Over 21K cops deployed to tighten security in Metro Manila — NCRPO
On Tuesday, National Capital Region Police Office Police spokesperson Major Hazel Asilo said that 21,213 police personnel were deployed to populous places such as transportation terminals, malls, among others.
'Ito po yung mga areas na mas kailangan natin na magkaroon ng visibility, makita yung presence ng kapulisan, para po magkaroon sila ng mabilis na access po doon sa kanilang assistance na pwedeng ibigay kung kinakailangan po nila,' Asilo said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing.
(These are the areas where we need more visibility, to see the presence of the police, so that the public can have quick access for assistance if they need it.)
The deployed policemen were divided into various assignments, some are assigned checkpoints, others are in beat patrols, and the rest can be found in outposts.
'Kasama din sa 21,000 is yung ating mga nagma-man ng checkpoints, yung nasa border control points. Sa beat patrols, yung nagbabantay sa ating mga terminal, MRT, LRT, at yung nasa mga fixed post po o yung mga makikita natin sa outposts po, sila yung mga kaagaran na pwede niyong lapitan kung kailangan niyo ng police assistance,' said Asilo.
(Also included in the 21,000 are those who man checkpoints, those at border control points. In beat patrols, they guard our terminals, MRT, LRT; and those at fixed posts or those we see at outposts, they are the ones you can immediately approach if you need police assistance.)
The NCRPO added that there are also cops assigned for administrative duties in the headquarters.
The NCRPO earlier reported that the index crime went down by 23.13% in Metro Manila in the past six months compared to the same period last year.
'From November 23, 2024 to May 23, 2025, the NCRPO recorded a staggering 23.13% drop in the total number of Focus Crimes compared to the same period the previous year,' the NCRPO said.
'This translates to 779 fewer incidents of murder, homicide, physical injuries, rape, robbery, theft, and carnapping,' it added.
Further, the Metro Manila police said the strengthened police visibility is here to stay.
'Wala po itong duration, nagsimula ito kahapon, at tuloy-tuloy na po yung ating gagawing police visibility,' said Asilo, noting that the cops will be on the ground starting 4 a.m.

Torre: PNP 'hopes for best, prepares for worst' ahead of SONA 2025
Philippine National Police chief General Nicolas Torre III said they are 'hoping for the best and preparing for the worst' as security preparations continue ahead of the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday. Torre made the statement after his charity boxing event in Manila where he was declared as winner by default, shortly before he headed to check on critical points of deployment to ensure the security for President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr.'s fourth SONA at the Batasang Pambasa in Quezon City. "After this, actually pupunta kami ng Baseco and then after we release the relief goods that we have, pupunta na kami sa areas kung saan ang critical points ng ating deployment sa SONA," Torre said. The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said more than 20,000 police personnel have been deployed as part of security measures for the annual event. When asked if the number of deployed cops for the SONA is overkill, Torre responded it is just part of their preparations. The NCRPO said nearly 23,000 police personnel will secure this year's SONA. "We always respect the opinion of other people. Naniniguro lang tayo, we always hope for the best but we are prepared for the worst," said Torre. (We are just making sure.) Suspect linked to killing of House employee nabbed in QC—NCRPO
A suspect linked to the killing of an employee of the House of Representatives was arrested in Quezon City over illegal possession of firearms and explosives as well as falsification of identity, the National Capital Region Police Office said Wednesday. In a statement, the NCRPO said that on Tuesday, authorities arrested two suspects in an entrapment operation after receiving information from a concerned citizen. 'The male suspect, who was later found to be using falsified identification, is now being linked to a high-profile shooting incident involving the death of a top-ranking employee of the House of Representatives,' the NCRPO said. Confiscated from the male suspect were the following: a Colt MK-4 cal. 9mm pistol loaded with six live rounds an MK2 fragmentation hand grenade multiple fake IDs under the name 'Glenn Balbido Robredo' a security license driver's license Grab ID photographs showing him in security guard uniform. Meanwhile, recovered from the female suspect were the marked money used in the transaction, a white envelope, and several personal IDs. 