Lack of NCAA Tournament upsets leaves sportsbooks sweating

Reuters24-03-2025

March 24 - With the power conferences dominating the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, sportsbooks stand to take a hit if the trend of most favorites winning continues.
The SEC set a record with seven teams reaching the Sweet 16, while the Big Ten and Big 12 each have four and Duke representing the lone ACC team still alive. The Blue Devils lead the four No. 1 seeds who each made it through the first two rounds.
Arkansas, the 10th seed in the West, qualifies as this year's "Cinderella" story as the only seed higher than No. 6 to win its first two games in the 2025 tournament.
Oddsmakers are expecting the trend of elite teams marching on to continue.
Duke is now the +210 favorite to win the title at DraftKings, where it is followed by fellow No. 1 seeds Florida at+350 and Houston and Auburn each at +500. No other team has shorter title odds than Tennessee at +1700.
The Blue Devils lead all teams with 20 percent of all bets and 21 percent of all money wagered on the champion. Florida has drawn 13 percent of the money, Auburn 6 percent and Houston 6 percent. St. John's, which lost to Arkansas, is tied for fifth at just 5 percent.
The story is similar at BetMGM, where the same top four teams are Duke (+225), Florida (+350), Houston (+500) and Auburn (+525).
The Blue Devils are the book's biggest liability, with 13.2 percent of all tickets and 38.3 percent of all money bet on the champion backing Duke since it opened at +1100. BetMGM took a $500,000 wager on Duke at +350 to win the title, a $100,000 wager on Florida at +900 and a $50,000 wager on Houston at +600.
But the book's second biggest liability is Michigan State, the No. 2 seed in the South that will face No. 6 Ole Miss in the Sweet 16. The Spartans have drawn 7.7 percent of all bets and are currently +2000 to win it all.
Florida was the only No. 1 seed to feel any real pressure through the first two rounds, when the Gators beat the two-time defending champion UConn Huskies by two points in the Round of 32.
"Without many upsets, bettors found success on moneyline parlays with favorites to start the NCAA Tournament," BetMGM Senior Trader Michael Ranftle said. "UConn covering was the best result of the early rounds for the sportsbook.
"BetMGM is cheering for at least one upset in each round moving forward to break up parlays."

Al Ahly vs Inter Miami predictions, odds, and betting tips

THE 2025 FIFA Club World Cup kicks off with a blockbuster Group A tie between Al Ahly and Inter Miami in the early hours of Sunday morning, UK time. The Hard Rock Stadium in Florida plays host, and we can expect fireworks when the Egyptian giants face off against a Miami side led by Lionel Messi. 🔥 Best Al Ahly vs Inter Miami betting tips Al Ahly vs Inter Miami odds Find the latest football betting odds for Al Ahly vs Inter Miami here. Our odds are provided by our recommended football betting sites and are subject to change. Al Ahly vs Inter Miami predictions The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup promises to be a clash of continents, cultures and footballing styles, and the opening match of the tournament perfectly illustrates this with Al Ahly of Egypt clashing with Inter Miami of the MLS. Al Ahly recently secured a third consecutive - and record 45th in total - Egyptian Premier League title, underlining their dominance domestically. But it was far from a perfect season, with the Red Eagles knocked out of the CAF Champions League at the semi-final stage on away goals to Mamelodi Sundowns. The defeat cost Marcel Koller his job, with the Swiss first replaced by Emad El Nahhas on an interim basis, and latterly José Riveiro. Riveiro was only appointed at the end of May, so it remains to be seen how much influence the Spaniard will have on the team ahead of facing Miami. Inter Miami are also a team in search of the right formula. Domestically, they secured the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield with a record 74 points. But despite being the strongest looking team in the MLS throughout last season, they couldn't back that up in the MLS Cup - exiting the competition to Atlanta United in the opening round. Gerardo Martino departed the club shortly after for personal reasons. The Argentine was replaced as manager by his compatriot, Javier Mascherano. But it's fair to say things haven't gone totally to plan for the former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder. Inter have picked up 29 points from 16 matches in this season's MLS. They have won eight, drawn five and lost three. With a forward line boasting Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, it's no surprise to see they are one of the highest scorers in the league with 36 goals. The problem has been conceding goals, Inter's defence has been breached 27 times. They have one of the worst defensive records in the Eastern Conference. On a positive note, Inter have found some better form in recent weeks and come into this match on the back of two wins. Al Ahly vs Inter Miami betting tips Al Ahly haven't played competitively since May 28th - if nothing else, they should be fresher of the two teams. On the flip side, Inter Miami are into the thick of their MLS season and should be battle hardened as they switch their attention to the FIFA Club World Cup. Our Al Ahly vs Inter Miami betting tips follow: Both teams to score With this being the opening match of a new competition, there are a lot of unknowns coming into this clash. But some things we do know are that Inter Miami scores lots of goals, and also concedes plenty as well. We've already mentioned Inter's poor defensive record. If any more proof is needed, the statistics show they have conceded in their previous ten matches in all competitions. Goals at both ends of the pitch are very likely. Luis Suárez to score or assist Luis Suárez isn't quite as prolific as his South American teammate Lionel Messi, but the Uruguayan comes into the Club World Cup in good recent form. After two matches without a goal contribution, Suárez has found his form again with three goals and one assist in his previous two matches. Suárez was on target twice, and assisted once, in Inter's 4-2 win over Montreal. He also found the back of the net in his team's 5-1 win over Columbus in their most recent outing. This bet is odds-on with a lot of bookies, but not BetMGM. Lionel Messi to score anytime It's hard to make predictions for an Inter Miami match without mentioning Lionel Messi. Yes, it's an obvious tip, but look at the stats and his recent form. Messi has scored five goals in his last three MLS matches. He takes any set pieces around the box, and he will be extra keen to make his mark in his current adopted home city. NWSL roundup: Surging Wave build withstand Dash's rally

