Cheap Tickets, Cheaper Hotels, Cheapest Booze: This Island Is Ideal For Indians On A Budget
Situated off the north-west coast of Malaysia, Langkawi is not only visa-free for Indian travellers, but food, accommodation, alcohol, and even petrol are surprisingly affordable
The number of Indians travelling abroad has been rising steadily, with a noticeable increase in solo and budget travellers. While destinations like Thailand, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka remain popular, the Maldives continues to attract travellers with its stunning white sand sea shores.
Amid these well-known spots, one island has recently gone viral on social media for offering a perfect mix of affordability and beauty. Langkawi is one of the 99 archipelagos situated on the northern coast of Malaysia. Not only is it visa-free for Indian travellers, but food, accommodation, alcohol, and even petrol are surprisingly cheap. A viral video by solo traveller Roop Verma has captured attention, as she shares detailed insights on exploring this hidden gem.
Roop shared the video on her Instagram account @roopvermaa. In the caption, she mentions that you can get a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi. The total cost of travel and accommodation from India is around Rs 25,000. A hotel for two nights on this island can be booked for as little as Rs 2,000–5,000. Meals typically cost between Rs 600 to Rs 1,000, and participating in local activities might cost another Rs 1,000–2,000.
In the video, Roop shares several surprising facts about Langkawi. She says no one told her about this hidden gem. The island is visa-free and duty-free, making it a great spot for those who enjoy alcohol. Vegetarian food is also widely available, typically priced around Rs 200–300. Petrol is just Rs 40 per litre, and tourists can rent a car, fill the tank, and explore the island all day.
The island boasts beautiful beaches and waterfalls, as well as caves, jungles, and rich wildlife. Monitor lizards and other creatures can be spotted wandering freely.
Roop describes Langkawi as breathtakingly beautiful and pocket-friendly, a perfect destination for a fun and budget-friendly holiday.
Her video quickly went viral on social media, garnering over 8.8 crore views. More than 27 lakh people have liked the video, and it has been shared countless times. Over 6,000 comments have poured in.
One user commented, 'I went to Langkawi just last year. It's stunning, but the best part is it's far less crowded than Thailand and Bali. Please don't make such reels that invite crowds here too!" Another user wrote, 'I'm going there next month."
However, not everyone agreed with the video. One person said, 'Whether it's cheap or not, we'll only know after visiting." Meanwhile, another added, 'You say there's a lot of vegetarian food, but when I visited in January 2024, I couldn't find any. Please don't mislead people."

What this Noida manager said to employee's leave request has the internet saying, 'every boss must learn this'
In many Indian workplaces , getting annual leave signed off, especially if it falls neatly around national holidays or a weekend, can feel like threading a needle. So when a professional from Noida shared her recent exchange with her boss, the internet sat up and took notice. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency Kanika Raina , a digital marketing manager, had asked for a few days off around Independence Day, cleverly linking the public holiday with the weekend to make a long break. But what grabbed people's attention wasn't just her strategic timing, it was her manager's kind and trusting response. 'Leave approved. Enjoy your trip to the fullest. Don't take unnecessary stress. We will manage in your absence. Cheers.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo That single line, simple, reassuring, and human, has since sparked conversations online about empathy in leadership and the small but powerful ways managers can make their teams feel valued. 'We've got your back', but do we really? In a thoughtful LinkedIn post, Raina reflected on what the message meant to her. Live Events 'We often hear 'We've got your back' in offices, but very few teams actually live by it,' she wrote. It wasn't a grand gesture, she added, but the kind that leaves a lasting impression on an employee's loyalty and morale. Reactions: from applause to playful sarcasm Since her post went live on 11 August, it has collected over 5,000 likes and a mix of reactions from fellow professionals. Some praised the supportive culture: 'It's inspiring to see such a leadership approach,' one user wrote. Others responded with humour, sharing their own tales of leave approval woes: 'These are fiction, please wake up as your leave is rejected,' joked one commenter. 'Not to brag, but my manager would give me one day's leave if I broke my leg, but only after a written mail with proof,' teased another. Why it struck a chord In a world of overflowing inboxes and unrelenting deadlines, this exchange reminds us that good leadership is not just about managing tasks, it's about managing trust. Kanika's leave wasn't simply approved; she was told to truly enjoy it. Her boss's message carried the unspoken assurance: 'We've got it covered, now you go live your life.' It's proof that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness at work are the ones that echo the loudest.

India should position weddings, MICE as niche tourism segment: Government official
India should focus on promoting weddings and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) as a niche tourism segment rather than grouping it under general tourism development, a senior Union Tourism Ministry official said here on Friday. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency Delivering the keynote address at what was claimed to be the country's first Wedding and MICE conclave, Additional Secretary and Director General of Tourism Suman Billa said Kerala had strong potential to emerge as a leading venue in this category, according to a government release. He suggested that the wedding and MICE segment should ideally have separate microsites on the country's leading tourism portals to bring its immense scope into sharper focus, the release said. The three-day conclave, which began here on Thursday evening, is being organised by the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) Society in association with the state tourism department. Billa said Kerala stood to benefit greatly from the sector's growth due to its inherent advantages. Live Events "The state has excellent ambience and infrastructure, and the need of the hour is convergence by linking the dots to usher in a synergy," he was quoted as saying. He claimed Kerala had a potential business opportunity worth Rs 1 lakh crore in wedding and MICE tourism. Billa also praised the state government's decision to go beyond conventional tourism strategies and diversify into wedding and MICE. Kerala's green-friendly policies and its widely acclaimed Responsible Tourism model have helped the state renew its reputation as a global destination, he said. He further said the recent US imposition of steeper tariffs on India was unlikely to affect its status as the world's fastest-growing major economy. The summit has attracted over 675 buyers, including 65 from abroad, representing countries such as the UAE, UK, USA, Germany, Australia, and Brazil. Seventy-five exhibition stalls have been set up for sellers.
