Al Ahly vs Inter Miami predictions
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup promises to be a clash of continents, cultures and footballing styles, and the opening match of the tournament perfectly illustrates this with Al Ahly of Egypt clashing with Inter Miami of the MLS.
Al Ahly recently secured a third consecutive - and record 45th in total - Egyptian Premier League title, underlining their dominance domestically.
But it was far from a perfect season, with the Red Eagles knocked out of the CAF Champions League at the semi-final stage on away goals to Mamelodi Sundowns. The defeat cost Marcel Koller his job, with the Swiss first replaced by Emad El Nahhas on an interim basis, and latterly José Riveiro.
Riveiro was only appointed at the end of May, so it remains to be seen how much influence the Spaniard will have on the team ahead of facing Miami.
Inter Miami are also a team in search of the right formula.
Domestically, they secured the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield with a record 74 points. But despite being the strongest looking team in the MLS throughout last season, they couldn't back that up in the MLS Cup - exiting the competition to Atlanta United in the opening round.
Gerardo Martino departed the club shortly after for personal reasons. The Argentine was replaced as manager by his compatriot, Javier Mascherano. But it's fair to say things haven't gone totally to plan for the former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder.
Inter have picked up 29 points from 16 matches in this season's MLS. They have won eight, drawn five and lost three.
With a forward line boasting Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, it's no surprise to see they are one of the highest scorers in the league with 36 goals. The problem has been conceding goals, Inter's defence has been breached 27 times. They have one of the worst defensive records in the Eastern Conference.
On a positive note, Inter have found some better form in recent weeks and come into this match on the back of two wins.
Al Ahly vs Inter Miami betting tips
Al Ahly haven't played competitively since May 28th - if nothing else, they should be fresher of the two teams. On the flip side, Inter Miami are into the thick of their MLS season and should be battle hardened as they switch their attention to the FIFA Club World Cup. Our Al Ahly vs Inter Miami betting tips follow:
Both teams to score
With this being the opening match of a new competition, there are a lot of unknowns coming into this clash. But some things we do know are that Inter Miami scores lots of goals, and also concedes plenty as well.
We've already mentioned Inter's poor defensive record. If any more proof is needed, the statistics show they have conceded in their previous ten matches in all competitions.
Goals at both ends of the pitch are very likely.
Luis Suárez to score or assist
Luis Suárez isn't quite as prolific as his South American teammate Lionel Messi, but the Uruguayan comes into the Club World Cup in good recent form.
After two matches without a goal contribution, Suárez has found his form again with three goals and one assist in his previous two matches.
Suárez was on target twice, and assisted once, in Inter's 4-2 win over Montreal. He also found the back of the net in his team's 5-1 win over Columbus in their most recent outing.
This bet is odds-on with a lot of bookies, but not BetMGM.
Lionel Messi to score anytime
It's hard to make predictions for an Inter Miami match without mentioning Lionel Messi. Yes, it's an obvious tip, but look at the stats and his recent form.
Messi has scored five goals in his last three MLS matches. He takes any set pieces around the box, and he will be extra keen to make his mark in his current adopted home city.

