The coronal loops, found in the Sun's outer layer, are arc-like, beautiful structures of hot plasma that glow at a temperature over a million degrees. Their miniature counterparts are about 3,000-4,000 kilometres long (roughly the distance from Kashmir to Kanyakumari).
However, they have a width of fewer than 100 kilometres, making them challenging to study. They stay hidden in the lower layers of the Sun's atmosphere and were mostly unresolved by earlier telescopes.
To catch these elusive structures in action, astronomers at the IIA used high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy.
"These tiny loops live fast - and die young, lasting only a few minutes, making it extremely difficult to observe them and interpret their physical origins," said Annu Bura, a doctoral student at IIA.
"Although they are small, these loops punch above their weight when it comes to understanding the Sun. They offer a new window into how magnetic energy is stored and released in the solar atmosphere on small scales," she added.
For the study, published in The Astrophysical Journal, the team used a combination of cutting-edge telescopes to investigate these small-scale coronal loops. They combined data from the Goode Solar Telescope at BBSO, NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) to explore these loops across multiple wavelengths.
"Our multi-instrument observation allowed us to analyse the loops not only in visible light but also in ultraviolet and extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths, revealing their behaviour across the chromosphere, transition region, and corona, the different layers of the Sun's atmosphere," Bura said.
The H-alpha spectral line from Hydrogen atoms is a key line for probing the solar chromosphere, which is just above the visible surface of the Sun.
The team found that in the redder or longer wavelength part of this line, these loops appear as bright, delicate arcs similar to coronal loops, and these were seen very clearly for the first time.
Further, to understand the plasma temperature inside these loops, the team used an advanced technique called Differential Emission Measure analysis.
The results showed plasma temperatures soaring above several million degrees -- hot enough to shine in the extreme ultraviolet, visible in SDO's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly.
The proposed 2-metre aperture National Large Solar Telescope (NLST), planned near Pangong Lake in Ladakh -- could help unlock even more secrets hidden within these small-scale solar features, said the team.

(NASA via The New York Times) Scientists have announced signs of a possible new planet around Alpha Centauri A, part of the star system nearest to us. The candidate, informally named Alpha Centauri Ab, would orbit in the habitable zone, where liquid water could exist. The find was made using the James Webb Space Telescope in August 2024. Webb's Mid-Infrared Instrument, equipped with a coronagraph to block out starlight, revealed a faint object orbiting at around twice the Earth–Sun distance. At that separation, a planet could be warm enough for water, a tantalising prospect so close to home. What complicates the story is that the planet seemed to vanish. Webb picked up the faint signal in 2024 but saw nothing in follow-up observations in February and April 2025.'We are faced with the case of a disappearing planet!' said Aniket Sanghi of the California Institute of Technology, who led the study. His team ran computer models of millions of possible orbits to see what might explain the signal. 'We found that in half of the possible orbits simulated, the planet moved too close to the star and wouldn't have been visible to Webb in both February and April 2025,' Sanghi models also lined up with a 2019 detection by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, which adds weight to the idea that this planet might be real, simply slipping in and out of view as it traces an elliptical path around its star. Webb's data points to a world about the size of Saturn. Unlike Earth, it would be a gas giant, and so not directly habitable. But astronomers note that large moons around such planets could, in theory, provide conditions suitable for Beichman of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory described the potential significance. 'This would become a touchstone object for exoplanet science, with multiple opportunities for detailed characterisation by Webb and other observatories,' he Centauri is not just any star system. Sitting about four light years away, it is the nearest trio of stars to us, made up of Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B, and Proxima Centauri. Proxima already has known planets, one of which orbits in its habitable zone, but this new candidate would be the closest planet ever directly imaged around a Sun-like star. That makes it a prime target for studying how planetary systems form and evolve near stars like our system itself is tricky to observe. Alpha Centauri A and B sit close together, their light overlapping. Untangling faint planetary signals from the glare of two bright stars is a technical feat, and part of the reason astronomers tread carefully before declaring this a confirmed case is not closed. With Webb's observations limited by the timing of its view and the planet's possible orbit, astronomers will need more chances to watch Alpha Centauri A. If the planet exists, it should eventually emerge again from the star's upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, expected to launch in 2027, could add critical evidence by providing visible-light observations to complement Webb's infrared now, the world nearest to us remains a mystery. A Saturn-sized neighbour in the habitable zone of Alpha Centauri A might be waiting to be confirmed. As Sanghi put it, the planet may have slipped from sight, but if it is real, it should reveal itself again in the years ahead.

But as the distance separating them gradually narrowed, the black hole's immense gravitational pull appears to have distorted the star – stretching it out from its spherical shape – and siphoned off material before causing it to explode. 'We caught a massive star locked in a fatal tango with a black hole," said astrophysicist Alexander Gagliano of the U.S. National Science Foundation's Institute for AI and Fundamental Interactions located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, lead author of the study published this week in the Astrophysical Journal, who was quoted by Reuters. 'After shedding mass for years in a death spiral with the black hole, the massive star met its finale by exploding. It released more energy in a second than the sun has across its entire lifetime," Gagliano added. The explosion occurred about 700 million light-years from Earth. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km). How AI spotted the supernova What began like a typical supernova soon deviated. The light from the explosion re brightened after the initial burst, producing a double-peaked light curve—a highly unusual behaviour in supernova observations. An AI system was crucial in spotting this event early. It flagged unusual light patterns months before the star's final explosion, allowing astronomers to follow it through every phase, according to reports and science journals. How much energy did it release? The explosion released more energy in just one second than the Sun will produce over its entire lifetime. The aftermath continued to emit light as the ejected material crashed into surrounding stellar debris. What really must have happened? Stellar Instability Triggered by Distortion: The gravitational stress caused by the black hole may have destabilized the star, causing it to explode, with the black hole then consuming the remnant. Complete Tearing-Apart (Spaghettification): Alternatively, the black hole may have ripped the star apart before any traditional supernova explosion occurred. Either way, the black hole ends up larger. The Earth's atmosphere refracts or bends, the sunlight before it reaches the Moon, changing how the sunlight colors the Moon. A total lunar eclipse is when the Earth's shadow completely covers the Moon's surface. Although sunlight still reaches the moon, it first passes through the Earth's atmosphere, which filters and bends the light. Because the Earth's atmosphere scatters the shorter wavelengths, only red hues can fall on the Moon, allowing it to take on that color dramatically.
