Florida Panthers crack and dent Stanley Cup during championship celebrations

The Guardian6 hours ago

The Stanley Cup is a little banged up, thanks to the Florida Panthers' celebration of back-to-back titles.
The bowl of the famous trophy is cracked and the bottom is dented. Not for the first time and likely not the last.
The Panthers won their second consecutive championship on Tuesday night, beating Edmonton in six games. The team, following decades of tradition, partied with the Cup into the wee hours and kept the revelry going in Fort Lauderdale well into Wednesday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the Hockey Hall of Fame said the keepers of the Cup are taking the appropriate steps and plan to have it repaired by the celebration parade on Sunday. Made of silver and a nickel alloy, the 37-pound Cup is relatively malleable.
Damage is nothing new for the 131-year-old silver chalice. It has been submerged in pools and the Atlantic Ocean and mishandled by players, coaches and staff for more than a century. Just this decade alone, the Tampa Bay Lightning dropped the Cup during their boat parade in 2021 and the Colorado Avalanche dented it on the ice the night they won in 2022.

D-backs place C Gabriel Moreno (hand) on injured list

June 19 - The Arizona Diamondbacks placed catcher Gabriel Moreno on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a contusion on his right (throwing) hand. Moreno, 25, had been in and out of the lineup since getting struck in the hand by a wild pitch on June 6. The IL move is retroactive to Monday. Moreno is batting .270 with five homers and 20 RBIs through 53 games this season. He is a career .278 hitter with 18 home runs and 122 RBIs in 286 games with the Toronto Blue Jays (2022) and Diamondbacks. Jose Herrera, 28, has been starting behind the plate in Moreno's absence. In related transactions, Arizona called up journeyman catcher Aramis Garcia from Triple-A Reno and transferred right-handed reliever Christian Montes De Oca (back) to the 60-day injured list. --Field Level Media

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca yet to speak to Mykhailo Mudryk after doping charges

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed he has not yet spoken to winger Mykhailo Mudryk since the Ukrainian was charged with violating anti-doping rules. The 24-year-old is facing a lengthy ban after the Football Association announced on Friday it had charged the player. Mudryk has not played since being suspended last December after testing positive for a prohibited substance. He was last seen in public at the Europa Conference League final in Wroclaw last month having attended in a private capacity. Mudryk is not allowed to train with the squad, who are currently at the Club World Cup in the United States. Speaking ahead of the Blues' second match of the tournament against Flamengo in Philadelphia on Friday, Maresca said: 'I spoke with 'Misha' in Poland when we played the Conference League final but I didn't speak with him since that time. 'To be honest, I didn't see the news. They communicated (it to) me last night. There is nothing more that I can add at the moment because I don't have more information.' Chelsea did not officially comment after the charges were announced but have previously said they are supporting the player. Maresca said: 'The last time I spoke with Misha he was quite good. I didn't see him worried, or at least I didn't see him not good. It was OK. 'I don't know how he is now but for sure in the next days, weeks, we're going to have a talk.' Chelsea are in the market for a new winger this summer, and have been heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens, but Maresca says that is not because of the Mudryk situation. The Italian said: 'We had already one entire season, almost, without Misha. 'We've decided to go for a winger not because of Misha. It's something quite clear, it's a position that we need to improve.' Maresca dismissed speculation over the future of another winger in England international Noni Madueke, with reports Arsenal are monitoring his situation. Maresca said: 'Noni is our player. In this moment, you can read much speculation about many players, but Noni is our player. We consider Noni our player for next season.' Maresca is set to make changes to his side for the Flamengo clash at Lincoln Financial Field due to the anticipated heat. The Blues, who opened their campaign in Group D with a 2-0 win over LAFC, are set to face the Brazilians at 2pm local time, with the temperature forecast to reach 28C. Maresca said: 'It's not easy because of the temperature. This is the reason why we're going to try to rotate players. 'Unfortunately for us, as a Brazilian team, they are more used to playing in this temperature – but it doesn't matter. We're going to try to do our best to win the game.'

Shamed Rufus McLean called up by USA... and could face Scotland at Murrayfield later this year

Shamed former Scotland star Rufus McLean is set to make a controversial return to international rugby with the USA - and could potentially face Gregor Townsend 's side at Murrayfield this year. The ex-Glasgow Warriors winger looked set to become a regular fixture in the Scotland squad when he won three caps and scored twice on his debut against Tonga in 2021. Then came the shocking revelation McLean had subjected his former partner Cara Haston to a two-year campaign of domestic abuse. Handed a 120-hour community payback order by Sheriff Matthew Auchinloss and banned from contacting Haston for 10 years, the former Merchiston High pupil was sacked by Scottish Rugby for 'gross misconduct and breach of contract'. Now, having since moved to America, he is set to return to the international fold with the US after fulfilling World Rugby's regulation that states a player is eligible to switch nationalities after a three-year 'cooling off' period in which they haven't been capped. McLean's final Scotland appearance was on July 16, 2022. Now McLean could play against Scotland for the USA in the Autumn Test series He has been named in the USA Eagles' squad for their summer fixtures and could make his debut against England at Audi Field in Washington DC on July 19. McLean could also line up against Scotland at Murrayfield later this year when the countries meet in the November Test series. Boston-born McLean moved to the US last year when he was signed by the Colorado-based American Raptors before switching to the Houston SaberCats earlier this year. USA Eagles head coach Scott Lawrence said: 'Generally across the outside backs, one of the things we wanted to do was increase the team speed. 'So when you look at a guy who runs 10.4 metres per second, and who has played at a high level of rugby, you go: 'Yeah, that's a guy that helps us achieve that'. 'It's good to have him (McLean) in the mix this year. I think that's a huge one.' McLean engaged in a campaign of 'aggressive' and 'controlling' domestic abuse against his former partner. He admitted in court he had regularly sworn at her and been verbally abusive towards her, pushed her to her injury, tracked her movements via her phone's location service, requested passwords for her social media accounts and dictated what she could and couldn't wear.
