MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers will hold a public ceremony honoring the life of longtime broadcaster Bob Uecker before their Aug. 24 game with the San Francisco Giants.
Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio had announced plans for this type of summer ceremony in January after Uecker died at the age of 90. The date wasn't revealed until Monday.

Emmy-winning broadcaster Bob Costas, a longtime friend and former colleague of Uecker's, will host the event. The ceremony will feature appearances by special guests as well as videos with rarely seen content from Uecker's life.
All ticketed fans will receive a lapel pin featuring the design of the Brewers' uniform patch honoring Uecker. Baseballs and bases featuring a Uecker celebration logo will be used during the game. A raffle will benefit three of Uecker's favorite charities: the Wounded Warrior Project, the ALS Association and the Medical College of Wisconsin Bob Uecker Chair for Cancer Research.
'As we continue to navigate the loss of Bob, we're truly grateful to the Brewers for hosting this Celebration of Life,' son and family representative Bob Uecker Jr. said in a statement. 'We look forward to coming together to honor his memory and share in the meaningful moments of the day.'
Uecker broadcast Brewers games for 54 years and continued in that role last year even after he was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. The Hall of Famer earned the nickname 'Mr. Baseball' and developed a national following because of the sense of humor he showed during chats with Johnny Carson, in appearances in Miller Lite beer commercials and in featured roles in the movie 'Major League' and on television's 'Mr. Belvedere.'

'We continue to mourn Bob's passing, but we feel his presence every day at the ballpark, and in our lives,' Brewers president of business operations Rick Schlesinger said in a statement. 'August 24 will offer all of us an opportunity to come together to celebrate Bob's life and re-live the countless, unforgettable memories he created so effortlessly.'

Karol G to headline halftime show during YouTube's first exclusive NFL broadcast
NEW YORK -- Bringing football fans, Brazil and Karol G together for a one-night experience? That's a winning formula. The Grammy award-winning musician will headline a halftime show during YouTube's first exclusive NFL broadcast next month, which will stream live from Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 5. That's the NFL week 1 matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and the reigning AFC-winning Kansas City Chiefs. 'This year has been truly rewarding, and the timing of this opportunity — to be part of such an important moment like YouTube's first-ever NFL live broadcast — is perfect,' the singer shared in an exclusive written statement. 'With my latest album 'Tropicoqueta,' I set out to represent the many facets of my Latin culture, something I'm incredibly passionate about in everything I do. I'm excited to bring that same energy and pride to this global stage and honored to continue elevating Latin culture on such a monumental platform.' It's a natural pairing. Karol G is a global superstar, American football is growing in popularity worldwide, and many of the world's most ardent music fans call Brazil home — it's one of the many reasons 'Come to Brazil' has become a stalwart meme, a three-word stand-in for the ultimate expression of fandom. 'Our goal is to highlight the excitement and Americana of the NFL, but do this thoughtfully in a way that plays to local cultures, practices and traditions,' said Tim Tubito, senior director of global game presentation and entertainment at the NFL. Booking Karol G 'not only excites our fans and pays homage to their culture in South America, but has an impact on a global scale,' he added. 'We hope all of our fans are ready for a historic celebration.' The game is free to stream for fans across the globe, exclusively through YouTube and YouTube TV. It begins at 5 p.m. Pacific / 8 p.m. Eastern / 9 p.m. BRT (local time). A pre-show kicks off an hour earlier. 'To celebrate this moment, we are thrilled that global superstar Karol G will perform during our halftime show,' said Angela Courtin, VP of sports and entertainment marketing at YouTube in a statement. 'The game and performance will be broadcast worldwide for free on YouTube, blending the fandom of sports and music together for one epic cultural moment.'

Mets Predicted to Lock Up Edwin Diaz With $55 Million Blockbuster
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets lost to the lowly Atlanta Braves on Wednesday as their grip on a top playoff spot slips away. After leading the National League East division this season, the Mets fell all the way down to the final wild card spot, where they hold just a one-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds following Wednesday's loss. Their star-studded lineup has struggled to produce offense and their rotational depth has crumbled amid the rough patch. But one star has continued to play his way into a big new contract. Closer Edwin Diaz earned his third career All-Star nod earlier this year as he returns to his top form following a harsh injury in the World Baseball Classic and then a bit of a regression last season. So far in this campaign, he has a 1.60 ERA with 23 saves and 67 strikeouts in 45 total innings. (Photo by) More Fisher/Getty After signing a record $102 million deal with the Mets three years ago, Diaz is facing an opt-out at the end of this season and his strong production makes it virtually inevitable that he will exercise it. "He's one of the few relievers worth a big-money contract," Mike Axisa wrote for CBS Sports. "Thriving in New York after early adversity with the Mets is another feather in his cap. That's not easy." Given Diaz's value on the open market, Axisa predicted he would exit his current deal and leverage his opt out into an extension with the Mets, rather than explore any offers from other teams as a free agent. "Diaz's current contract includes a $17.25 million club option for 2028," Axisa added. "An extension could guarantee that, then add another club option for 2029. That would pay him $55.5 million from 2026-28 plus whatever the buyout of that 2029 option is." All told, that would tack on another year with the Mets for Diaz while keeping him from opting out to join another team. After another strong season in Queens for the closer, that seems like a potential win-win. More MLB: Yankees Reveal New Injury for Former MVP After Twins Loss, Injured List Possible

Cubs reportedly calling up top prospect Owen Caissie, who was acquired in the Yu Darvish trade
Though the Chicago Cubs have fallen behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central, Chicago remains one of the best teams in baseball. The team sits at 68-51 entering Thursday and holds the top wild-card spot in the National League. But after running out one of the best offenses in baseball during the entire first half, the Cubs are scuffling at the plate. The team's 96 wRC+ — an advanced stat which measures offensive performance — ranks just 21st over the past 30 days. The team's entire outfield, in particular, is a big reason for that regression in August. Help is reportedly on the way. With the team struggling at the plate, the Cubs will reportedly call up top prospect Owen Caissie ahead of Thursday's game, per ESPN's Jesse Rogers. Caissie, 23, has been on prospect radars since the Cubs acquired him from the San Diego Padres in the Yu Darvish trade back in 2020. He's obliterated baseballs this season, slashing .289/.389/.566, with 22 home runs, over 404 plate appearances in Triple-A. It's unclear where Caissie will play considering the Cubs usually rely on Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ and Kyle Tucker as their starting outfield, with Seiya Suzuki serving as the team's regular designated hitter. What seems likely is that Caissie will get a start Thursday. Caissie was born in Burlington, Canada, and the Cubs are finishing up a series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Caissie may have been called up so he could make his major-league debut in front of friends and family in Canada. Burlington is a little over an hour drive from Toronto. While Caissie has shown strong power potential and posted excellent walk rates, strikeouts remain an issue for the slugger. Despite his success this season, Caissie is striking out in 28 percent of his plate appearances, a troublesome total for a minor-league player. Swing and miss issues have always been a promise for Caissie, but they haven't stopped him from appearance on top prospect lists. Baseball Prospectus has listed Caissie on its top-101 prospect list for four straight years. Both Baseball America and ranked Caissie on their own lists the past two years. Caissie is expected to take the roster spot of catcher Miguel Amaya, who returned to action from an injury Wednesday, but needed to be carted off the field due to a left ankle injury. It's unclear how the Cubs plan to utilize Caissie and the rest of the team's outfielders the rest of the way. But with the team's postseason hopes looking strong, working Caissie in sporadically and letting him acclimate to the majors now could pay dividends if the rookie can play his way onto the postseason roster in October.
