Thailand mulls zero duty for more US goods to win tariff deal

The Star17 hours ago
BANGKOK: Thailand is weighing allowing zero-duty market access for more US goods to help persuade the Trump administration to lower a threatened 36% tariff on its exports.
Thailand, which has previously cut tariffs on imports of longan and tilapia fish from other countries, could lower the levy for the US on those goods to zero, Finance Minister Pichai Chunahavajira said.
The government may also amend existing regulations to allow left-hand drive vehicles from the US and eliminate taxes on goods already included in free-trade agreements with other countries, he said.
The US is pushing for "ambitious proposals,' the minister told a trade seminar in Bangkok on Monday (July 14), without elaborating. The two sides remain engaged in ongoing dialogue to reach a deal, he said.
Thai officials are optimistic about finalising an agreement before the Aug 1 deadline set by President Donald Trump. Thailand has pledged to eliminate import duties on 90% of US goods and to remove various non-tariff barriers.
The government has also offered to increase purchases of US agricultural and energy products in a bid to reduce its trade surplus, which stood at US$46 billion last year.
The US was Thailand's largest export destination in 2024, accounting for approximately 18% of total shipments. Thai exports have increased by about 15% in the first five months of this year, driven by accelerated orders ahead of the anticipated tariff implementation.
Some of the US demands in trade talks go beyond tariff and non-tariff reductions and cover geopolitical issues, Pichai told a trade seminar in Bangkok on Monday. Conceding to such demands may spark domestic unrest, he said, adding that any agreement with the US must be mutually beneficial and sustainable for Thailand in the long term.
US demands regarding local content requirements are unlikely to have a major impact as Thailand's exports are mostly from older industries with high domestic inputs, Pichai said.
The US has threatened higher tariffs on countries suspected of rerouting Chinese goods to avoid the trade war. Trump recently announced a deal with Vietnam that includes a 20% tariff on exports and a 40% rate on products considered to be transshipped.
Thailand is among several countries that have received tariff warning letters from the Trump administration and is now racing to finalise a deal to avoid steep levies.
Failure to secure reduced tariffs from its largest export market could lead to a sharp decline in shipments and shave up to one percentage point off the nation's projected economic growth. - Bloomberg

Elon Musk's xAI inks Pentagon deal for contentious Grok chatbot

NEW YORK: Elon Musk's xAI, which features a large language model that has spewed Hitler-supporting rhetoric and antisemitic tropes, said on Monday it has signed a deal to provide its services to the US Department of Defence. Launched at the end of 2023, Grok has rarely been out of the headlines for its offensive gaffes, and will now offer its services as "Grok for Government." In addition to the Pentagon contract, "every federal government department, agency, or office (can now) purchase xAI products" thanks to its inclusion on an official supplier list, xAI added. After an update on July 7, the chatbot praised Adolf Hitler in some responses, denounced on X "anti-white hate", and described Jewish representation in Hollywood as "disproportionate." xAI apologised on Saturday for the extremist and offensive messages, and said it had corrected the instructions that led to the incidents. The new version of the chatbot, Grok 4, presented on Wednesday, consulted Musk's positions on some questions it was asked before responding, an AFP correspondent observed. The contract between xAI and the Department of Defense comes even as Musk and President Donald Trump are locked in a bitter feud. The two men became close during Trump's latest run for the presidency and, following the inauguration, the Republican billionaire entrusted Musk with managing the new agency known as DOGE, aimed at slashing the government by firing tens of thousands of civil servants. After ending his assignment in May, the South African-born entrepreneur publicly criticised Trump's major budget bill for increasing government debt. The president and the businessman engaged in heated exchanges on social media and in public statements before Musk apologised for some of his more combative messages. The government and the defence sector are considered a potential growth driver for AI giants. Meta has partnered with the start-up Anduril to develop virtual reality headsets for soldiers and law enforcement, while in June OpenAI secured a contract to provide AI services to the US military.

Zelenskiy thanks Trump for readiness to support Ukraine

KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday he had spoken to U.S. President Donald Trump after his announcement of new weapons for Ukraine and thanked him for his support. 'It was a very good conversation. I thanked him for his readiness to support Ukraine and to continue working together to stop the killings and establish a lasting and just peace,' Zelenskiy wrote on the Telegram messaging app. Zelenskiy said he and Trump had agreed to speak more frequently and 'continue coordinating our steps'. He also said he had a very good conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who met with Trump at the White House on Monday. Trump told reporters he was disappointed in Russian President Vladimir Putin and that billions of dollars of U.S. weapons would go to Ukraine. He also threatened sanctions on buyers of Russian exports unless Russia agreed to a peace deal, expressing frustration at repeated Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. But the threat of sanctions came with a 50-day grace period. The weapons would include Patriot air defence missiles, which Ukraine has urgently sought. Zelenskiy had earlier met U.S. special envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, where they discussed boosting Ukraine's air defences and Kyiv buying weapons with European help. Trump had said on Sunday that he would send Patriot air defence missiles to Ukraine. 'We discussed the path to peace and what we can practically do together to bring it closer. This includes strengthening Ukraine's air defence, joint production, and procurement of defence weapons in collaboration with Europe,' Zelenskiy wrote on X. 'And of course, sanctions against Russia and those who help it.' Trump, who began his second term with a more conciliatory approach to Russia, has in recent weeks signalled disenchantment with Putin as Moscow has stepped up air strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. An air-raid alert was declared in Kyiv shortly after the meeting between Kellogg and Zelenskiy on Monday. - Reuters

Zelensky Welcomes New NATO-US Deal on Patriot Missile Deliveries

ISTANBUL, July 15 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday welcomed a new NATO-US arrangement to deliver Patriot missile systems and other military aid to Ukraine, following talks with US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. In a statement posted on X, Zelensky described his conversation with Trump as 'very good,' adding that they discussed efforts 'to stop the killings and establish a lasting and just peace.' He said Trump had briefed him on his earlier meeting with Rutte and stressed the importance of increased defence spending by Alliance members, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. bootstrap slideshow 'We reviewed steps to improve protection against Russian attacks and agreed to coordinate our actions moving forward,' said Zelensky. He also spoke with Rutte, who updated him on the discussions in Washington and reaffirmed NATO's ongoing support for Ukraine. 'We appreciate the readiness to provide additional Patriot systems. The US, Germany, and Norway are already working jointly on this,' Zelensky said, noting that further weapons deliveries were expected to strengthen Ukraine's defences. 'Russia must be forced to stop the killings. This war continues solely because of Russia due to Putin's desire to prolong it. Peace is only possible through strength,' he added. Zelensky also underscored the need to cut off Russia's war financing and to end its military ties with Iran and North Korea. He said new joint decisions were in the works with the US, Germany and Norway regarding Patriot air defence systems, alongside long-term defence agreements with Washington.
