Nebraska wide receiver Jacory Barney Jr. named to Paul Hornung Award Watchlist

Yahoo5 days ago
A rising Husker is now on an award watchlist ahead of the 2025 season. Sophomore wide receiver Jacory Barney Jr. is now on the Paul Hornung Award Watchlist, following his record-setting freshman year.
The award is in honor of football Hall of Famer Paul Hornung and is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in college football. Hornung tore up the field both in college and on the professional level, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1956 and becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 1957 NFL Draft.
He played in almost every position at Notre Dame, including quarterback, running back, punter, kicker, defensive back, and returner. Hornung continued his versatile career with the Green Bay Packers, serving as a multi-threat offensive back and a prolific kicker. He helped the Packers to four NFL championships, led the league in scoring for three years straight, set the single-season scoring record in 1960 with 176 points, and was named league MVP in 1961.
Barney played in all 13 games for Nebraska as a true freshman, starting in four of them. He tied a school record for the most receptions by a Nebraska freshman, hauling in 55 passes for 447 yards. Barney also racked up 130 rushing yards and three touchdowns off 10 carries and returned 14 kickoffs for 285 yards.
This helped Barney finish second on the team with 842 all-purpose yards. He ranked third nationally among all FBS freshmen in receptions.

Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd remaining upbeat as he continues to deal with injuries

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd says he has leaned on his faith as he deals with the multiple injuries that have kept him off the field for much of his NFL career. That faith is being tested once again. The 2024 third-round pick from Southern California played just one game and carried the ball only six times as a rookie due to a variety of injuries. Now he's dealing with a groin issue that leaves him uncertain about when he will be cleared to practice again.

Baltimore Ravens excitement returns as preseason kicks off at M&T Bank Stadium

Baltimore Ravens' excitement is pulsing through the city with fans gearing up for the first taste of football since January. Fans will flock to M&T Bank Stadium on Thursday as the Ravens will take on the Indianapolis Colts in the first preseason game of the season. Stars, such as Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry, and Roquan Smith, won't be playing, but that isn't stopping fans from displaying their purple pride. "I'm ready for football, let's go Ravens," Ravens fan Juju said. "We ready," Ravens' fan Farro Louve said. "Our whole D-line is ready, linebackers are ready, Ravens ready, man." On Thursday, Ravens fans are celebrating the start of football season in Baltimore. "We're probably going to try to go and do a little pre-gaming, tailgating, and then we're going to go to the game," Ravens fan Tiffany Thomas said. While it's just preseason, fans say this game matters, even if it's just for bragging rights. "I know my Ravens are going to win and I love him very much – he's a Colts fan — but we're going to win tonight. I'm super excited about that," Thomas said. Ravens fans feel optimistic about the season, saying a Super Bowl title is the expectation. Baltimore won the AFC North in 2024 and made it to the AFC Divisional round of the playoffs, before a heartbreaking 27-25 loss to the Buffalo Bills. "I think they're going to do awesome," Juju said. "Baltimore is tough, Baltimore is hard, they got it. And they are going to kill the Steelers. I want them to wipe the Steelers out." "I'm looking for us to go to the Super Bowl, man," said Ravens fan Toshio Williams. "We've got the players, I'm just hoping these new people they drafted are broke enough and hungry enough to produce enough to make the team, you know what I mean?" "Shout out to the Ravens, man, we're going to do our thing this year," added Louve. "(Lamar Jackson) is going to take us to the Super Bowl. Everybody, get your costumes ready because we're going to the Big Show."

Texas Tech beats SEC schools for Georgia native LaDamion Guyton, No. 2 player in '27 class

Five-star edge rusher LaDamion Guyton, a Georgia native and the No. 2 prospect in the 2027 recruiting class, announced on Thursday that he has committed to Texas Tech. It's a huge win for the Red Raiders, who have had a fruitful offseason by utilizing their vast financial resources to land top prospects in both the transfer portal and through high school recruiting. Texas Tech's 2025 football roster budget is roughly $25 million, according to general manager James Blanchard. The Red Raiders spent more than $12 million on 21 transfers in hopes of winning the Big 12 title this season. Guyton would make $900,000 in Year 1, $1.2 million in Year 2 and $1.4 million in Year 3. On3 was first to report the financial terms of the contract. High school recruits cannot receive an official revenue-sharing contract offer until Aug. 1 of their senior year, one of many terms of the House v. NCAA settlement that allows schools to directly compensate athletes. They cannot sign a revenue-sharing contract until the first day of the early signing period for their class, which would be in December 2026 for Guyton. Name, image and likeness contracts are handled differently depending on varying state laws. Advertisement Pulling Guyton out of Georgia is another example of Texas Tech's growing recruiting prowess. Guyton's other three finalists were all SEC schools: Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Beating Kirby Smart's Bulldogs for a coveted in-state prospect is a difficult task, but the Red Raiders have bucked many trends lately thanks to their spending power. Texas Tech had not signed a five-star recruit out of high school in the modern recruiting era until landing 2024 receiver Micah Hudson. The Raiders will have three in four cycles if they sign both Ojo and Guyton. They're also trending positively in the race for 2027 five-star offensive tackle Cooper Hackett out of Oklahoma. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Guyton has been productive at Benedictine Military School in Savannah, Ga. Guyton tallied a combined 134 tackles, 16.5 sacks and 33 tackles for loss in his first two high school seasons, with two more to go. Both the 247Sports Composite and the Rivals Industry rankings list him as the second-best prospect and the No. 1 edge rusher in the 2027 class.