'Authorities later confirmed that the firearm sold was the subject of the buy-bust and verified the male suspect's direct involvement in the fatal shooting, further emphasizing the severity of his criminal background,' the NCRPO said. The two were arrested after they failed to present legal documents for the seized firearm and grenade. The explosive was turned over to an explosive ordnance disposal unit for technical investigation. They are facing charges for violations of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and the Revised Penal Code. 'Through solid intelligence work and determined field action, we were able to apprehend the suspects who posed a serious threat to public safety,' NCRPO chief Police Major General Anthony Aberin said. 'The arrest will also put into motion the wheel of justice for the murder victim and his family,' said PMGen Aberin,' he added. On June 17, Mauricio 'Morrie' Pulhin, chief of the Technical Staff of the House committee on ways and means, was shot while attending the birthday celebration of his daughter. He was brought to a hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries. Persons of interest in Pulhin's killing have been identified, according to the police. Coast Guard to use ROV in Taal Lake search for missing sabungeros
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Monday that it will use a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to aid in the search of the missing sabungeros in Taal Lake. 'This day, ine-expect natin ang pagdating ng aming underwater remotely operated vehicle. So isa po ito sa makakatulong sa atin because it has the capacity po to see yung bottom hanggang 1,000 feet….It also has the capacity to pick up objects hanggang 10 kilograms,' said PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab in Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon. (We expect the arrival today of our underwater remotely operated vehicle. So it is one that can help us because it has the capacity to see the bottom up to 1,000 feet….It also has the capacity to pick up objects up to 10 kilograms.) Five sacks have been so far recovered from the search and retrieval operations at the lake since July 10. This was after whistleblower 'Alias Totoy' said that the bodies of the missing cockfight enthusiasts had been dumped there. The PCG said that among the challenges right now in search and retrieval operations are the vast width of the lake and nearly zero-visibility in water. 'We have identified location based from the intelligence information we have received from the lead agency. So diyan po nakatutok ang mga divers. So pagdating naman sa proseso, may tinatawag tayong jackstay search—ayan po yung paglalagay ng linya na ayun po ang tutulong sa mga technical divers,' said Cayabyab. (We have identified location based on the intelligence information we have received from the lead agency. So that's where the divers are focused. So when it comes to the process, we have what we call a jackstay search—that's where the line is placed that will help the technical divers.) So we used this search strategy para makapaghanap pa po tayo ng possible evidences na makakatulong sa imbestigasyon na ito,' she continued. (From day zero, the feedback we get from technical divers is the visibility underwater. So it's really blurry, visibility is zero and the bottom is muddy. So we used this search strategy so we can look for possible evidence that will help in this investigation.) The PCG also noted that without the intelligence information on the location on where the bodies could be found, the operations would take years. 'So imagine-in po natin, sa lawak ng Taal Lake, kung yan po ay sisirin ng ating technical divers, it would take years para matapos yan. Mas maganda po na naibigay sa atin yung posibleng lokasyon at yung limang sako na-retrieve natin ay nakuha po within that area,' said Cayabyab. (So let's imagine, based on the size of Taal Lake, if our technical divers were to search beneath that, it would take years to complete. It was a big help that we were given the possible location and the five bags we retrieved were obtained within that area.) When asked if there's a timeline for the search operations, the PCG official said: 'As of the moment, wala pa tayong natatanggap na timeline. Pero we will maximize since nakakakuha tayo ng mga sacks, ng mga suspicious objects, ay tuloy-tuloy po ang ginagawang diving operations.' (As of the moment, we haven't received a timeline yet. But we will maximize our time since we are getting sacks, suspicious objects, so operations will continue.) The Philippine National Police earlier in the day said that some of the remains recovered so far from the search are confirmed to be human. Authorities also looked into the 'fishpond lease' of one of the suspects in the investigation, which is considered the 'ground zero' of the operation. A total of 34 cockfighting enthusiasts have been reported missing from 2021 to 2022.