June 14 - Kenza Dali, Adriana Leon and Maria Sanchez scored goals as the San Diego Wave held on for a 3-2 victory over the host Houston Dash on Friday night. The Wave (7-3-2, 23 points) led 3-0 early in the second half before the Dash got back into the game on tallies from Barbara Olivieri and Yazmeen Ryan. San Diego is 6-1-1 over its last eight matches. Olivieri ignited the comeback bid by Houston (3-7-2, 11 points) with a long goal in the 61st minute. The right-footed blast from well outside the box hit the left goalpost and the ball caromed into the net. Seven minutes later, the Dash struck again as Ryan sent a left-footer into the upper left portion of the net. Dali got San Diego started in the 17th minute as she sent a right-footed shot into the left corner. In the 36th minute, a Houston misplay gave Hanna Lundkvist the ball and she sent a pass over to Leon, who knocked in a right-footer. Sanchez scored on a header off a cross from Delphine Cascarino in the 51st minute. The Wave dominated play with a 12-0 edge in corner kicks. Goalie Abby Smith recorded seven saves but the Houston winless streak (0-3-1) stretched to four. San Diego's Kailen Sheridan made one stop. Gotham FC 3, Utah Royals 0 Esther Gonzalez recorded her fourth brace of the season and Gotham FC snapped a three-game losing streak with the easy win over the Royals at Sandy, Utah. Jaclin Howell also scored for Gotham (4-5-3, 15 points), who halted a four-game winless stretch (0-3-1). Ann-Katrin Berger had three saves while notching the shutout. Gonzalez scored on a glancing header in the ninth minute to give Gotham the early lead. She added a penalty kick in the 58th minute to make it 3-0. She leads the NWSL with nine goals. Howell scored after a long run in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. She booted a right-footed shot into the left corner of the net. Gotham closed out the match with just nine players after Jess Carter (76th minute) and Howell (sixth minute of second-half stoppage time) received red cards. Mandy McGlynn had one save for Utah (1-9-2, 5 points), which is 0-6-1 over its past seven matches. Orlando Pride 1, Bay FC 0 Barbra Banda scored in the 58th minute as Orlando picked up its third straight win by holding off the hosts at San Jose, Calif. Anna Moorhouse made five saves and defender Kylie Nadaner saved the shutout with a stop of her own for the Pride (8-3-1, 25 points). Bay FC (4-5-3, 15 points) had a three-game unbeaten stretch (2-0-1) halted. Banda was loose in the left side of the box and took a right-footed shot that hit a Bay FC defender en route to finding the back of the net. Banda is second in the NWSL with eight goals. Bay FC came up empty on its best three chances. Moorhouse used her hand to deflect Taylor Huff's shot over the net in the 10th minute. Then in the 57th minute, Bay FC's Caprice Dydasco hit the crossbar with a fierce long shot. Later, Moorhouse dropped a corner kick at the feet of Penelope Hocking, but the latter's point-blank shot in the 78th minute was stymied by Nadaner, who was stationed in front of the open net. Bay FC had a 20-7 edge in shots. Goalie Emmie Allen made three stops. --Field Level Media

Astros get to Chris Paddack early, run away from Twins

June 14 - Jeremy Pena recorded a four-hit game, and Jose Altuve drove in three runs in support of rookie left-hander Colton Gordon, who produced a second consecutive strong start as the Houston Astros claimed a 10-3 victory over the visiting Minnesota Twins on Friday. Gordon (2-1) notched his second career victory and first quality start by limiting the Twins to two solo home runs over six innings. He allowed six hits, issued one walk and posted five strikeouts. In his previous start on June 6, Gordon held the Cleveland Guardians to one run over five innings. That marked his first start with fewer than three earned runs allowed following his major league debut on May 14. Against the Twins, he was as effective and at times resourceful. After facing the minimum through two innings, Gordon escaped a bases-loaded jam by getting Carlos Correa to ground out to conclude the top of the third. Willi Castro smacked a solo home run with two outs in the fourth, a line drive to left field for his seventh homer on the season. With two outs in the sixth, Royce Lewis drilled his second home run to center, a powerful 425-foot blast. The Astros were comfortably ahead when Lewis struck his blow. Houston jumped on Twins right-hander Chris Paddack (2-6) with immediacy, scoring three times in the bottom of the first. Pena, who finished 4-for-5, singled and scored along with Yainer Diaz when rookie Cam Smith delivered a two-run, two-out single to center field. Fellow rookie Jacob Melton followed with an RBI single to right that scored Christian Walker and set an ominous tone for Paddack. Altuve stroked a two-run double in the second that plated Brendan Rodgers and Pena and extended the lead to 5-0. Smith and Melton struck again in the third when Smith followed a leadoff double from Jake Meyers with a single and scored when Melton added a two-run triple. Melton, who later departed with a right ankle injury, scored on a Mauricio Dubon sacrifice fly that pushed the lead to 8-0. Altuve belted his 10th homer leading off the fourth for a 9-0 advantage. Smith and Melton finished a combined 4-for-6 with five RBIs. Paddack allowed nine runs (eight earned) on a career-high-tying 12 hits over four innings. --Field Level Media
