Guwahati: At least 42 poachers were arrested, six major rhino poaching gangs with links to illegal trade of animal parts through Myanmar were identified and nine poaching attempts were foiled under 'Operation Falcon' by the Assam Police and forest department since the operation was launched last year.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a video on 'X' on Monday, hailing the success of the departments' efforts against poaching. He said the operation broke the back of poaching and illegal animal trade. He added that poachers were chased, using all available resources, and nabbed.
The programme was launched in 2024 against poachers following the killing of two rhinos in Kaziranga, which prompted authorities to rethink their anti-poaching strategy.
The operation uses extensive on-ground intelligence and advanced digital surveillance to track and foil poaching attempts and hunt down traffickers involved in illegal rhino-horn trade.
Under the operation, inter-state and international nexus were identified, and six major rhino poaching gangs were linked to illegal trade through Myanmar. Nine rhino poaching attempts have been foiled so far, as mentioned in the video clip.

21 deported to Bangladesh, says Assam CM

Synopsis Assam has deported 21 individuals to Bangladesh for allegedly entering Sribhumi district illegally, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This action is part of ongoing efforts to identify and deport illegal migrants, with approximately 400 people having been pushed back recently. Guwahati: Security forces in Assam have deported 21 people to Bangladesh who allegedly illegally entered the state's Sribhumi district earlier in the week, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said."Freedom at midnight? Quite literally!" Sarma posted on 'X' on Friday. He said the process of identification and pushback of illegal migrants would continue. Authorities have, of late, pushed back some 400 people who have tried to enter the state from neighbouring Bangladesh. Of these, around 58 were alone in Sribhumi senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the state, Debabrata Saikia, has written to home minister Amit Shah, urging that security along the Assam-Bangladesh border should be strengthened."I am writing to bring to your kind attention the recurring "pushback" operations being undertaken by the Assam Police along the Assam-Bangladesh border since May 2025," he said in his letter, a copy of which ET has reviewed. "The state government has on multiple occasions, acknowledged such operations and deportations of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals, which raises critical questions about the efficacy of our border management framework and the current coordination mechanisms." He wrote that as per official statements, a new strategy of pushback was announced on May 10 this year. It was followed by operations starting on May 23, in which over 50 individuals were apprehended. The subsequent operations on May 31, June 8, June 27, July 6, and August 3 led to the repatriation of over 300 said these operations, despite the deployment of the Border Security Force across the 267.5-km stretch of the Assam-Bangladesh border, suggest that infiltration continues to be a serious challenge.

The NGT formed a joint committee on Oct 24 to verify the claims. After multiple inspections, the committee submitted its report in two parts on March 31 and Aug 4, 2025. Out of the 286 industrial units pointed out in the complaint, as many as 37, comprising 34 dyeing units and three electroplating units, were found to be operating either without consent to operate (CTO) or releasing chemical waste into the drain without any treatment. Appearing before the tribunal, the committee informed that the power connection to 30 such units was disconnected by the distribution company, and similar action will be taken against the remaining seven in the presence of officials of the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The joint committee found that the illegal units have not installed any effluent treatment plants (ETPs) for the treatment of wastewater generated from the dyeing and washing processes. The untreated wastewater is being directly discharged into the Indirapuri drain through local drainage systems, which ultimately leads to the Yamuna River, causing serious environmental pollution. The tribunal comprising chairperson justice Prakash Srivastava, judicial member justice Sudhir Agrawal, and expert member Dr A Senthil ruled that it has been pointed out that the issue of Indrapuri drain, which outflows in the river Yamuna, is under consideration along with the other drains in OA No. 6/2012 and that Ghaziabad DM will ensure that a proper time-bound action plan within three months "He will ensure the preparation of such a time-bound action plan within three months from today and will submit an action taken report before the Registrar General of the Tribunal by email," the tribunal ruled while disposing of the matter. Bilaspur teen murders minor friend over mobile gaming dispute

Raipur: A frantic 15-day search for a missing teenager in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh ended in a chilling revelation that the 13-year-old boy was brutally murdered by his friend over a dispute concerning a mobile phone used for online gaming. The deceased, Chinmay Suryavanshi, a Class 8 student from Bharari village, went missing on the evening of July 31. The search concluded tragically on Friday when residents reported a foul stench near the village's old, abandoned school building, leading to the recovery of Chinmay's decomposed body inside a classroom. Investigators found Chinmay's body inside a locked classroom. Police responded swiftly with forensic experts and a dog squad. "The body was in a highly decomposed state. We have sent it for postmortem examination," said Naresh Chouhan, investigating officer of Ratanpur police station. According to Chinmay's parents, he left home around 4:30 pm but did not return. Over the past two weeks, his parents and relatives conducted an extensive search, visiting neighbours, consulting relatives, and lodging a missing person report. Desperate, they printed pamphlets featuring Chinmay's photo and offered a Rs one lakh cash reward for information leading to his safe return. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo His father, Ajay Suryavanshi, stated that they had feared foul play from the outset. "We suspected someone had lured him away. We felt completely helpless after routine follow-up with police and getting no lead," he told reporters. Police reported that the investigation took a shocking turn after detaining Chhatrapal Suryavanshi, 19, a close acquaintance from the same village. During interrogation, Chhatrapal broke down and confessed. He admitted that both he and Chinmay were heavily involved in mobile gaming, but his parents had recently confiscated his phone. When Chhatrapal asked Chinmay to lend him his device to continue playing, Chinmay refused. Enraged, Chhatrapal allegedly strangled him to death and dragged the body to the deserted school building, where he locked it to conceal the crime. "Interrogation has confirmed that the murder took place over a dispute involving a mobile phone. The victim's handset has also been recovered from the accused and he was arrested," said Bilaspur Additional SP Archana Jha. The building where Chinmay's body was found had been unused for the past 10 months. A new school structure was constructed in the village last year, and classes were moved there.
