China urged to keep close eye on US-led Quad as trade tensions fail to dent solidarity
They cited this week's meeting of Indo-Pacific
Quad partners as the latest example of such unified signalling.
The top diplomats of the United States, Japan, Australia and India, meeting in Washington on Tuesday, agreed to deepen cooperation on Indo-Pacific maritime security and introduce a critical minerals initiative to diversify supply chains.
'We remain seriously concerned about the situation in the
East China Sea and
South China Sea ,' read a joint statement following the talks between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his three counterparts – Takeshi Iwaya of Japan, Penny Wong of Australia and India's Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
The apparent reference was to regional tensions and disputes with China involving
territorial claims and freedom of navigation in these maritime areas.
'We are deeply concerned about the abrupt constriction and future reliability of key supply chains, specifically for critical minerals,' the statement added, again apparently referring to China leveraging its rare earths dominance, though it was not mentioned by name.

China and India are rebuilding relations, but will it be ‘a cold peace'?
From a new border agreement to resuming direct flights and deepening economic cooperation, China and India appear to be entering a new diplomatic chapter following Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's first visit to New Delhi in three years. There could be a further thaw in ties when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels to Tianjin at the end of the month – his first trip to China in seven years – for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, when he could also meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping. But analysts say challenges remain and any improvement in the relationship might be limited given the mutual distrust between the two neighbours and Beijing potentially seeing New Delhi's overtures as 'opportunism' at a time when Washington has stepped up tariff pressure. During Wang's two-day visit to New Delhi this week, the two sides agreed to start talks on their eastern and middle border sectors, in addition to talks on the western Himalayan border that have been under way since a deadly clash between Chinese and Indian troops in the Galwan Valley in 2020. Indian media also reported that Beijing had cleared rare earth exports to India, a strategic move given the pivotal role of the minerals for China in its trade war with the United States Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (left) meets Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday. China firm slammed for glorifying overtime work; 1 worker logs 160 extra hours in a month
A company in China has landed itself in hot water for praising employees who work extra hours after it emerged that the longest overtime total for one employee was 160 hours in a month. On August 6, the Yisai e-commerce Company in Shanghai issued a notice of commendation for the overtime performances of its staff. The document soon went viral on mainland social media, the China Youth Daily reported. 'After gathering the data of our workers' clock-off times at the entrance guard system, we found a group of employees who are highly responsible about their jobs and have made selfless contributions to our company. They are the role models for all of us,' the company said in the notice. The company said it collected data on how much overtime its staff did on its 'entrance guard system'. It listed the top 15 workers in terms of their overtime hours in July.
