LR Discovery celebrates 35 years with Tempest Edition

NZ Autocar25-05-2025
Land Rover's Discovery line-up is refreshed for 2025. The headline act is the new Tempest Edition, the most upmarket Discovery offered yet. Thirty-five years in the making, the Tempest brings a mix of luxury design, premium materials, and rugged versatility.
Tempest was the codename for the second-generation Discovery's development programme in 1998. Now revived for this new edition, it signals a move upmarket with a new identity. A distinguishing feature is the Petra Copper Gloss roof. There is also copper detailing on the grille, wing vents, lower bumper inserts and Discovery badging. The 22-inch alloy wheels feature matching copper-tinted lacquer. Narvik Gloss Black is available as a roof colour option for those wanting a stealthier look.
The cabin features Ebony Windsor leather upholstery, Shadow Aluminium trim, and Tempest badging on the puddle lamps, B-pillars, and treadplates.
This vehicle takes aim at active families who don't want to compromise on comfort or capability.
Ben Montgomery, General Manager of Jaguar Land Rover New Zealand, said the Tempest edition is ideal for Kiwis. He said: 'It's luxurious, beautifully finished, and ready for anything. It's a vehicle that really speaks to the way Kiwi families live: active, adventurous and always on the go.'
Beyond the Tempest, the full Discovery range has been updated to include three models for the New Zealand market: D250 Dynamic SE – $148,900
D350 Dynamic HSE – $164,900
D350 Tempest Edition – $184,900
All variants now benefit from enhanced specification and equipment levels.
In line with this, Land Rover has introduced three new accessory packs. The Beach Days pack includes a collapsible boot organiser, tailgate and side window sunshades, all-weather mats, and a roof rack for kayaks and surfboards.
For longer sorties, the Road Trip pack adds seatback organisers, a centre armrest cooler, an electric cool bag, roof cross bars and a roof box. All are designed to keep journeys calm and clutter-free. And thirdly, the Snow Days pack ensures winter-ready versatility, with ski/snowboard carriers, rubber loadspace protection, mudflaps, and a snow traction system.
These join existing favourites like the For Dogs pack – featuring a portable rinse system, pet carrier, water bowl and quilted boot liner. There's also the Biking Adventures pack with rubber floor mats, side steps, and both roof- and tow-mounted bike carriers.
Discovery's off-road credentials remain and all models offer a 3500kg braked towing capacity. Systems like Terrain Response 2, Advanced Tow Assist, and All Terrain Progress Control ensure drivers can tackle tricky situations with confidence. And with a wading depth of up to 900mm, rivers and flooded roads should not prove an obstacle.
Joelle Taylor, Head of Discovery Strategy, Product and Services said: 'Discovery is the perfect choice for those who enjoy spontaneous adventures with the whole family. With its vast, versatile, seven-seat interior and exceptional capability, I know we will reach our destination in comfort and with everything we need.'

On The Up: Historic Land Rover ‘Twenty' completes 2168km charity drive for heart research

