'I know I need to make a decision'

BBC Newsa day ago
Tottenham boss Thomas Frank spoke to the media in Hong Kong on Thursday, after his side's 1-0 victory against Arsenal. On reaping the rewards of intense training, he said: "It feels very pleasing of course. It's clear that this was not a friendly, it felt like a competitive match. If you saw it, it was competitive and if you played in it, it was very competitive. But some of the bits we've been working hard on is the combination of the defensive organisation - so high pressure, middle and low - so there's clear principles. "As well as the desire to keep a clean sheet because that gives you a big opportunity to win football matches."On acclimatising to the role as head coach during pre-season, he said: "You think you have a good idea [about working for Spurs] but you don't really know. You come here and see how important it is to the fans and you understand more and more how big of a club Tottenham is and also the importance of the club."On deciding the captaincy, he said: "That is to be confirmed. I haven't taken a decision yet, I'd like to understand the group and the players a little bit more. I know I need to make a decision before the first official game against PSG in the Super Cup and I will do that."It was natural for [Cristian] Romero and Son [Heung-min] to be captains so I kept it how it was."

Tottenham captain Son Heung Min to leave club for ‘fresh challenge'

Tottenham captain Son Heung Min has revealed he will leave the club this summer. Son has spent the last decade at Spurs and achieved his goal of silverware in May when he helped the Premier League team to Europa League success with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United. It ended a 17-year trophy drought for the club and South Korea captain Son explained his decision to target a "fresh challenge" during a press conference in his home country ahead of Tottenham's pre-season friendly with Newcastle on Sunday. After Spurs arrived in Seoul on Friday, Son - following a remarkable 454 appearances and 173 goals for the north London club - confirmed his desire to depart this summer, with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC (LAFC) leading the race for his signature, the PA news agency understands. Son told a press conference: "Before we start, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer. "Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision. "It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career, such amazing memories. It was so hard to make this decision. He continued: "I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change - 10 years is a long time. "I came to north London as a kid, 23-years-old, such a young age. I leave the club as a grown man, a very proud man. "I want to say thanks to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept and respect that." New Tottenham head coach Frank confirmed Son would start and be captain in Sunday's friendly with Newcastle at Seoul's World Cup Stadium. It could be Son's final appearance for Spurs, despite the Uefa Super Cup fixture with Paris Saint-Germain in Udine on the horizon on 13 August. Frank said: "It's very clear that Sonny will start and lead the team out as captain. If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending." Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and after a tricky debut campaign, he quickly became a fan favourite and subsequently a modern-day Premier League great due to his consistency and personality, clinching the golden boot award in the 2022-23 season, but he is now set to exit after 10 years in north London.

Son Heung-min confirms bombshell Tottenham exit decision with emotional statement

