Exciting adventures await at 4-H camp Bristol Hills this summer

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WROC) — After 36 hours of beautiful weather across the region, many are looking ahead to the summer months – and for some families, that means planning for summer camp, where kids can get outside and make the most of the season.
4-H Camp Bristol Hills is all about connecting with nature, offering a wide variety of programs for campers of all ages. But no matter which path you choose, there's one thing you'll never forget — the legendary Big M.
'One of our big pieces as for 4-Hers are what we call the big M: belonging, independence, generosity and mastery. We work really hard to create a space where everybody feels they belong, where they can build, like, good, meaningful friendships,' said Jessica Middleton, one of 4-H's directors.
As 4-H celebrates its centennial year, they're pulling out all the stops. Campers can look forward to exciting expansions to the archery range and ropes course, along with a lineup of brand-new events that promise to make this milestone year unforgettable.
'We're going to be doing our very first ever five K race. It'll be an ultra race here at camp,' said Jim Hooper, another director of the camp. 'We're also going to be closing out our centennial celebration this year with a gala. Our big fundraiser for this year is going to be our pool house. We are looking to replace our entire pool, complex, if you will, the pool and the pool house. So that'll be a big capital campaign coming up, starting probably this fall.'

Even with all the exciting new features the camp offers each year, 4-H's camp directors never lose sight of what they cherish most.
'I always love getting to see how this whole place, like, reimagines itself. Every week we get a whole new batch of campers, and, we get staff that, you know, build those community connections, build a relationship, and just kind of getting the chance to walk around camp is a constant reminder of what a lucky place we work in, and to be able to see the growth and development from our staff that have been coming back year after year, from seeing our campers go from sprout campers that day campers to progression campers, and seeing them develop all the way up through CIT and leadership programs,' Hooper said.

National Donut Day: How Rochester offered free donuts to heroes

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Friday is one of the sweetest holidays of the year: National Donut Day! It was founded in 1938 by the Salvation Army in Chicago to honor the 'Donut Lassies' — volunteers who served donuts to soldiers during World War One. Donuts Delite and our local Salvation Army joined forces Friday to hand out hundreds of free donuts to some of our every day heroes. 'So, the tradition, again, goes back to the 1920s, World War I and so we have just always felt that it's an opportunity for us to give back to the community,' Salvation Army of Greater Rochester Director of Development Michael Gilbert said. 'A lot of people give to the Salvation Army to help us do our mission and so this is that one day that we can go and return the favor to those organizations that are serving throughout our city throughout our community and helping those who need it most.' Multiple major chains are also getting in on the fun, including Dunkin' and Tim Hortons, which have been giving out freebies with any drink purchase. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. After lengthy restoration project, Rochester's Pont de Rennes bridge ‘isn't holding strong'

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — After a lengthy restoration project, the Pont de Rennes pedestrian bridge isn't holding strong. After walking down the bridge, News 8 noticed damage and spoke with the community about how they feel. 'When the surface of the bridge is deteriorating, people say 'Well, was this a waste of money?' and we're still trying to get answers on that,' Rochester's Kathryn D'Amanda said. Walking along the bridge, News 8 noticed nearly 40 areas with damage just like this. Now, this project went over budget at $18.7 million. 'When you do a big project like this, you hope that the public is going to have a joyful experience,' D'Amanda said. 'It was a long time coming and you don't want people being disappointed and sometimes I think that the City doesn't take… they invest a lot… but they don't in the end invest enough to make the difference that we need to have.' D'Amanda told News 8 the damage is upsetting after the time and money the City put in. The Pont de Rennes pedestrian bridge restoration project included repairs to the bridge's structural steel and the addition of a new deck railing. The project started in July 2023 and the bridge reopened in December 2024. But D'Amanda said even before this damage, the City could've done better with beautification. 'They invested a lot and they did a lot of work under the bridge which is very important but they didn't take the final step in painting it which makes it look to the public as if the work wasn't done,' D'Amanda said. But a few Rochesterians, like Gary Silco, say it's a cosmetic issue, so it's not much of a bother. 'I don't feel that it's dangerous,' Silco said. 'I think it might be a hazard for people stepping on it perhaps but I don't think it's a danger to the bridge.' Ultimately, locals like D'Amanda and Silco told News 8 they love their city. 'I'm so excited to live in the city and I hope that the city will take the time and the money that it takes to invest properly,' D'Amanda said. According to a spokesperson for the City of Rochester, City employees are aware of the chipping of the non-structural concrete deck coating on the bridge. They are waiting for a report to figure out why this happened and they say the bridge surface will be redone, at no cost to the City, after they have determined the cause of the issue. In the meantime, the City says the contractor is set to do some patch work. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
