The Nimisha Priya Case: Decoding death penalty laws

The Hindu5 days ago
Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, was scheduled to be executed in Yemen today on July 16, as per reports, but the execution has now been postponed after multiple levels of talks and negotiations got underway. Nimisha Priya has been on death row in Yemen since 2018 for the murder of her former business partner, a Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mehdi . Efforts to have her released have included raising funds for 'blood money' or money that is paid to the victim's family as compensation. The case has presented complications because of the internal breakdown in Yemen, Yemeni capital Sanaa is controlled by Ansar Ullah (Houthi) while the Internationally Recognised Government of Yemen operates out of Aden.
We do a deep dive into the case of Nimisha Priya, the rights of Indian citizens who get enmeshed in criminal judicial systems in other countries, India's obligations to these citizens and the death penalty laws in India with Shreya Rastogi, Director of Death Penalty Litigation and Forensics, The Square Circle Clinic, NALSAR University of Law, Delhi

AICTE urges technical institutions to promote, research Basavanna's teachings

BENGALURU/ DELHI: In an endorsement of 12th-century social reformer Basaveshwara's relevance in today's world, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued a directive to vice-chancellors of technical universities, deemed universities, and AICTE-approved institutions to actively promote and research the philosophy, governance models, and social reform agenda of the saint and revolutionary thinker. In a communication from the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the AICTE urged the academic world to highlight Basaveshwara's teachings for modern India. At a time when India is seeking new models of inclusive development, social justice and decentralized governance, poet-saint Basaveshwara's radical ideas are being revived and researched by the country's top educational bodies. The AICTE letter calls for workshops, seminars and research projects on Basaveshwara's philosophy, exploration of his 'Lok Sansad' concept of participative local governance, studies on his fight for social equity, gender equality, and eradication of caste-based discrimination and superstitions, and 'Vachanas', which are poetic verses filled with wisdom and rebellion. They spoke out against injustice, patriarchy, blind rituals, and social inequality. Basava himself stood for meritocracy, dignity of labour, rationality, and an egalitarian society. The Indian government now wants engineering students, faculty and research scholars to draw inspiration from this reformer to craft cutting-edge research on governance and social transformation. As India deals with growing social divides and challenges in governance, it is turning to its roots for solutions, and the message is clear: Basaveshwara is not just history, but he has his place in the future.

Rupali Ganguly Hits Back After TMC Leader Nilanjan Das Tags Her A ‘Flop Actress'

Last Updated: Rupali Ganguly, Anupamaa star, defended her right to question leaders after TMC's Nilanjan Das called her a "flop soap actress" for criticizing West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. Television actor and Anupamaa star Rupali Ganguly has issued a strong response after facing criticism from Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Nilanjan Das. The latter had referred to her as a 'flop soap actress" on social media. The comment followed Rupali's remarks about West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's recent post concerning political issues in Assam. The exchange began when Mamata Banerjee shared a statement on X (formerly Twitter), addressing the BJP's actions in Assam. Rupali, who is known for being vocal on social and political matters, questioned the Chief Minister's priorities, urging her to look into the state of affairs in West Bengal instead. 'Before shedding crocodile tears for Bengalis in other states, Mamata Didi must answer who will protect Bengalis in West Bengal itself? From Sandeshkhali to Murshidabad, the only atrocities on Bengalis are happening under her watch. Bengal has never been more unsafe for its own people," she wrote. The post drew a sharp reaction from TMC leader Nilanjan Das, who replied, 'The seniormost stateswoman of India doesn't need lectures from a flop soap actress (sic)." The comment did not go unnoticed. Rupali responded firmly, defending her right to question public leaders and highlighting what she described as an undemocratic attitude. 'Isn't your so-called 'senior-most stateswoman' a public servant, or she's a dictator who can't be questioned? But if you've already accepted her tyranny instead of her duty to the people, then congratulations on embracing dictatorship. Classic TMC behaviour," she replied.