Reports: Rockets, C Steven Adams agree to three-year extension
June 14 - The Houston Rockets agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract extension with center Steven Adams, per multiple reports. The deal is fully guaranteed. The veteran big man spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, starting 466 games. During that span, he averaged 9.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. After one season with the New Orleans Pelicans, Adams became a mainstay for the Memphis Grizzlies, helping their young core led by Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. finish second in the Western Conference in back-to-back seasons. Last season, Adams regularly came off the bench for the first time since his rookie season, but remained a solid contributor for the Rockets, averaging 3.9 points and 5.6 rebounds in only 13.7 minutes per game. Houston had a breakout season this year, landing in second place in the West with a 52-30 record. The Rockets were 5.0 points per 100 possessions better with Adams on the floor, per Cleaning the Glass. That placed him in the 79th percentile in the NBA. The contract extension locks up a long-term quality backup for all-star center Alperen Sengun. --Field Level Media

Rory McIlroy: I didn't care if I made cut at US Open
Rory McIlroy's body language here at the 125th US Open Championship has screamed that he would rather be elsewhere and, after a third-round 74 on Saturday, he admitted that he was not sure whether he even wanted to make the cut. It was a stunning revelation from the world No 2, who just two months ago was in the clouds after finally winning the Masters, becoming only the sixth player in history to complete the career grand slam. And now? It sounds as if, as far as golf is concerned, he has gone directly from the Green Jacket into a straitjacket. When praised for the fight he showed on Friday after recovering from two early double-bogeys – not to mention a thrown club and a demolished tee marker – to qualify for the weekend, McIlroy shrugged his shoulders. 'It's funny, it's much easier being on the cut line when you don't really care if you're here for the weekend or not,' he said, after moving to 10 over and falling outside the top 50. 'I was sort of thinking: 'Do I really want two more days here or not?'' When pressed on what he is looking for from Sunday's final round, he replied: 'Hopefully, a round in under four-and-a-half hours and get out of here.' 'I have felt a little flat on the golf course' McIlroy said in his pre-tournament press conference that he has struggled for motivation since joining Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan in the exclusive clean-sweep club. 'You don't really know how it's going to affect you,' he reiterated on Saturday, after a round featuring six bogeys and two birdies. 'You don't know how you're going to react to such a… I wouldn't say a life-altering occasion, but at least something that I've dreamed about for a long time. Yeah, I have felt a little flat on the golf course afterwards.' McIlroy is nothing if not honest and his candour is a factor in why he is so popular with the press and, yes, the fans. This was the first time he had agreed to speak to the media after a major round since his Augusta glory. He refused to talk after all four rounds of the US PGA – where he also scraped inside the cut on his way to a tie for 47th – and then after the first two rounds here. McIlroy clearly has an issue with the scribblers and commentators, but would not reveal what it is. He acknowledged that the faux furore over his non-confirming driver at the US PGA – when his was the only name that was leaked after the clubs of at least nine fellow players had also failed routine testing – was 'part of it'. But he denied that his vows of silence have also been down to angst with his form. 'It's more a frustration with you guys,' he said. ' I don't know. I've been totally available for the last few years, and I'm not saying… maybe not you guys, but maybe more just the whole thing.' Of course, after the advent of LIV Golf in 2022, McIlroy carried the can for the opposition, becoming the voice of disapproval for the PGA Tour. Does he believe that stint as the de facto shop steward earned him the right now to be tight-lipped? 'I feel like I've earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah,' he said. McIlroy has previously noted that, unlike tennis, the pros are not mandated to carry out press duties after each match, or in this case, round. He insisted, however, that he wants this policy to remain. 'I'm not daring them [the golf authorities] to do anything,' McIlroy said. 'I hope they don't change it because it would, you know, this is a nice luxury to have.' Brandel Chamblee, the Golf Channel analyst, is just one expert who thinks McIlroy could be playing a dangerous game if this becomes the norm. 'In my view, Rory has been the best with the media over the last 15 years, which makes his refusal to talk after his rounds at the last two majors so puzzling,' Chamblee said. 'I think he is lithe enough to understand this is a bad long-term strategy. Fans are fickle. They are incredibly generous to those who give back to them and vicious to those who turn their backs on them. 'Given that Rory is one of the game's biggest leaders, him not talking has tricky normative implications, in my opinion. Why have past greats – Tiger [Woods] almost always talked, even after poor rounds – been so generous with the media? 'Perhaps it's out of a sense of duty, following a custom passed down to them by the players that came before them who understood that the debt you pay to those who elevated the game before you is by elevating the game for those who come after you.' That much might all be true, but McIlroy's biggest concern before The Open in his homeland at Royal Portrush is rediscovering his game. He is due to play in next week's Travelers Championship in Connecticut and will then tee it up at the Scottish Open, the week before his quest for a second Claret Jug. The good news is that he feels that his reversion to the TaylorMade Qi 10 driver for this event was the right step. 'I've driven the ball as good as I have in a long time, so that's at least a positive this week,' McIlroy said. For his many admirers, however, it must surely be worrying that the narrative surrounding this most natural of characters and talents has turned negative in such a bizarrely short amount of time. Paul McGinley, the former Ryder Cup captain who is a friend of his countryman, concurs. 'We thought that winning a major, winning the Masters, was going to unlock him,' McGinley said on Sky Sports. 'But it looks like it's burdened him more than anything else. His frustration is quite clear, and his game is nowhere near where it needs to be.'

