ICC ODI rankings: Rohit Sharma jumps to 2nd spot a day after training return and Babar Azam's West Indies flop show
A day after India's 50-overs captain Rohit Sharma was reported to have hit training for the first time since the end of the IPL 2025 season, the 38-year-old Mumbaikar moved closer to the top spot in the International Cricket Council's (ICC) ODI batting rankings, vaulting to second place over Pakistan's Babar Azam. Despite not featuring in an ODI since smashing a rollicking 76 in the final of the 2025 Champions Trophy against New Zealand in Dubai in March, the star India opener moved up a place behind his young teammate Shubman Gill after Babar's repetitive failures in the West Indies. The former Pakistan captain only score 56 runs in the recently-concluded three-match ODI series against West Indies. In the series decider on Tuesday, Babar managed only nine runs as Pakistan crumbled in a 295-run chase, bundling for 92. Besides Rohit and Gill, India possess three other batters in the top 15, with former captain Virat Kohli standing fourth, Shreyas Iyer eighth and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul ranking 15th. Following a largely successful Test tour against England for India under Shubman Gill ending 2-2 recently, reports have circulated on the uncertainty of the future of both Rohit and Kohli in the ODI format. While the two stalwarts had pulled the plug on their T20I careers following the World Cup in the Caribbean last year, Rohit and Kohli both announced their Test retirements within an inteval of few days in May earlier this year. On Tuesday, just days after Virat Kohli posted a photo of himself after a training session in the UK, Rohit also posted a picture of himself with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar in the gym. Nayar reposted that with the caption that said: 'Let it begin'. Rohit has begun training with Nayar at a suburban Mumbai facility after taking a break of a couple of months from cricket following the IPL, according to PTI.

Shashi Tharoor joins stray dog debate following SC order, flags 'unwillingness of municipalities to neutering' canines
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor weighed in on the stray dog debate following the Supreme Court order, stating that that the 'flaw in our system is not lack of resources, but the unwillingness or inability of municipalities to perform the task of rounding up and neutering stray dogs, even when funds have been provided.' Shashi Tharoor's comments come after the Supreme Court on Monday, directed Delhi authorities to remove stray dogs from localities and house them in shelters due to increasing dog bite incidents. "This is a thoughtful response to the problem that is affecting ordinary citizens in every city. We need to protect humans while being humane to dogs. But one point no one mentions is that the flaw in our system is not lack of resources, but the unwillingness or inability of municipalities to perform the task of rounding up and neutering stray dogs, even when funds have been provided. These funds are never actually spent where needed — in making the arrangements that the SC, in understandable exasperation, has now decreed. Perhaps the funds should instead be allotted to Animal Welfare groups and sincere NGOs with a track record of sheltering animals? They are more likely to implement the ABC programme than the municipalities are," Tharoor posted on X. Calling the stray dog situation in the city "extremely grim," the Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Delhi government and municipal bodies to begin removing stray dogs from all local areas without delay and house them in designated dog shelters. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan directed Delhi authorities to set up shelters for about 5,000 dogs within six to eight weeks, to be expanded in phases. The court also warned that anyone obstructing the relocation drive — whether individuals or organisations — could face contempt proceedings. (This is a developing story. ‘Protect Humans While Being Humane To Dogs': Shashi Tharoor On Supreme Court's Stray Dog Verdict
Last Updated: His remarks come after the Supreme Court on August 11 directed the Delhi civic body to round up stray dogs, sterilise them, and permanently house them in shelters Congress leader Shashi Tharoor responded to the Supreme Court's recent order on managing stray dogs in Delhi, calling for a rethink in how funds meant for the task are used, suggesting they be given directly to credible animal welfare organisations instead of municipalities, which he alleged often fail to utilise them for rounding up and neutering stray dogs despite allocations. In a post on X, Tharoor said, 'We need to protect humans while being humane to dogs." The Thiruvananthapuram MP, however, pointed to what he called a deeper flaw in the system — not a shortage of resources, but 'the unwillingness or inability of municipalities to perform the task of rounding up and neutering stray dogs, even when funds have been provided." He alleged that these funds 'are never actually spent where needed — in making the arrangements that the SC, in understandable exasperation, has now decreed." This is a thoughtful response to the problem that is affecting ordinary citizens in every city. We need to protect humans while being humane to dogs. But one point no one mentions is that the flaw in our system is not lack of resources, but the unwillingness or inability of… — Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) August 13, 2025 Suggesting a solution, Tharoor wrote, 'Perhaps the funds should instead be allotted to Animal Welfare groups and sincere NGOs with a track record of sheltering animals? They are more likely to implement the ABC programme than the municipalities are." His remarks come after the Supreme Court on August 11 directed the Delhi civic body to round up stray dogs, sterilise them, and permanently house them in shelters to make the capital safe. The bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said there should be 'no compromise" on the drive and warned of strict action against anyone obstructing it. The court also ordered the creation of dog shelters with adequate staff and CCTV within eight weeks and mandated that sterilised dogs should not be released back onto the streets. The first phase of the drive targets the capture of 5,000 stray dogs from high-risk areas within six weeks, with daily logs to be maintained and strict penalties for any violations. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
