Animal lovers call for action after tied-up dog dies in Chatsworth
Residents of Chatsworth, Durban, have called for the arrest of a Moorton man after his dog was tied to a gate, allegedly by him, leading to its horrific death.
Rising Sun reports that, according to the senior director and founder of the Blue Bundu Brigade, Karen Janisch, the dog stood outside for over 11 hours, exposed to the weather, without food or water, and unable to lie down.
'It is alleged that the dog was out on the road. The owner beat him for this, and in the dog's defence, he bit his owner. He tied the dog to the security gate on a short rope with no food, no water, and no shelter. He was exposed to the cold during the night, exposed to full sun during the day. He was exhausted. Many people let this boy down, from his owner, the owner's family, the neighbours, and all those who saw and turned a blind eye, simply because they do not want to get involved.
'This was also a case where the SPCA was phoned numerous times, people knew the circumstances, and nobody helped. Why did someone not climb into the property and assist? If this were a child, would the result be the same? This behaviour is unacceptable and should not be entertained. The death of this dog could have been avoided and should not be accepted or tolerated. From what I have heard, this is a family man who was part of a political party. This individual has violated a number of animal cruelty laws, and he needs to be punished for his crimes,' Janisch alleged.
Local animal activist Pat Naidoo spoke about the high number of animal cruelty cases in the area.
'There are countless cases of cruelty, neglect, and abandonment we are facing daily due to owners taking on dogs for guarding purposes or as a companion for children, but are not prepared for the commitment towards that animal. There are countless deceased, unclaimed animals on the Higginson Highway. Animals are dumped late at night in isolated areas. Animals are chained for guarding purposes with no shelter – they are even fed scraps. There is no socialisation, which is the biggest contributor to vicious dogs.
'Many sick and injured animals are suffering in pain with no vet care, and that is cruelty. The community is urged to report incidents of animal cruelty to the SPCA through a phone call or email. Please do not ignore animal suffering. Residents wanting to contribute to the welfare of animals in the Chatsworth area can enlist on our working committee and volunteers list, as Chatsworth is a vast area and cases are countless. We can voice for the voiceless, but it's not much without action,' Naidoo said.
The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took the dog away after its death and is investigating the case.

A man was sentenced to life imprisonment after murdering his partner in early May 2025. The Free State High Court handed down the sentence to Abel Serame Mathige (39), who was found guilty of murdering his partner, 51-year-old Anna Motaung, after assaulting her. She later succumbed to her injuries at Boitumelo Regional Hospital. Police responded to a report about a patient who passed away following an alleged assault by their partner. Upon arrival, the police were escorted to the body of the deceased, identified as Motaung, who had been declared dead by the hospital. A 57-year-old man allegedly murdered her partner at an automotive dealership in Mthatha on Saturday, 31 May 2025. According to a police statement, the deceased went to the dealership, where her partner is an employee at. The two lovebirds got into a heated argument where the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim and took her to a hospital. Initially, the suspect said that thugs assaulted her lover near the dealership. The police statement mentioned, 'The suspect visited the victim in the hospital, bringing her refreshments. The victim subsequently became sick and ultimately died at approximately 13:55 that same day.' The postmortem results are said to reveal the cause of the victim's death. The police arrested the suspect on Friday, 6 June 2025. A manhunt has been launched after the dead bodies of a couple were discovered at a residence in Sekonye village, Limpopo. A worried family member went to the residence where her relative was after she could not reach him on his phone. Upon arriving, she discovered the lifeless body of her relative and his 34-year-old partner. Initial investigations reveal that both the victims had sustained gunshot wounds. Additionally, a firearm, believed to have been used in carrying out the murder, was found at the scene. 'The motive behind the tragedy remains unclear; however, domestic violence cannot be ruled out as a possible factor,' read the statement. A case of murder and an inquest has been opened while investigations continue. Update: Community holds emotional vigil for Brakpan teen killed in crash involving 12-year-old driver
A sombre atmosphere prevailed this afternoon at the place in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, where 14-year-old Malcolm Booysen died yesterday after being struck by a vehicle driven by a 12-year-old child. Brakpan Herald reports that friends, family and well-wishers wrote messages on a large wooden cross and laid down flowers. Malcolm's grieving parents Helen-Ann and Quinton Booysen were comforted by people at the scene. Helen cried inconsolably before a scripture reading and prayer were held. Malcolm's brothers Austin (18), Jason (11) and Jacques (9) took turns writing messages on the wooden cross for their brother. His grandfather André Booysen (66) told the Brakpan Herald the family is still in shock and trying to make sense of the tragic event that claimed Malcolm's life. Earlier today, Brakpan Herald reported that, according to City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department Accident Bureau were summoned to an accident at the corner of Northdene Avenue and Madeley Street at about 13:45 yesterday. 'The officers found the lifeless body of a 14-year-old pedestrian, who was declared deceased on scene by paramedics,' says Dlamini. 'Also on the scene, the officers found a Mazda that allegedly bumped the pedestrian, driven by a 12-year-old driver. 'The driver was handed in, accompanied by his guardian, to the Brakpan SAPS. 'It is alleged that the driver used the motor vehicle and disobeyed a stop sign and collided into the pedestrian.'
