Versatile Jerar Encarnación returns to Giants after March surgery on his broken left hand
SAN FRANCISCO — Bob Melvin has been waiting for the chance to write Jerar Encarnación's name into San Francisco's lineup.
The versatile Encarnación came off the 60-day injured list Monday and was available for the opener of a four-game series with the San Diego Padres at Oracle Park, though not yet in the starting lineup. Melvin hopes that he could start Tuesday — whether that's at first base or in right field.

Cynthia Erivo said her character Elphaba has evolved into a more powerful, self-aware version in the upcoming "Wicked" sequel, describing the green-skinned witch as "a little more knowing" ahead of hosting the 78th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday night. "They are not in school anymore. They are in their power," Erivo said. "I love this part of Elphaba. I call it 'delicious,' and I do feel that strongly. She's just a little more knowing ... The wardrobe is different. The hair is different. Everything is sort of moving toward the maturer version of who she is." Erivo's return to host the Tony Awards marks what she calls "a beautiful full circle moment" for the actress who won a Tony in 2016 for her portrayal of Celie in "The Color Purple." She credited her Broadway work with launching her career and leading to opportunities including her Oscar-nominated performance as Elphaba in the first "Wicked" film. "Because of Broadway and because of the work that we did in 'The Color Purple,' I get to sit with you now where I am and have done all the things that I've done since then," Erivo said. For Sunday's ceremony, Erivo has planned multiple costume changes, but remained secretive about specifics. She said she attended numerous Broadway shows this season in preparation for her hosting duties. Beyond her hosting and film work, Erivo is preparing for an ambitious theatrical project: a one-woman adaptation of "Dracula" in London's West End where she will portray 23 different roles. Despite initial hesitation about the demanding production, she said the concept became impossible to ignore after meeting with the director. Erivo is also releasing an album on Friday titled "I Forgive You" that she co-wrote, featuring vocal arrangements performed entirely by her, including percussion and rap elements. She said the album is "a full realization of who I am as a musician, as a singer, as a vocalist and as a person who loves music in general." Long, a former Eagles defensive end, asked Barkley whether he wants to retire 'at the highest level' or if he imagines himself playing 'until the wheels fall off.' It's noteworthy that Barkley references one of his heroes, Barry Sanders, in this conversation. Sanders retired suddenly at age 30, just days before the start of training camp. Sanders later released a statement that, in part, said his 'desire to exit the game is greater than my desire to remain in it.' Advertisement Barkley said he doesn't think he'll 'ever lose that passion' for the game, but he's a uniquely reflective player who draws his satisfaction from the impact he can have on the game. Call it legacy. Call it what you will. But Barkley's recent comments underline that he knows there will be one day when he'll know he's done all he can. Barkley has already accomplished plenty. He was the NFL's rookie of the year. He's a three-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro. In one year in Philadelphia, he won his first rushing title, broke Terrell Davis' full-season rushing record and won Super Bowl LIX. He'll be thinking about how much more he needs to accomplish before he's satisfied with his legacy. It's clear he doesn't have a firm timeline, but the mere beginning of this conversation will induce anxiety throughout the Eagles fan base. It certainly will be a topic reporters will focus on throughout this upcoming season. Barkley, comfortable in the spotlight, is inviting that discussion. The Sanders reference will serve as an unofficial expectation for a timeline. Barkley will turn 30 on Feb. 9, 2027. He just signed a contract extension through the 2028 season.
