FSCA warns consumers against these impersonation scams

As technology increases, impersonation scams also increase as it gets easier for scammers to pretend they are someone else, the FSCA says. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) is warning consumers against various impersonation scams where scammers impersonate a well-known financial service provider or its employee and use the fake identity to solicit funds from the public on platforms such as Telegram. The FSCA warns consumers to be careful when engaging with administrators of a Telegram group operating under the name PSG Wealth (Pty) Ltd that falsely claims to be affiliated with PSG Wealth Financial Planning (Pty) Ltd (FSP number 728) and its representative, Elke Brink. After receiving reports about a Telegram group purporting to be associated with PSG Wealth to solicit funds from members of the public, the FSCA found that the administrators of the group also use the persona of Brink as part of the scheme. Members of the Telegram group are promised guaranteed returns of 100%. ALSO READ: FSCA warning: These well-known people cannot help you to invest Neither real PSG Wealth nor Brink are associated with Telegram group, FSCA says The FSCA says PSG Wealth confirmed that neither it nor Brink have any association with the Telegram group and its administrators. PSG Wealth also confirmed that it does not conduct business through the Telegram platform. 'While the FSCA does not comment on the specific business model or services offered on the Telegram group, it is important to note that the administrators of the group are not authorised under any financial sector law to provide financial services to the public, the FSCA says. The individuals behind the Telegram group failed to respond to FSCA queries. Consumers are strongly urged to exercise caution when considering any unsolicited offers, investments, or trading offers on social media platforms. There are many fraudsters operating scams, and the number is growing. South Africans lose millions of rands every year to fraudsters in illegal operations, sometimes well-disguised as legitimate operations.' ALSO READ: Warning: impersonation investment scams are increasing Also watch out for Portem Industries impersonating Portdem (Pty) Ltd, FSCA says The FSCA says it also received information that Portem Industries is impersonating Portdem (Pty) Ltd (Portdem). 'It has come to the FSCA's attention that Portem Industries used the Financial service provider number (FSP 8267) of Portdem to solicit funds from the public for investment purposes. Portdem was authorised to provide financial services in South Africa until 14 June 2022, when its license lapsed. Portdem is therefore no longer authorised to provide financial services.' The FSCA says Portdem confirmed that it is not associated with Portem Industries, while Portem Industries failed to respond to FSCA queries. In this case, the FSCA also warned consumers to be cautious when considering investment or trading offers on social media platforms. ALSO READ: FSCA warns that scammers are impersonating financial services providers FSCA warns consumers about Altron TMT impersonators The FSCA also warned consumers against persons impersonating Altron TMT (Pty) Ltd and urges them to be cautious when conducting financial services business with someone on Telegram purporting to be associated with financial service provider Altron TMT (Pty) Ltd (FSP Number 50256) and its representative, Werner Gerhard Kapp. 'We were made aware that the individuals behind this Telegram group are using the names of Altron TMT and Kapp via this Telegram link: The impersonators promote Forex trading and solicit funds from members in the group by promising high and unrealistic returns within a short period,' the FSCA says. The FSCA points out that consumers must view any offer of unrealistic returns with great suspicion, especially if it is coupled with an unrealistic turnaround time for you to receive the profits. Altron TMT confirmed that it and Kapp are not affiliated with the Telegram group or its administrators. It also does not use social media and specifically Telegram to market its services or solicit investments, the FSCA says. Notwithstanding the FSCA's attempts to contact the administrators of the Telegram group using the details in its possession, the administrators of the Telegram group could not be reached. The FSCA also warns the public, in this case, to be careful when investing their funds, as the number of scams is growing. President Ramaphosa called the Presidency Budget Vote vital for coordination, oversight, and crisis response, despite fierce opposition criticism. President Cyril Ramaphosa defended the Presidency Budget Vote in parliament, calling it a vital tool for government coordination and oversight amid fierce criticism from opposition parties during the debate. He was replying to the debate on Budget 1 during a National Assembly hybrid plenary sitting on Thursday afternoon. Ramaphosa delivered his reply on Thursday following a daylong debate on Wednesday, which came after he tabled the Presidency Budget Vote to the National Assembly. Ramaphosa defends the Presidency Budget He described the budget as exceptional, highlighting its focus on coordination, strategic direction, and oversight across all government departments. The Presidency ensures alignment with national priorities and implements urgent intervention during crises, such as load shedding and Covid-19 challenges. 'A vote in support of this budget is about strengthening the nerve centre of government itself,' Ramaphosa said. ALSO READ: 'Cyril must fall': Organisations march against Ramaphosa to Union Buildings on Mandela Day The president said that one body disagrees that the challenges South Africa faces are immense and that the country is not as far along the road as expected. 