Heidenheim retained their spot in the Bundesliga for next season after a last-gasp 2-1 win at second-tier Elversberg in Monday's play-off second leg.
Léo Scienza struck the winner with a fine finish five minutes into stoppage time.

After a 2-2 draw in Thursday's first leg in Heidenheim, the return match was also full of drama at Elversberg's 9,000 capacity stadium as the Bundesliga third-bottom side edged second-division opposition for the 12th time in 13 seasons.
Only Union Berlin have won the play-off as a second-tier side in that period.
Heidenheim took an early lead through Mathias Honsak. But Robin Fellhauer levelled for the hosts on the half hour after the sort of flowing move which characterized their surprise surge up the second-tier table to third.
Elversberg thought they were ahead shortly after the break but a long video review ruled it out for a contentious offside.
The home side remained in the ascendancy, but with the away goals rule having been scrapped, the clash was headed for extra-time until
Scienza's special finish.

Bayer Leverkusen keen to sign Jonathan Clauss from Nice

Bayer Leverkusen are keen to sign France international right-back Jonathan Clauss (32) from OGC Nice, according to Foot Mercato. The former Lens and Marseille fullback was reportedly the subject of serious interest from a still-unnamed club, and the latter is actually Erik ten Hag's Werkself. Clauss, who has earned 14 caps and scored twice for Les Bleus, only joined Nice last summer after leaving Olympique de Marseille. Clauss was reunited with Franck Haise, who he played under previously at Racing Club de Lens where the Sang & Or made a second-placed finish in Ligue 1 and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. The Frenchman has entered the final months of his OGC Nice contract. Foot Mercato understands that Clauss is currently reviewing his options. Should he join Bayer Leverkusen, he'd link up with fellow France international defender Loïc Badé. Clauss would also return to Germany, where he broke through with Arminia Bielefeld. AC Milan reignite talks for Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface

AC Milan have revived their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface (h/t journalist Sacha Tavolieri). Having received the green light from the Nigerian striker, the Rossoneri are trying to reach an agreement with the Bundesliga club. Noah Okafor's imminent transfer to Leeds United further depletes the centre-forward options and leaves Milan with Santiago Gimenez as the only reliable number nine. Boniface has made a significant impact at Leverkusen since his move from Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023. He tallied 21 goals and 10 assists in his debut season to help Die Werkself clinch the Bundesliga title ahead of Bayern Munich.. Boniface struggled with injuries last season, but still bagged eight goals in 18 league games. Doubts have emerged over his place as new manager Erik ten Hag reportedly prefers Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane above the Nigerian. His €50 million valuation could be a sticking point, but Milan will look to negotiate the fee given the player's desire to join them. They are due to receive €20m from Okafor's sale, which will aid them in signing a new centre-forward. Milan are also working on a deal to sign Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund, but face tough competition from Napoli. Manager Massimiliano Allegri has strengthened the squad with the additions of Samuele Ricci, Luka Modric, Ardon Jashari, Pervis Estupinan, Koni De Winter and Zachary Athekamy this summer. The Rossoneri will kick off their Serie A campaign against Cremonese this weekend.

Bayern Munich protect future interest as starlet closes in on PSV move

Bayern Munich protect future interest as starlet closes in on PSV move originally appeared on The Sporting News Bayern Munich have now allowed their 12th player to leave the club this summer as fans believe this will trigger new signings before the transfer window closes in September. The Bavarians are extremely short on squad depth and now Germany U21 international Paul Wanner is close to completing a move to Eredivisie outfit PSV Eindhoven as per Sky Sports' Florian Plettenberg. PSV have agreed a permanent deal for Wanner worth €15 million ($17.4m) + add-ons as he is all set to undergo medical for the Dutch outfit in the next couple of days. The 19-year-old has attracted a lot of interest from clubs all around Europe including Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach, who were in with a loan interest. However, Bayern Munich snubbed his move to Monchengladbach as they reached a permanent switch agreement with PSV with a reported buy-back clause in place. Wanner is currently recovering from a minor ligament injury and that could be a small hindrance in this deal but shouldn't be a major concern for PSV. 📲Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Why Wanner decided to leave Bayern Munich this summer? Wanner was not in Vincent Kompany's direct plans despite injury to Jamal Musiala and Bayern Munich's failed push to sign Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade this summer. The 19-year-old attacking-midfielder has failed to convince the club hierarchy that he belongs to this level despite his impressive performances for Heidenheim last season. The teenager has been on loan for the last couple of seasons first at Elversberg followed by last season's loan spell at Heidenheim. Wanner featured in 29 Bundesliga matches last season and finished with three goals and two assists. he was lauded for exceptional passing range, creativity, vision and ability to use space near the final third. He was also a part of the Germany U21 team that reached the Euros U21 final in Slovakia back in June. They unfortunately lost the title clash against England. A move to PSV could help both parties as he would be featuring in a fast-paced league suited to his style of play. On the other hand, his permanent switch frees up some more funds for the Bayern bosses to make a couple of more signings filling the holes in the current roster ahead of a big 2025/26 campaign.
