Contentious McClean red card crucial in Pat's victory over Sligo Rovers
Sligo Rovers 0
MASON MELIA SCORED a striker's brace inside five minutes as St Patrick's Athletic put their midweek European disappointment firmly behind them.
While the 17-year-old Tottenham Hotspur-bound striker was central to most of the game's highlights, Sligo were rightly livid at the sending off of Patrick McClean just before half-time which ruined what had been a competitive game.
All but out of Europe ahead of the second leg following their 4-1 home defeat to Turkish giants Besiktas, St Pat's got their quest for European qualification next year back on track here.
Stephen Kenny's side remain sixth in the table but there are now just five points separating them from second-placed Bohemians. Back-to-back defeats for Sligo sees them remain in trouble second bottom of the table.
The chief talking point of a pretty uninspiring first half arrived on 42 minutes when Sligo were astonished in being reduced to 10 men.
Centre-back McClean, who was having a very solid game, certainly tripped Melia as the teenager tried to skip by him.

But despite there being obvious cover there from Sebastian Quirk, referee Damien MacGraith incensed Sligo by brandishing a straight red card to McClean for a last-man challenge in what looked an horrendous decision.

Sam Sargeant rescued Sligo from Jake Mulraney's resultant free kick with a stunning save to tip the effort onto the crossbar.
But a mistake by the goalkeeper would gift St Pat's the lead four minutes after the restart.
Sargeant misjudged Chris Forrester's ball over the top allowing Mulraney to nip in to walk the ball to the net as the keeper collided with his captain Will Fitzgerald. Sligo were then at sixes-and-sevens as they somehow survived conceding a second goal on the double on 55.
First Sargeant saved well from Melia who had nicked the ball a little too easily off Sean Stewart.
Simon Power looked set to score from the rebound but for a terrific goal-line clearance by Ollie Denham.
But there was no such reprieve a minute later when St Pat's did extend their lead with another soft goal.
Brandon Kavanagh's floated corner was met by the totally unmarked Melia who found the bottom corner with a downward header.
Melia then showed his brilliance with a real poacher's goal on the hour.
Sligo lost the ball cheaply with Kavanagh threading it through for Melia.
Accelerating past Denham, Melia nonchalantly rolled the ball with his studd by Sargeant before casually side-footing to the net for his ninth league goal of the season.
St Patrick's Athletic: Anang; Sjoberg, Redmond, Turner, McClelland; Lennon (Baggley, h-t), Forrester (Robinson, 79); Mulraney (Leavy, 79), Kavanagh, Power (Garrick, 71); Melia (Carty, 71).
Sligo Rovers: Sargeant; Quirk, Denham, McClean, Stewart; Harkin (Wolfe, 65), McManus; Fitzgerald, Elding (Manning, 80), O'Kane; Waweru (Kavanagh, h-t).