Tottenham star Son Heung-min has confirmed that he will LEAVE the club this summer in an emotional press conference. The South Korean forward made the announcement during a press conference on Spurs' pre-season tour of his home country. He said: "Thank you for having us again here in Korea for the second year in a row. Everybody really appreciates it. It's just incredible. Yesterday at the airport we felt the welcome. Everybody loved this and can't wait to play tomorrow. "Before we start, I just want to share the information that I have decided to leave this club this summer. Respectfully, this club is helping me to make my decision. I just want to share this before we start." On what has led him to exiting the North London side, he added: "It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. I have spent 10 years at Tottenham. The main reason is I have achieved everything I can at Tottenham. I need a new environment for a fresh challenge. I'm grateful the club have respected my decision and wish Spurs well for the next season." Son will now leave the club following a successful decade with Spurs. He was signed from German side Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and has gone on to score 173 goals in over 450 appearances. The forward also led Spurs to the Europa League title last season. But he has claimed that an exit has been on his mind for some time having opened up on emotional talks with his teammates. "I spoke with only a few guys, ones I've spent a long time with," Son said. "Obviously they're disappointed, as a friendship or as a team-mate you'd be very disappointed if someone decided to leave, but in a respectful way. Obviously I'm very close with Ben [Davies] so we've spoken about the future a lot of times. "Obviously he fully respects my decision. So does everyone. What can I say? It's very, very hard to tell my team-mates because I sometimes probably spend more time with them than my family because we're travelling together, spending time together every single day at the training ground, five or six hours every day. Where do you think Son Heung-min should go? Share your thoughts in the comments below "I think we know each other so well. Everybody was disappointed but also in a way very happy for me. That was my feeling but I don't what they were actually feeling! They seemed happy but disappointed when I told them my decision." Son added: "It's been a while since I decided to leave the club. It was not easy days or weeks for me. I always try to be happy and I'm happiest when I'm playing football, but, it's not easy to leave the club where I spent 10 years light-hearted. "I tried to not give any negative impact on other players, didn't want to make any sort of noise, but it was inevitable, that people noticed my feelings. My fans even know my habits, so they could notice about it, but I'll try to have good time for the two days while I'm in here." Son, 33, has one year remaining on his contract and has been linked with a host of sides including MLS outfit LAFC. He remained quiet over where his future lied but confirmed that he would be keen to sign for a new club that would bolster his chances of appearing at next summer's World Cup. He concluded: "For now it's to focus on tomorrow's match. I would not give many comments on the next team. Obviously I would like to focus on tomorrow's match and the future and the next team will be decided afterwards. In choosing the next team, the World Cup will definitely be one of the key points that I will consider. It might be my last World Cup so I need my new environment to give all that I've got for my football career. As well as the World Cup, I will also need to find a team that will make me happy while playing football." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Saturday briefing: Isak interests Liverpool and Son set for Tottenham exit

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min announced his intention to leave the club, while Spurs are closing in on the loan signing of Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich and Everton are pursuing a deal for Southampton teenager Tyler Dibling. Newcastle have rejected a bid from Liverpool for striker Alexander Isak, according to reports. The 25-year-old Sweden striker has been training at his old club Real Sociedad this week amid reports he has asked Newcastle executives to explore a move away from the club. He has been heavily linked with Liverpool, who are now reported to have made a bid for the player which Newcastle have knocked back. Isak still has three years left on his contract with Newcastle. Neither club has commented on the matter. Heung-Min Son has announced his intention to leave the Club at a press conference alongside Thomas Frank in Seoul. — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 2, 2025 Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has revealed he will leave the club this summer. 'It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career, such amazing memories. It was so hard to make this decision.' Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha underwent a medical at Tottenham on Friday, the PA news agency understands. Spurs are eager to boost their squad for new boss Thomas Frank ahead of the club's return to the Champions League this season and set their sights on the Portugal international. Palhinha only signed for Bayern last summer from Fulham in a deal worth up to £47.4million but endured a difficult debut campaign and made only six starts in Bundesliga, which has opened the door for a return to the Premier League. Talks between Tottenham and Bayern got under way on Thursday and PA understands an agreement was reached with Palhinha given the green light to undergo a medical ahead of the proposed move. Former Luton captain Tom Lockyer has revealed he is 'four weeks away' from being allowed to play football again. Lockyer has not played since suffering a cardiac arrest during Luton's Premier League game against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in December 2023, while he collapsed on the field just seven months earlier during the Hatters' Sky Bet Championship play-off final win at Wembley against Coventry. Lockyer, speaking ahead of Luton's opening Sky Bet League One fixture against AFC Wimbledon at Kenilworth Road, told Sky Sports: 'I haven't had a break, I've been working all the way through, just trying to get this ankle right and trying to get fit. 'But I've had a really good few weeks and hopefully now I'm four weeks away from getting signed off and told I'm allowed to play football again.' Everton are looking to sign Tyler Dibling but are well below Southampton's current valuation, the PA news agency understands. The 19-year-old caught the eye during his breakthrough campaign, scoring four goals in 38 appearances in all competitions for the relegated side. A number of Premier League clubs have tracked Dibling's progress and Everton have seen an initial approach in the region of £27million rejected by the Championship club. The Toffees are reportedly ready to make another move for the England Under-21s international, but PA understands Saints want in excess of £40m for the academy graduate. After Luton edged out AFC Wimbledon on Friday night, Sky Bet League One gets in full swing with 10 fixtures while there is a full League Two programme. Rangers get their Scottish Premiership campaign under way with a trip to Motherwell and Kilmarnock welcome Livingston.
