New research from the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center suggests that sucralose, a popular sugar substitute, may interfere with the effectiveness of certain cancer treatments.
Patients with melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer who consumed high levels of sucralose responded worse to immunotherapy and had poorer survival rates.
The study, primarily conducted on mice, found that sucralose disrupts gut bacteria, leading to a depletion of the amino acid arginine, which is essential for T-cell function and effective immunotherapy.
Researchers discovered that supplementing with arginine counteracted the negative effects of sucralose on immunotherapy treatments in mice.
Future plans include pursuing clinical trials to determine if arginine supplementation can mitigate sucralose's effects in humans and investigating the impact of other artificial sweeteners on the immune system and cancer treatments.

It's a topic that many people dread discussing with a new love interest. How many previous sexual partners have you had? Now, a study has revealed what your answer says about your prospects as a long-term partner. According to experts from Swanswea University, it's not the total number of previous partners you have had that matters. Instead, it's when those encounters took place. For example, if you have had 12 previous partners, but those encounters were a long time ago, you'd be seen as a more appealing long-term partner than someone who had 12 previous partners but whose encounters were more recent. 'Previous studies have shown that people are generally less inclined to pursue relationships with individuals who have had many past sexual partners,' said Dr. Andrew G. Thomas, lead author of the study. 'However, what's particularly interesting about this study's findings is that this effect diminishes when those encounters occurred primarily in the past and this is something we found across the globe.' If you have had 12 previous partners, but those encounters were a long time ago (see chart 3), you'd be seen as a more appealing long-term partner than someone who had 12 previous partners but whose encounters had been more recent (see chart 2) Sexual history and its impact on future relationships has been widely studied through the years. For example, a 2017 study found that women with 10 or more previous partners were the most likely to divorce. However, until now, the timing of sexual history has remained largely unexplored. 'A prospective partner's sexual history provides important information that can be used to minimise mating-related risks,' the researchers explained in their study, published in Scientific Reports. 'Such information includes the number of past sexual partners, which has an inverse relationship with positive suitor evaluation. 'However, sexual encounters with new partners vary in frequency over time, providing an additional dimension of context not previously considered.' To get to the bottom of it, the researchers enlisted 5,000 participants from 11 countries. The participants were shown simple visual timelines representing a potential partner's sexual history. Each timeline showed the number of past partners, as well as when each encounter took place. After viewing each timeline, the participants were asked to rate their willingness to pursue a committed relationship, and whether the timing of past encounters swayed their decision. The results revealed that people were generally less willing to commit to someone with a high number of sexual partners. However, they were more open if those encounters had become less frequent over time. Somewhat surprisingly, the researchers found little evidence of a sexual double standard. In fact, both male and female participants were found to evaluate sexual history in similar ways. 'The results of this study point to a lack of sexual double standards, challenging the idea that women are judged more harshly for their sexual past than men,' Dr Thomas said. Overall, the results show that the impact of sexual history is far more naunced than we thought, according to the researchers. 'The online discourse around people's sexual history can be very damning, but the results of this study reveal the picture is far more nuanced,' Dr Thomas added. 'We've been led to believe that society harshly judges those with a sexually adventurous past, but as individuals, people are in fact far more forgiving, particularly if someone's approach to sex has changed. 'The results of this study not only shed light on the universal nature of our sexual psychology but could be used to combat misogynistic discussion of sexual history online.'