David O'Leary details how he learned of Leeds United sacking
Once upon a time, David O'Leary was one of the hottest young managers in British football. The Republic of Ireland manager stepped into the breach at Elland Road following George Graham's departure for Tottenham Hotspur. O'Leary was just 40 years of age when he made the step from assistant to manager at Leeds United in 1998 having served under Graham for three seasons. It was expected to just be a temporary stay with Martin O'Neill highly sought after. Instead, O'Leary remained at the club until 2002, and during his four-year stint as Leeds boss, he led the club to the highest heights they had seen in years. He finished inside the top-five in his three full seasons in charge of Leeds, with his crowning achievement coming in 2001 when his exciting young team featuring the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Alan Smith reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. (Image: PA) The hero of Italia 90 had been expecting to take charge of Leeds for a fourth season when in the Summer of 2002, he was handed his P45. Recalling the incident in an interview with The Telegraph this week, O'Leary explains how he was at the training ground doing some work before going on holiday when his phone rang and he was called into the chairman's office. 'I honestly thought we were going to be talking about summer transfers," says O'Leary. "I go in and Peter [Ridsdale, then Leeds chairman] says: 'That's it, it's over. You've taken us so far, but we need someone to take us to the next stage.' Which was Terry Venables. 'So I see his telephone on his desk and I ask if I can make a call. He says: 'You want to ring your wife?' Well, if I'm honest I've never consulted Joy once on any football decision. She's just not interested. No, I'm ringing my solicitor Michael Kennedy. He answers and I say: 'I'm just in Peter Ridsdale's office. He's fired me so I'm handing the phone to you so you can discuss things.' I walked out the room and that was that.' While Leeds failed to win a trophy during O'Leary's tenure despite spending massive amounts on transfers, the Arsenal legend had secured European football in each of his seasons at Elland Road. Terry Venables replaced O'Leary right at the time when the club's financial issues were coming to a head. Within weeks of his arrival, Rio Ferdinand was sold to Manchester United for a world record fee for a central defender. David O'Leary at an Arsenal match in 2024. (Image: (Photo by Crystal Pix/)) Jonathan Woodgate was sold that January, and with Leeds in serious relegation trouble, Venables was sacked that Spring. The club eventually avoided relegation but went down the following year and within five years, Leeds had dropped to League One. Despite the nature of his departure, O'Leary - who was awarded £2 million in compensation after taking a wrongful dismissal case against the club - holds no ill will. 'You can't argue with a chairman when they are going to fire you. You're not going to change their mind pointing out your record. 'I had a brilliant time at Leeds. And when I go back there, I get such a great reception. "People pat me on the back and congratulate me for getting to the Champions League semi-final. Which is nice of them, but I didn't win it did I? I didn't even get to the final. At the end of the day, success is about winning trophies.'

Chelsea fans are crying out for Gianluigi Donnarumma and Marc Guehi – how likely are either transfers this summer?
Enzo Maresca has identified the area of his squad that he'd most like to strengthen DONN THE MOVE? Chelsea fans are crying out for Gianluigi Donnarumma and Marc Guehi – how likely are either transfers this summer? GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA'S dramatic Paris Saint-Germain exit has plenty in the Premier League on alert. But despite a season of chopping and changing in goal last term, Chelsea are not one of those. The Blues, who explored a cut-price deal for AC Milan's Mike Maignan earlier in the summer, have little interest in the Italian. Donnarumma shone in the Champions League last season as PSG claimed their first European crown but will leave before the end of the window. The European champions have signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille and Donnarumma was left out of their squad for the Uefa Super Cup against Tottenham. While Enzo Maresca had a headache in goal last season, the Blues feel they have turned a corner. That did not stop them exploring Maignan, though club sources insist they are happy with the options at Stamford Bridge. Advertisement Donnarumma's wages of around £200,000-a-week would not fit the current structure. Furthermore, while the Italian impressed in Europe, his stats across last season were below average in Ligue 1. Chelsea are also keen not to block the pathway for Belgian youngster Mike Penders. Penders, 20, is well thought of inside Stamford Bridge and has been sent to sister club Strasbourg on loan for the season. Advertisement Instead of pushing for a new goalkeeper, Maresca has now turned his attention to a central defender following Levi Colwill's ACL injury. Maresca said a new centre-back is now a "priority" this summer, which has led many to assume they would rival Liverpool for former Chelsea man Marc Guehi. The Blues have a 20 per cent sell-on clause for Guehi, meaning a deal between Chelsea and Palace would result in a lower fee for Maresca. However, the west Londoners are yet to explore a move for their academy graduate, who has one year left on his deal at Selhurst Park. Advertisement

'He has all the right qualities' - Romero replaces Son as Spurs captain
CRISTIAN ROMERO HAS been named as Tottenham's new captain after the departure of club legend Son Heung-min. Son, who had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for a trophy, joined LAFC earlier this month. Romero had acted as vice-captain for the previous two years and started the Europa League final win over Manchester United as skipper before Son came off the bench in the second half. Advertisement The 27-year-old Argentine will lead his side out when Tottenham take on European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup on Wednesday. 'I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain,' new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank told the official club website. 'He was very honoured and very happy about it. It's a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season. 'I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he's always pushing the team.' Romero, who joined Spurs from Atalanta four years ago, was part of the Argentina side that won the 2022 World Cup. – © AFP 2025