Caitlin Clark dazzles on sensational WNBA return as Indiana Fever take down champion New York Liberty
As Caitlin Clark prepared to return from a five- game injury absence on Saturday, she was - it turns out - needlessly cautious. She spoke beforehand about giving herself 'grace' as she returned from her quad problem. After all, it was the first time she'd been sidelined since high school, and she hadn't played in three weeks. 'You know, maybe shake off some rust and figure some things out, and just get back into the flow of it,' she told reporters. That plan proved to be completely, almost laughably hypothetical as Clark got right back to her very best in front of a packed Gainbridge Fieldhouse, scoring 32 points in a 102-88 win to knock off the defending champions. If there was any sign at all of the time she'd spent away, perhaps it was the sight of her huffing and puffing after the conclusion of the first quarter. Crucially, though, that fatigue came after she buried three-pointers on three consecutive possessions, sticking out her tongue in celebration as she dragged her team back in the game. Now that was the Clark we remembered. The reigning Rookie of the Year may still be getting her legs and lungs under her, but fans were treated to the full Clark experience on Saturday. Her playmaking, as she threaded the needle to Kelsey Mitchell for her first assist of the game. Her brashness, as she earned herself a technical foul for jawing at the refs in the second quarter. And especially her absurd shooting range, as she ended the afternoon with seven triples. As she came down from her quick nine-point burst in the first half, she pulled up not far in front of midcourt. The shot missed, but it was hard not to feel it was a justified heat check with how she was playing. It took a little bit for Clark to get going, but this crowd - many of whom descended upon the area around the arena a couple of hours before - were happy to be patient. The Liberty raced out to 17-6 lead as Sabrina Ionescu was the most impressive guard on the court in the early stages. Yet it wasn't too long before Clark, who only scored her second field goal with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter, got going. Things rapidly shifted in the next few minutes. Clark ended the period with 14 points, the Fever found themselves down just two and the Fever fans were on their feet. The offense kept humming from there, as Lexie Hull and Kelsey Mitchell had productive first halves too, while Clark ended the half with a fairly astonishing 25. And she wasn't done just yet. Ionescu awoke again to begin the third quarter, scoring a quick five points. A pair of free throws from Nastaha Cloud (after a bucket a couple of minutes before) then flipped the advantage to a six-point lead for the visitors to briefly quiet an enthusiastic daytime crowd. But Clark and her teammates weren't about to let the Liberty spoil her return. The former Iowa star continued getting to her spots at will, Aaliyah Boston helped with some makes inside and the Liberty - without key starter Jonquel Jones - struggled to keep up with what looked a high-octane Fever offense as the lead stretched to as much as 13 in the third quarter. Clark showed a rare bit of mortality towards the end of the third quarter when she missed a pair of free throws. Coupled with several turnovers in the fourth quarter - one sequence saw her cough up the ball on consecutive possessions - the Liberty were given the chance to stick around. They obliged (if only for a bit) as the lead shrunk to four before Boston and Mitchell made some big plays with Clark getting a breather. She checked into the game for the final time with 3:43 left and an 11-point lead, and put any chances of an already-improbable Liberty comeback to bed with a couple of nifty assists. Before the win, Clark said that it 'almost feels like the start of the season' given that she only played four games before getting hurt. There can't be any doubt after this stunning performance that she's in midseason form.