In June this year, Paul Henderson received test results showing elevated PSA levels. In this weekly diary, he will be sharing what life is like in the weeks that follow: the tests, the scans, the fear and what it's like when you have to sit down with your loved ones to discuss the possibility of cancer. After the urgent letter telling me that I may have cancer, two long weeks of worrying followed. Worrying alongside many emotional conversations with my wife, Marilyn, and practical discussions on what a diagnosis might mean. It's not all doom and gloom, but we're both anxious about what the future might hold. Like many families, over the years we've felt the effects of cancer at first hand – most recently when Marilyn's mum lost her battle with the disease last year – so we know how bad things can get. But we keep reminding ourselves that we aren't there yet. We've decided to hold off telling our children until we have a better idea about what we're dealing with. In all honesty, it's a relief to put that off – for a few weeks at least. Instead, we talk about the practicalities. If it is cancer, will I be able to keep working? Where can we get help if we need it? Who are the friends and family we can count on for love and support? We try, however, not to get carried away. At this point, my cancer is suspected, not confirmed. It's comforting because when it comes to PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood tests, a higher than normal level does not automatically mean you have cancer. Although it can indicate the presence of disease, it may be that other prostate problems have caused your PSA score to rise, such as having an enlarged benign prostate or prostatitis. In the days following my own abnormal result, information like this gave me some comfort and a sense of perspective.

Researchers pinpoint key warning signs of MS that are routinely ignored... would YOU recognise them?

A new study has revealed fatigue, anxiety and pain are little known signs of multiple sclerosis (MS) that can strike 15 years before more well-known symptoms. Typical symptoms of the autoimmune condition include difficulties walking, vision problem, numbness and muscle cramps. The latest analysis looked at the health records of 12,000 people, tracking physician visits in the 25 years leading up to the onset of MS symptoms. It was the first study to examine healthcare usage this far back into a patient's clinical history. They found a steady increase in the number of visits to a GP as early as 15 years before neurological symptoms set in. This included an increase in visits to physicians for symptoms like fatigue, pain, dizziness, anxiety and depression. The visits to psychiatrists for mental health problems specifically increased 12 years before. But the researchers cautioned that not everyone who has these symptoms will go on to get the debilitating condition. They also found visits to neurologists and ophthalmologists—also known as eye doctors—for blurry vision or eye pain increased eight to nine years before. Then they saw an increase in visits to emergency and radiology departments three to five years before. And finally, they observed an increase in visits to specialist physicians like neurologists a year before. These patterns show signs 'something is happening beneath the surface' before it declares itself as MS, said Dr. Marta Ruiz-Algueró, a postdoctoral fellow at UBC, the study's first author. The earliest signs they observed 'can be easily mistaken for other conditions', warned Dr Helen Tremlett, professor of neurology at UBC's faculty. They believe their findings 'dramatically shift the timeline for when these early warning signs are thought to begin'. And they potentially open the door to opportunities for earlier detection and intervention, added Dr Tremlett. Previously other researchers had found symptoms that appear five years before, such as constipation, urinary tract infections, and sexual problems. MS is a life-changing, incurable condition affecting the brain and spinal cord that causes debilitating muscle spasms, among other symptoms. While MS does not directly kill, at advanced stages, it can cause weakness in the chest muscles, leading to difficulty breathing and swallowing—which can have life-threatening complications. Those in the late stage of the illness are also extremely vulnerable to potentially deadly infections. Some studies show that MS patients are up to 75 per cent more likely to die young than those without the disease. Most people find out they have MS in their thirties and forties, but the first signs can start years earlier. The latest study comes amid a concerning rise in cases, with around 150,000 people living with MS in the UK. This is up from around 130,000 in 2019, according to recent research by the MS Society. While experts don't know the reason cases are on the rise, possible factors are infections, a lack of vitamin D, smoking, solvents, obesity, and stress. It is important to spot the early signs of the condition, as while there is no cure for MS, treatments can slow the progression of the disease. The type of treatment you will need depends on the type of the disease patients have: relapsing remitting, secondary progressive, and primary progressive. Relapse and remitting MS involves flare-ups of symptoms where they get worse (relapse) and get better (remission). Over time it often develops into secondary progressive MS, when symptoms are there all the time, and get slowly worse. In the less common case of primary progressive MS, symptoms slowly getting worse over time without periods of them going away or getting better. Treatments may include several types of medication such as steroids, disease-modifying therapies, muscle relaxants, and those to treat pain and other symptoms. Other types of support include advice on fatigue, physiotherapy, mobility equipment, talking therapies, and cognitive rehabilitation.
