Insider reveals new Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers played huge role in George Pickens trade
Aaron Rodgers is finally a Pittsburgh Steeler — but at what cost?
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, acquiring the four-time MVP may have come at the expense of WR George Pickens, as the Steelers were allegedly worried about the dynamic between the two larger-than-life personalities — ultimately leading to his trade to the Dallas Cowboys:
"Staying with Pittsburgh-related matters, the Steelers moved on from Pickens for a few reasons. His maturity issues were well-known within Pittsburgh's locker room and front office. So, the Steelers made the evaluation that Pickens and Rodgers probably would not hit it off."
Considering Rodgers' infamous red line incident with then-Jets WR Mike Williams, and Pickens' consistent on- and off-the-field behavior, it was probably for the best that Pittsburgh decided to cut ties with their wide receiver earlier than his projected 2026 exit — avoiding a character conflict in the locker room.
Will the Steelers ultimately acquire one of Rodgers' former teammates, like Jets WR Allen Lazard, to alleviate some of the growing pains? Or will Pittsburgh rely on the in-house wideouts to replace Pickens' productivity?

Rays All-Star Second Baseman Positioned as Likely Trade Candidate
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Change could be coming for the Tampa Bay Rays in the offseason. Back-to-back disappointing seasons after five straight years of postseason baseball could lead the front office to focus on a rebuild. If that is the direction the Rays decide to go, a fan favorite and longtime second baseman could be at the forefront of trades. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - AUGUST 09: Brandon Lowe #8 of the Tampa Bay Rays hits a home run against the Seattle Mariners during the first inning at T-Mobile Park on August 09, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - AUGUST 09: Brandon Lowe #8 of the Tampa Bay Rays hits a home run against the Seattle Mariners during the first inning at T-Mobile Park on August 09, 2025 in Seattle, Report's Kerry Miller believes that second baseman Brandon Lowe could be a likely trade candidate in the offseason. "Quite simply, it's what the Rays do," Miller wrote. "They sign players to escalating contracts, milk the early years of said contract for all they're worth and then pass the buck to someone else willing to pay for the latter years in which the ROI potential is nowhere near as high." We've seen this in the past with Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Isaac Paredes and more. It's rare for players to spend a majority of their careers with Tampa Bay due to the organizations willingness to move players each and every season. Lowe was drafted by the Rays back in 2015 and has spent all eight seasons of his career with the team. He's a two-time All-Star and has finished top 10 in MVP voting twice in his career. Throw the COVID-shortened 2020 season to the side and this year has been among the best of Lowe's career. He entered Monday with a slash line of .272/.318/.492 with 13 doubles, 24 home runs and 61 RBI. Very few players in MLB are as rock steady as Brandon Lowe. A 154 wRC+ since June 1st. The veteran has smacked 24 HR across 99 games this year…career fWAR 16.8 at 30 y/o. Not appreciated enough. — Sam Fosberg (@discussbaseball) August 14, 2025 Lowe has a $11.5 million club option for next season, and it is unclear if Tampa Bay will be willing to pick up that option. Picking up the option and still trading Lowe is certainly a route the Rays could choose. If they did, there should be plenty of suitors for the eight-year veteran. Browns announce starting QB and it isn't former Steelers first-rounder Kenny Pickett
One of the most hilarious offseason running jokes within the AFC North has finally come to an end — the Cleveland Browns have selected a starting QB, and it isn't former Steelers first-rounder Kenny Pickett. After the Browns hosted a four-man QB competition, Cleveland announced 17-year veteran Joe Flacco would be the starter moving forward — potentially killing off any hope of a Pickett-Steelers revenge game in Week 6. Despite teammate Diontae Johnson naming Pickett as the front-runner ahead of Flacco, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel, the former Steeler's hamstring injury likely forced the Browns' hand in their selection. Now that the starting QB battle is over, many expect the Browns to part ways with one of their four quarterbacks — but whether that's Pickett, Sanders, or Gabriel remains to be seen. Joe Flacco's first Browns stint, revisited: Stats, results from 2023
The Cleveland Browns have officially named Joe Flacco their Week 1 starter for the 2025 season, marking the veteran's first Week 1 start since 2022. But it's far from Flacco's first start for the Browns despite him joining them as a free agent this offseason. Flacco, 40, made five regular season starts and one playoff start for Cleveland in 2023, playing well enough to secure a playoff appearance for the Browns. He also started their one postseason game that year. After that season, Flacco won the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year award over heavy favorite and Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. JOE FLACCO: Browns name 18-year veteran starting QB for Week 1 of 2025 NFL season Flacco parlayed that excellent stretch into a one-year stint with the Indianapolis Colts in 2024. He appeared in eight games and started six of them to the tune of a 2-4 record with a 65.3% completion rate and 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions. USA TODAY Sports revisited the 18-year veteran's late-season cameo for the Browns in 2023 in honor of his being named the team's Week 1 starter this year. Here's a recap of Flacco's performance in 2023: Joe Flacco 2023 stats: How veteran fared in first Browns stint Flacco took over as the starter for the Browns in Week 13 of the 2023 season following a season-ending shoulder injury to Deshaun Watson and a concussion to then-Browns backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson. After losing his first start in Cleveland, Flacco ripped off four straight wins between Weeks 14 and 17 to secure a spot in the playoffs for the Browns by Week 18. In each of those four wins, the then-38-year-old passed for over 300 yards and threw for multiple touchdowns. Flacco and many of the Browns' starters rested for the season finale before heading to Houston to face the Texans in the wild-card round. The Super Bowl 47 MVP completed 73.9% of his passes for 307 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in Cleveland's 45-14 loss. Flacco's upcoming Week 1 start will be his first start for the Browns since that playoff game in Houston and his first Week 1 start since 2022 with the New York Jets.
