7 golfers who shockingly missed the cut at The 2025 Open Championship

USA Today18-07-2025
A thrilling Thursday and Friday have come to a close at Royal Portrush as the 153rd Open Championship enters a fiercely competitive weekend.
Matthew Fitzpatrick was firing on all cylinders and took a clubhouse lead of nine-under after his second round. Then Scottie Scheffler finished up right behind him by firing a 64 to take the lead at 10-under. All the while, 2023 Open Championship winner Brian Harman lurks at eight-under with Tyrell Hatton (-5), Tony Finau (-4) and Rory McIlroy (-3) still in the hunt.
Unfortunately, the cut line came into play at one-over par, forcing The Open to head into the weekend without a number of big names.
These were the most surprising to miss the cut.
All odds via BetMGM
Jason Day (+2)
Pre-tournament odds to win: 80-1
If only they gave out extra points for wearing the wildest sweaters on the course, Jason Day might very well be in contention. Instead he's heading home early after posting rounds of 73 and 71.
Joaquin Niemann (+2)
Pre-tournament odds to win: 55-1
After finishing T8 at the PGA Championship, Niemann has now missed the cut at back-to-back majors. He was a fringe contender at The Open following his opening round 70, but a 74 on Friday put him on the wrong side of the cut.
Patrick Cantlay (+3)
Pre-tournament odds to win: 60-1
It's been a major championship season to forget for Cantlay, who finished T36 at The Masters before missing the cut at the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and now The Open. Cantlay shot 73-72 over the two days and was never really in contention.
Min Woo Lee (+5)
Pre-tournament odds to win: 90-1
Min Woo Lee was not cooking much in majors this year, either. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open with a 49th-place finish at Augusta his best result. He went 74-73 over his first two days. Quite a letdown after three Top 30 finishes in majors last year.
Sahith Theegala (+7)
Pre-tournament odds to win: 225-1
The odds don't give a true reflection of Theegala's talents, but it's clear he's been off this year. A neck injury that forced him to miss a month may not be fully healed. In that sense, shooting 75-74 at one of the toughest courses in the world is worth celebrating. But hopefully his game gets back in order soon enough.
Brooks Kopeks (+7)
Pre-tournament odds to win: 55-1
Koepka's T12 finish at the U.S. Open wind up as his best achievement this year. He has now missed the cut at every other major after going 75-74 at Royal Portrush. Not what you expect from golf's big game hunter at all.
Collin Morikawa (+7)
Pre-tournament odds to win: 33-1
Easily the most shocking name on this list. Morikawa hasn't been at his best this year, but he had been trending in the right direction after his T8 at the Rocket Classic. Then came last week's Scottish Open, where Morikawa followed up an opening round 68 with a 76 to miss the cut. That snowballed at The Open this week, where he shot 75-74 and never had a chance to contend.

According to the BetMGM app — one of the nation's best sports betting apps — that honor belongs to 25-year-old Tatsuro Taira. Taira (16-1) was unbeaten until his most recent match, when he suffered a split decision loss to Brandon Royval in October. Yet he still stands No. 6 on UFC's rankings of flyweight challengers while Park has yet to crack the list. There are several other interesting battles on tonight's card, including the women's bantamweight clash between Karol Rosa (18-7) and Nora Cornolle (9-2).
