end of the day, it's volleyball." Battenhorst played at Nebraska from 2021 to 2023, participating in both indoor and beach volleyball. She would transfer to USC for the 2024 season and would be named an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention. Hughes began looking for a new partner after suffering from an Achilles tendon injury, and her 2024 Olympic partner, Kelly Chen, left to partner with Molly Shaw. In his three seasons with the Huskers, Tominaga scored 1,074 points and finished seventh in school history for career 3-pointers, with 178 made. In his final season with the Huskers, he averaged 15.1 points per game, helping the team to a 23-11 record and a third-place Big Ten finish. A former Nebraska running back has been named the greatest draft pick at his draft slot. ESPN's Ben Solak selected Roger Craig as the greatest No. 49 draft pick in NFL history. Craig was the first player in NFL history to have 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season (1985). The Davenport, Iowa native played at Nebraska from 1979-1982 and was a second-round selection in the 1983 draft by the San Francisco 49ers. In his four seasons at Nebraska, he ran for 2,446 yards and 26 touchdowns on 407 carries. Craig's professional career ended with the Minnesota Vikings in 1993.