'As we journey to the National Dialogue where we will face the hard truths and forge a common brighter future, let us take courage from the words of this young patriot who said yesterday that this budget should be a turning point,' Ramaphosa said. During Wednesday's debate, MK party deputy president and member of parliament John Hlophe launched a scathing attack on Ramaphosa in his budget vote speech, calling him 'a president broken beyond repair' and accusing him of hypocrisy, secrecy, and a failure to tackle corruption. Hlophe called president 'broken beyond repair' Hlophe criticised the government for abandoning ordinary South Africans struggling with poverty and the rising cost of living. He accused Ramaphosa of shielding political allies instead of holding them accountable. He also lambasted parliament, saying it had become 'a poodle sitting at your feet begging for scraps of patronage'. The president responded, saying that South Africa faces many challenges, but those shouldn't overshadow the progress made over the past 31 years. Ramaphosa stated that South Africa's democracy is still relatively young. Dr Corné Mulder of the Freedom Front Plus said on Wednesday that the party is committed to finding solutions for all South Africans, including the Afrikaner and other minority groups. He insisted that the time is now to urgently address South Africa's economic strategy and policies to ensure a successful future for all. Freedom Front Plus proposals Ramaphosa said the government will engage critically with the Freedom Front Plus on its proposals. He discussed the historical context of the Carnegie Report and its influence on the development of apartheid. The president highlighted the disparities in resources devoted to white and black people. 'Honourable Mulder, the huge racial disparities we see in access to wealth and opportunities in South Africa were the consequence of the aid provided by the apartheid state to white people,' Ramaphosa said. The president emphasised the importance of creating a bright future for all South Africans, regardless of race. On the same day, uMkhonto weSizwe MP Siyabonga Gama condemned the presidency budget as not only economically indefensible but also legally and institutionally corrosive. Budget is 'economically indefensible' – MK's Gama 'What we are debating here today is not just a budget. It is a financial architecture of a parallel state. A budget that funds insulation, protects inefficiency and advances elite consolidation under the guise of reform,' he said. Gama said the party was watching the erosion of constitutional accountability. The president said Gama delivered a somewhat 'misguided' view of the collaboration between government and business. ALSO READ: Ramaphosa says punitive action against Mchunu would set dangerous precedent He acknowledged the private sector's role in job creation and the need to create an environment that enables new businesses to thrive. 'While the government's role is, in part, to create an enabling environment for job creation and new businesses to thrive, the private sector is a critical driver of job creation,' Ramaphosa said. EFF member of parliament Nontando Nolutshungu said on Wednesday that the party rejected the budget because it is 'rotten from the head', and she further criticised the process of inquiry, calling it a waste of money and time. Criticism of commissions of inquiry The president responded and said the presidency has the power to establish commissions of inquiry into matters of public concern, as demonstrated by the revitalisation of the South African Revenue Service (Sars) and the recovery of seized assets. 'I said yesterday, and I will repeat again today, as a country committed to the rule of law, to procedural fairness and to transparency, we will ensure that the allegations made around corruption in the upper echelons of the South African Police Service will be fully ventilated in the commission of inquiry process,' he said. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has announced that it will adjust Metrorail ticket prices for the first time in 10 years, with the changes set to take effect on 1 August 2025. PRASA said the decision to raise fares was taken after comprehensive stakeholder consultations held back in 2023 and has received the green light from the Department of Transport. 'Fares have remained unchanged since 2015. This is the first adjustment in a decade,' PRASA noted. Under the new pricing structure: Single tickets will increase by R2.50 will increase by Return tickets will rise by between R5.50 to R6.00, depending on the distance and zone The revenue generated from the fare hike will go toward essential operational costs, including energy bills, rail maintenance, and improved safety and security at stations and on board trains. 'Even with this fare adjustment, PRASA Rail fares remain the most affordable across all modes of public transport,' said PRASA Rail CEO Nwabisa Gqamane-Ntiyane. 'We are committed to providing affordable, safe, and efficient commuter services.' Return of weekly and monthly tickets PRASA Rail also announced the reintroduction of weekly and monthly tickets, offering significant savings for regular commuters. Off-peak discounts still apply Passengers travelling between 09:00 and 14:00 will continue to benefit from 40% to 50% discounts during off-peak hours. PRASA has long faced criticism for service disruptions, infrastructure decay, and security concerns. This fare increase is part of its long-term strategy to restore financial sustainability and improve service quality on South Africa's most critical commuter rail network. Despite the fare hike, PRASA insists that rail remains the most economical transport option for millions of working-class South Africans who rely on it daily.
