Crust & Crumb to create 120 jobs in Co Cavan

RTÉ News03-06-2025
Pizza maker Crust & Crumb is to double the size of its production facility at Ballyconnell in Co Cavan.
The company said it is creating 120 jobs, which will allow it to support its continued business expansion with supermarket chain Tesco.
Crust & Crumb makes 30 different varieties of pizza for Tesco with five new premium pizza lines landing on shelves in recent weeks.
The new €12.5m investment in Ballyconnell will increase the site capacity from 40,000 to 80,000 square foot.
282 people are currently employed at the Co Cavan facility, with a further 120 jobs to be added once the new build is finished later this year.
The partnership between Tesco and Crust & Crumb began five years ago when the retailer looked to bring production of its pizza range to Ireland. It saw 35% year-on-year volume growth in 2024 and the annual contract is now worth over €10m.
Mark McCaffrey CEO, Crust & Crumb, said the relationship with Tesco has grown from strength to strength over the past five years.
"The support from retailers like Tesco enables us to make the necessary investments needed to expand and grow. Brexit presented many challenges as we know but also offered some great opportunities to home-grown Irish suppliers like ourselves," he added.
Joe Manning, Commercial Director at Tesco, said the partnership with Crust & Crumb highlights Tesco's long-standing commitment to supporting Irish suppliers and helping to grow jobs in local communities.
"The quality of the products that Crust & Crumb produce for us means we can ensure that our customers have access to the finest premium products, made locally," he added.

Roscommon company signs €1.2m deal with ALDI for biochar

ALDI has announced a new €1.2 million partnership with Arigna Fuels, a family-run business from Arigna, Co. Roscommon for the supply of biochar. The two-year deal will see Arigna Fuels' Harvest Flame, a low-emission, renewable heating product made from organic plant-based materials, available in all 164 ALDI stores nationwide starting this August. Over the past year, the product has been available as a 'Specialbuy' at ALDI, and through this new contract ALDI and Arigna Fuels will deepen the partnership. Based in Arigna, Co. Roscommon, Arigna Fuels currently employs 45 staff, and produces sustainable, quality fuels. The Harvest Flame product is made from 100% renewable raw materials in accordance with the Air Pollution Act 1987 (Solid Fuels) Regulations 2022 and manufactured in Ireland. The company has recently made a significant investment in building Europe's largest biochar production facility in Roscommon to support the creation of this new product. Harvest Flame is designed for use in stoves, open fires, and outdoor fire pits. It is said to offer a higher heat output than traditional solid fuels such as season timber, wood chips, or pellets. Barry Kirwan, buying director at ALDI Ireland and Brendan Layden, managing director, Arigna Fuels The company has said that thanks to its low moisture and ash content, it also significantly reduces emissions and particulates – making it a cleaner, more efficient alternative for Irish households. The launch of Harvest Flame at ALDI's stores across Ireland is part of the retailer's commitment to offer practical and accessible solutions to climate-conscious customers across Ireland. Harvest Flame is manufactured from olive stones which are a by-product in the production of olive oil. The olive fruit is harvested annually, and trees are not required to be felled. Buying director, ALDI Ireland, Barry Kirwan said: 'We're excited to partner with Arigna through this €1.2 million initiative, which reflects our ongoing dedication to sustainability and supporting local Irish suppliers. "At ALDI, we are committed to making sustainability affordable for our customers, so shoppers can feel confident they are making responsible, sustainable choices when they shop with us. 'For the past year, we've been working closely with the Arigna team to bring their high-quality, renewable product to our shelves across Ireland. "We're committed to delivering benefits to both our customers and the environment and look forward to supplying Arigna's sustainable products to customers," Kirwan said. Commercial director of Arigna Group, Conor Layden said: 'We are delighted to announce our partnership with ALDI to bring Harvest Flame, our sustainable biomass product, to households across the country. 'This partnership represents a strategic advancement in our commercial expansion and reinforces our commitment to delivering renewable, low-emission heating solutions. "Harvest Flame is engineered for efficiency and sustainability, offering a reliable alternative to traditional solid fuels while supporting Ireland's transition to a low-carbon economy.'

Profits down at Novartis Ireland to €8.4m as firm ups R&D spend

Pre-tax profits at the Irish arm of Swiss-headquartered pharmaceutical giant, Novartis, last year declined by 25% to €8m as the company increased its R&D spend. New accounts filed by Novartis Ireland Ltd show that the company recorded the drop in pre-tax profits as revenues declined by 10% from €268.3m to €242.3m. Novartis Ireland is a significant employer in the healthcare industry here with over 1,000 employed in Dublin. The accounts show that revenues from the sale of goods declined from €139.86m to €137.55m while revenues from supply of business services decreased from €128.46m to €104.77m. The directors state that revenues declining in pharma products sales were due to price and volume erosion of mature products. Turnover relating to Novartis Corporate Centre (NOCC) services decreased by 18% driven primarily by the reduction in functions related to Novartis's global initiative which launched in 2022 targeting a more focused pharmaceutical offering. The company has a significant R&D arm in Ireland with numbers employed in R&D last year increasing from 224 to 270. Last year, Novartis Ireland increased the R&D spend rising from €26.4m to €34.9m and the company booked an R&D credit of €4.5m in the profit and loss account. Overall numbers employed at Novartis Ireland Ltd reduced from 1,024 to 1,010 last year and the company also employed 663 in 'general and administration', 72 in marketing, sales and distribution and five in production and supply. Staff costs last year declined from €138.8m to €123.98m that included €95.5m in wages and salaries and €4.7m in share-based payments. Directors' pay increased from €992,000 to €1.35m made up of €1.27m in emoluments and €76,000 in pension contributions. They said: 'We have combined our former Novartis Technical Operations and Customer and Technology Solutions units to create a new operations unit called operations. This new unit seeks to provide a stronger and simpler operational backbone that can accelerate multiple technology transformation initiatives more efficiently, create novel digital solutions at scale, and increase productivity, while maintaining industry-leading quality and service levels." During the year, the company launched two new medicines aimed at tackling cancer, Luxturna and Leqvio. Under the heading of patient expiration and product competition, the directors said: 'The Irish government continues to closely monitor pharmaceutical pricing and profitability, with pressure to control spending on HSE medicines.' They state that the company 'manages these risks by having a strong pipeline, ensuring that it brings innovative products to market and using competitive pricing strategies while closely monitoring costs'. Shareholder funds totalled €88.8m that included accumulated profits of €51.9m.
