Aviation Minister checks Sphinx International Airport ahead of GEM inauguration

CAIRO – 6 March 2025: Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh El-Hefny conducted an inspection tour of Sphinx International Airport to check its readiness for receiving international guests and world leaders ahead of the official inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) due on July 3, 2025.
The minister checked the airport services and ensured the ease of the travel and arrival procedures at the airport, according to a statement released by the ministry.
The tour included an inspection of the departure and arrival halls (international and domestic), as well as the passport and customs counters to ensure the speedy completion of procedures, the baggage belt area, banks, rest areas, and the VIP lounges, the statement added.
The minister also inspected the other services provided in cafeterias, the duty-free area, and the information center, in addition to inspecting the security room that contains the surveillance camera system.
El-Hefni stressed that EgyptAir and Air Cairo coordinate to operate direct flights to Sphinx Airport, with the allocation of a wide-body aircraft to accommodate the delegations set to attend the GEM inauguration and provide flexible flight options that contribute to facilitating visitors' access to the Grand Egyptian Museum.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 3, 2025, Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority announced, confirming that the organization will be entirely Egyptian-led, with the United Media Services Company (UMS) taking full responsibility. The new inauguration will display, for the first time, the treasures of King Tutankhamun.
He noted that UMS had previously achieved outstanding success in organizing the Royal Mummies Parade and the inauguration of the Avenue of Sphinxes in Luxor.

Ahmed Emam Egypt marked a significant milestone in its environmental journey as Sharm El-Sheikh was officially declared the first Egyptian green city to join the ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, a global network dedicated to sustainable urban development. The announcement was made by Minister of Environment0 Yasmine Fouad during a high-level ceremony attended by South Sinai Governor Khaled Mubarak, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Guemar Dieb, and Eng. Mohamed Aliewa, Director of the Green Sharm Project. Fouad described Sharm El-Sheikh's inclusion in ICLEI as the culmination of a years-long transformation, positioning the city as a national and regional leader in environmental sustainability. She traced the city's green journey back to 2018, when Egypt hosted the UN Biodiversity Conference, which brought international attention to the rich ecosystems of South Sinai and highlighted the country's commitment to integrating local communities in the management of natural reserves. Momentum grew further when Sharm El-Sheikh hosted the COP27 UN Climate Conference in 2022. Under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directive, the city underwent sweeping upgrades, implementing nearly 40 environmental projects to prepare for the summit and to serve as a model for sustainable tourism. The minister emphasized that the success of sustainability initiatives hinges on public participation, noting that 'the human being is the foundation of sustainability.' She called on citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits such as recycling, resource conservation, and the use of renewable energy, stressing that environmental change begins with individual choices. The city's green credentials include major investments in solar power, sustainable transport, and waste management. Among the standout achievements are the installation of solar panels generating 51 megawatts of electricity, the construction of 145 kilometers of bicycle lanes, and the implementation of shared bike systems and electric buses. Community engagement has also played a vital role, particularly in solid waste management and biodiversity protection. Governor Khaled Mubarak hailed the ICLEI membership as a national accomplishment and a direct result of Egypt's strategic vision for sustainable development. He underscored that the green transformation of Sharm El-Sheikh aligns with South Sinai's sustainable development strategy, endorsed by President El-Sisi in 2024, which aims to position the city as a global hub for green tourism. 'Sharm El-Sheikh is no longer just a tourist destination; it is becoming a blueprint for how cities in the region can thrive economically, socially, and environmentally,' Mubarak said. He pointed to the 'Green Sharm' initiative as a turning point, driven by five integrated pillars: clean energy, waste reduction, sustainable transport, water conservation, and biodiversity. He also highlighted future plans, including a ban on single-use plastics in 50 hotels, increased support for local initiatives, and expanded partnerships with the private sector and international donors. So far, the city has attracted more than \$19.7 million in green financing, with further investments expected. In turn, Eng. Mohamed Aliewa, head of the Green Sharm project, described the city's ICLEI membership as a pivotal step toward its transformation into a sustainable city. He noted that Sharm El-Sheikh is now the fourth Arab city to join the international network. Aliewa also unveiled an online portal listing all certified green hotels, dive centers, and eco-friendly facilities — a tool designed to guide tourists seeking sustainable travel options. UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Guemar Dieb praised the city's achievement and Egypt's broader commitment to sustainability. He described Sharm El-Sheikh's transformation as a model for international green development, noting that the city's hosting of COP27 brought global attention to its environmental efforts and solidified its status as a beacon of climate leadership. Dieb applauded Fouad's role as Egypt's ministerial envoy to COP and her efforts in coordinating across government agencies to raise environmental standards in the city. Egypt's tourism sees 25% surge in early 2025, defying regional challenges
Despite facing persistent geopolitical challenges in the region, Egypt's tourism sector has experienced a notable increase in visitor arrivals, as reported by the Egyptian Cabinet. According to data from the Egyptian government's Media Center, tourist arrivals to the country saw a 25 percent increase during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. The center reported that Egypt welcomed 15.8 million tourists in 2024, marking an increase of over 21 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels. These figures are considered record-breaking, falling within an ambitious strategy to boost the tourism sector. It clarified that these record numbers were achieved despite geopolitical challenges in the region, indicating that Egypt continues to solidify its position as a leading tourist destination. This is attributed to tourism's vital role as a source of foreign currency and a fundamental economic driver that supports the national economy and empowers local communities. The center also noted that these steps are part of a comprehensive strategy based on providing an inclusive tourism experience, developing human capital, and maximizing returns for citizens under the slogan 'Egypt… Unrivaled Diversity.' The Egyptian government's strategy for advancing the tourism sector aims to achieve economic security in tourism by maximizing direct returns for citizens, focusing on human resources, and enhancing the skills of employees within the ministry and the tourism sector as a whole. The government also seeks to strengthen the role of local communities as essential partners in the tourism development system.

Egypt's Tourism Minister Inspects Pilgrims' Camps in Saudi Arabia
Israa Farhan, Ali Abu Dashish In a proactive move to support Egyptian pilgrims, Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, conducted a field visit today to the camps of Egyptian tourism pilgrims in Arafat, Saudi Arabia. The purpose of the visit was to ensure that all pilgrims are receiving the full range of services and enjoying the highest levels of comfort during their Hajj journey. During the visit, Minister Fathy inspected facilities and met with pilgrims to personally verify that services aligned with expectations set by the ministry and travel agencies. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of care, particularly in light of extreme temperatures across the holy sites this year. Following the on-site inspection, the minister held a remote video meeting via Google Meet with members of the official tourism Hajj delegation. This digital monitoring approach is part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to integrate modern technology into the management of the Hajj season. It allows for real-time, live supervision by all committee members, ensuring swift response to issues and continuous service delivery. The remote system facilitates direct oversight of the daily operations conducted by the 13 field committees formed as part of the official tourism mission. These teams are deployed across camps housing more than 40,672 Egyptian pilgrims to check on their well-being and ensure full compliance by tourism companies with agreed Hajj programs. Minister Fathy praised the efforts of the mission teams, particularly their dedication to staying active throughout the day in challenging weather conditions. He urged all teams to continue intensive on-site presence and remain alert to any emergencies or complaints. The goal, he stressed, is to offer a safe, seamless, and exemplary Hajj experience that reflects the strength and reliability of Egypt's tourism Hajj system.