Twenty was the 20th Land Rover made in the historical Jaguar Land Rover factory in Solihull, Birmingham and was shipped out to Wellington on September 16, 1948, for use as a demonstrator vehicle. 'After her demonstrator days, Twenty spent her working life in Taihape until acquired by Taihape Automotive Specialists in 1984, where she remained partially dismantled for 30 years, before Peter bought her in 2014.' In Dunedin, he carried out a restoration that Paton said was a magnificent job, with every effort made to preserve her original parts, bodywork and patina. 'She really is a rare and authentic vehicle which played a major part in New Zealand's post-war agricultural history.' A part of New Zealand's agricultural past After World War II, Rover was exporting most new Land Rovers to get subsidies from the UK Government for obtaining steel, which was scarce post-war. 'The Land Rover was the first civilian 4WD vehicle. 'Such vehicles had only been available to the armed forces previously. 'Twenty toured New Zealand showing off her moves to the rural communities.' Described as a 'British version of a Jeep' in an article in the Otago Daily Times in November 1948, the Land Rover demonstrated 'combining operational economy with the main functions of a tractor, light truck, portable power plant and a car'. Photo / Ros Woodham The Otago Daily Times also described that 'with the four-wheel drive, it has been found in tests, the Land Rover will work on slopes which would not be possible for a wheeled tractor' and showed 'complete efficiency for discing, harrowing, chain-harrowing, seeding and top-dressing'. 'The addition of either a rear or central power take-off enabled the use of mowers, threshers, circular saws, welders and compressors,' Paton said. 'The versatility of this Land Rover drew considerable interest.' Twenty was famously in the news in 1948 when, with permission, she was driven up the Parliament steps to demonstrate her superior 4WD capabilities. A heartfelt journey up through New Zealand Camping after a hot, dusty drive with Julian (left) and good friend Andrew Richards (right), who flew in from Bristol, UK to join the adventure. Photo / Craig Irwin Faced with the task of getting Twenty home to Auckland, Paton decided he would drive 1800km up through the South Island, a part of the country he had yet to explore. Paton is a professor and research scientist at the University of Auckland and director of Manaaki Manawa – the Centre for Heart Research. Paton has spent 15 years developing a natural pacemaker for heart failure and a new heart valve for children with rheumatic heart disease (RHD). 'I saw an opportunity for a charity event for research into natural valves for children with RHD.' Paton said 1400 children developed this disease each year and required regular operations as they grew, to replace their heart valves. 'In conjunction with strong interest from our paediatric/cardiothoracic surgeons and incredible tissue engineers, biomedical engineers and engineers, we have world-class facilities at the university to develop living heart valves from the child's own skin tissue, which, when implanted, will grow with the child, reducing repeated operations and rejection issues.' Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) NZ provided a new Defender 110 as a support vehicle for Twenty. Paton's friend Craig Irwin drove the Defender and organised most of the logistics of the journey. Paton concentrated on daily maintenance on Twenty, and she ran beautifully. 'We left on January 31, 2025, and JLR put on dealership events as we passed through Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Napier and Hamilton.' Twenty was infamously in the news in Wellington when MP and Act Party leader David Seymour attempted to drive her up the Parliament steps (without permission this time), which caused a bit of nationwide publicity. Paton and Irwin were rarely alone, with family and friends joining them for stretches. Land Rover enthusiasts joined them too, and there were 37 Land Rovers in convoy up the Auckland motorway. 'We used a mixture of camping and motels and were welcomed through some of the back-country stations in the South Island, which was an amazing experience.' The 2168km trip took 16 days and raised $70,000 for Manaaki Manawa's heart valve project. 'We were blown away by the conversations that Twenty was the catalyst for,' Paton said. 'People shared their Land Rover memories, and they talked about their heart disease. 'The incredible humanity we experienced as we came up through the country was very humbling.'

Orbit Analytics unveils AI suite to boost business intelligence

Orbit Analytics has launched AirQuery Augmatica, a suite of new AI-powered features designed to support enterprise business intelligence users in accessing self-service analytics. The AirQuery Augmatica suite has been integrated directly into the existing Orbit platform, aiming to remove bottlenecks faced by enterprises in obtaining timely answers to operational questions. According to Orbit Analytics, the features are intended to address common reporting challenges by enabling business users to retrieve information without the need for dashboards or support from technical data teams. AirQuery Augmatica utilises natural language processing and semantic understanding, complemented by permission-aware logic. This approach is designed to help reduce the time between a user's question and receiving a usable answer, thereby assisting decision-making processes across multiple business functions, such as finance, operations, supply chain, and customer service. "It's been a long-standing challenge for enterprise users to get timely answers and insights into their data without increasing IT burden, and now with AI-powered enhancements to Orbit's solution, AirQuery Augmatica brings business intelligence to the next level," said Rupesh Sharma, CEO and Cofounder of Orbit Analytics. "The seamless user experience driven by our AI solution removes the need for deep technical data analysis expertise while decreasing the time it takes to access the information they need, all while preserving accuracy, context, and security." The suite introduces two primary productivity tools: Quicklets and Discovery. Both tools are now available to all existing Orbit Analytics customers within their current enterprise environments. Quicklets Quicklets are embedded in users' everyday workflows and are designed to provide instant responses to frequently asked operational questions, such as order status, payment history, and fulfilment timing. The tool allows users to analyse key metrics rapidly without needing to switch between different applications or rely on other departments for report generation. Discovery Discovery enables users to ask open-ended business questions using natural language. The AI interprets business intent, applies relevant logic, and delivers concise and actionable results based on real-time global data. The tool is capable of understanding context and delivering answers aligned to the user's needs. Both Quicklets and Discovery have built-in security and role-based access controls to ensure that data privacy and security standards are maintained. The suite is also integrated with Microsoft Azure AI Services, which further supports data management capabilities. The introduction of AirQuery Augmatica is positioned as a strategic enhancement of Orbit Analytics' expertise in AI-powered business intelligence (BI) solutions. The company states that providing these AI features within their platform enables customers to improve operations across various departments and increase operational efficiency. "We're focused on helping customers make better business decisions faster and increase operational efficiency," said Sharma. "By embedding these AI tools directly into our platform, we're reducing the effort required to find and act on business insights and enhance productivity in global teams." Orbit Analytics provides a business intelligence and data analytics platform that integrates with a range of ERP systems, cloud platforms, and business applications. Its product offering, including GL Sense and Data Pipelines, is designed to enable real-time access to unified data from diverse sources for interactive reporting and visualisation purposes. The company also highlights its capabilities in accelerating report migration from Oracle ERP systems and other legacy tools, which supports organisations seeking to modernise their analytics workflows.
