Delivering the keynote address at what was claimed to be the country's first Wedding and MICE conclave, Additional Secretary and Director General of Tourism Suman Billa said Kerala had strong potential to emerge as a leading venue in this category, according to a government release.
He suggested that the wedding and MICE segment should ideally have separate microsites on the country's leading tourism portals to bring its immense scope into sharper focus, the release said.
The three-day conclave, which began here on Thursday evening, is being organised by the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) Society in association with the state tourism department.
Billa said Kerala stood to benefit greatly from the sector's growth due to its inherent advantages.

"The state has excellent ambience and infrastructure, and the need of the hour is convergence by linking the dots to usher in a synergy," he was quoted as saying.
He claimed Kerala had a potential business opportunity worth Rs 1 lakh crore in wedding and MICE tourism.
Billa also praised the state government's decision to go beyond conventional tourism strategies and diversify into wedding and MICE.
Kerala's green-friendly policies and its widely acclaimed Responsible Tourism model have helped the state renew its reputation as a global destination, he said.
He further said the recent US imposition of steeper tariffs on India was unlikely to affect its status as the world's fastest-growing major economy.
The summit has attracted over 675 buyers, including 65 from abroad, representing countries such as the UAE, UK, USA, Germany, Australia, and Brazil.
Seventy-five exhibition stalls have been set up for sellers.

In his address, Pawan said India's freedom was won through immense sacrifices, and that Independence Day should be celebrated not as a ritual, but with a sense of responsibility to protect the nation. Stable law and order, he stressed, was crucial for attracting investments and ensuring overall development. He said strong law and order is crucial to attract investments, while stable governance is essential for development and public welfare. 'Law and order must be strong for investments to come and stable governance is essential for development and welfare.' Highlighting the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, he reaffirmed the government's commitment to implementing the Super Six guarantees and other welfare schemes. Under the Thalliki Vandanam programme, Rs 8,745 crore had been deposited into the accounts of 67.27 lakh mothers, while one crore gas cylinders had been distributed under the Deepam scheme in two phases. Pawan announced a sharp hike in funds for national festival celebrations in panchayats — from Rs 100 to Rs 10,000 for minor panchayats and from Rs 250 to Rs 25,000 for major panchayats — enhancing the role and dignity of sarpanches. He lauded the state's achievement of holding village assemblies simultaneously in all 13,326 panchayats, advancing the goal of 'village self-rule.' To boost forest cover from 30 per cent to 37 per cent, one crore saplings have been planted and are being tracked through QR codes.
