Tottenham captain Son Heung Min to leave club for ‘fresh challenge'
Son has spent the last decade at Spurs and achieved his goal of silverware in May when he helped the Premier League team to Europa League success with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
It ended a 17-year trophy drought for the club and South Korea captain Son explained his decision to target a "fresh challenge" during a press conference in his home country ahead of Tottenham's pre-season friendly with Newcastle on Sunday.
After Spurs arrived in Seoul on Friday, Son - following a remarkable 454 appearances and 173 goals for the north London club - confirmed his desire to depart this summer, with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC (LAFC) leading the race for his signature, the PA news agency understands.
Son told a press conference: "Before we start, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer.
"Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision.
"It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career, such amazing memories. It was so hard to make this decision.
He continued: "I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change - 10 years is a long time.
"I came to north London as a kid, 23-years-old, such a young age. I leave the club as a grown man, a very proud man.
"I want to say thanks to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept and respect that."
New Tottenham head coach Frank confirmed Son would start and be captain in Sunday's friendly with Newcastle at Seoul's World Cup Stadium.
It could be Son's final appearance for Spurs, despite the Uefa Super Cup fixture with Paris Saint-Germain in Udine on the horizon on 13 August.
Frank said: "It's very clear that Sonny will start and lead the team out as captain. If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending."
Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and after a tricky debut campaign, he quickly became a fan favourite and subsequently a modern-day Premier League great due to his consistency and personality, clinching the golden boot award in the 2022-23 season, but he is now set to exit after 10 years in north London.

'I had to ask Essugo what Cole had said to me,' said Estevao. 'He laughed a bit before translating, telling me "Cole said he's excited for you and want you to come with us after the game".' 'I wanted to stay some more time with my team pals,' he added. 'I came here with them. And I should go back to Brazil with them. My heart is broken because only we know how hard we worked. 'But I leave with pride. And I am happy to have a giant club as Chelsea opening its doors to me. 'I just wanted to show my new fans in England who I am. That it is all. I hope to learn. I am sure I come to London to evolve, and to make history there too.' Palmer made a point of embracing Estevao and swapping shirts with him after the final whistle, despite the language barrier. Scotland defender Grant Hanley can become a major dressing room leader for Hibs, according to David Gray – who sees the veteran following the example set by experienced campaigners Dwight Gayle and Junior Hoilett last season. And the Hibs boss provided a fitness update on the 33-year-old free agent, following today's confirmation that he'd signed a two-year deal with the Easter Road outfit. Gayle was a significant influence on the dressing room in his single season as a Hibs player, with the vastly experienced striker leading by example AND passing on words of wisdom to team-mates as Gray transformed his team from relegation fodder to the third best side in Scotland. Premier League veteran Hoilett, back for a second season after exploring other options in the summer, has also been credited with bringing a calming influence to the crisis that engulfed Hibs early in Gray's first season of management. Again, it's testament to the type of person he is, that he wants to keep himself going, because he'll know his body better than anybody else. Gray is confident that he's got cover in both positions. 'Millsy was someone who could play right-back, right-wing-back, right of a back three, just because of his athleticism and what he gives you defensively, but also his energy going forward,' said the gaffer. 'So his attributes are obviously difficult to find, but when you look at our squad at the minute, we still have that sort of dual-position players. "We've got Warren O'Hora who is comfortable on the right of a three, central in a three, left of a three. We've got Kanayo Megwa, a younger player, who's able to play the same, Chris Cadden, Josh Mulligan, all players that can play more than one position. The Edinburgh side are flying out to Belgrade after training at HTC tomorrow, and plan only to have a walk around the venue for Thursday night's Europa Conference League clash. Admitting his thinking had been partly influenced by the delay that caused him to cut training short at the MCH Arena the night before facing Midtjylland in the Europa League a couple of weeks ago, Gray said: "Yeah, I think to do with probably a little bit of everything, the preparation for the quick turnaround in games. So we've obviously just had Dundee at the weekend. 'The Midtjylland one was slightly different because we knew that was the first competitive game and we had a long time to prepare for that game. So going over there and training the day before the game in their stadium was more to give the players the surroundings and training over there. But we need to do it with a quick turnaround. All being well, if we arrive in time, which we fully expect, all being well, we will go to the stadium, have a walk around. 'We see it more as an active walk around and just getting used to the surroundings and more of a recovery from sitting on a plane for a wee while more than anything else. But the actual football insight, the tactical stuff, will all be done.'

Stanley opened the scoring after 10 minutes when Kelsey Mooney crossed from the right and 18-year-old Anjola Popoola fired home at the far post. Mooney got the second seven minutes later when Charlie Brown's free-kick was headed back across goal by Farrend Rawson and the striker tapped the ball over the line. Oldham pressed to get back in the tie with Luke Hannant shooting over in a good position in the 33rd minute. However Stanley struck again a minute later when the ball was cleared off the line and it came out to Josh Woods who rifled home from 20 yards. Oldham pressed after the break and got one back shortly after the hour mark when former Stanley defender Reagan Ogle's long-range strike took a deflection to find the net. But Stanley held on in this season's additional round, added due to the number of Premier League teams involved in European competition.
