As a permanently sleep-deprived mother of two, it's perhaps not surprising I lose my train of thought on a regular basis, but even before having kids I had experienced that disorienting feeling of walking purposefully into a room and then thinking 'Why on earth am I here?'
Chances are you have too. In fact, this might even happen to you on a regular basis, leading you to worry that it's an early indicator of losing your memory. However, the good news is that it's actually a very common phenomenon; so common that it's been dubbed 'The Doorway Effect'. Scientists have researched this particular brain glitch to find out what causes us to forget our intentions as soon as we enter a new room, and come up with interesting results.
The Doorway Effect was first documented by the University of Notre Dame in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology. The research saw participants carry objects through real and virtual environments, analysing how their memory performed across the various settings.
The study found participants were most likely to forget what they were holding or doing after walking through a doorway, more so than if they travelled exactly the same distance within one room. This coined the term 'event boundary', a notion that your brain likes to categorise experiences into episodes. A doorway acts as both a physical and psychological barrier that the brain interprets as the end of one event and the beginning of another. As you cross the doorway (or boundary), your memory drops anything it deems irrelevant.
The loss of visual cues as you move from one space to another also explains why you forget what you're planning to do. When a person develops an immediate intention, such as charging a phone, the brain connects the task to cues that are visible in its current environment, like a laptop or a desk. As you enter a new room, the brain builds a new mental map of the space, finding anything of relevance. If the original context cues are no longer available, this can hinder the brain from retrieving the goal it set just moments earlier.
'Although annoying, entering a room and forgetting why indicates that your brain is performing exactly as it should by optimising what it deems relevant in the moment and temporarily 'deleting' short-term goals a little earlier than needed,' says HealthTest.
I've definitely experienced the 'Doorway Effect' more since becoming a parent, which makes sense because studies have found that those experiencing a high cognitive load are most likely to forget their short-term goals, particularly when switching tasks.
Additionally, research at the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Neurology revealed that insufficient sleep impacts short-term memory encoding and retrieval, ensuring that the more tired or 'emotionally busy' you are, the more likely your brain is to forget its task mid-walk.
Luckily, there are things you can do to help yourself retain those all-important plans as you move from room to room. Saying your intention out loud as you walk might make your family laugh at you, but it will help cement it in your mind. Another tip is to visualise the task as if you're already doing it when you set your intention, so it's less likely to drop out of your brain as soon as you leave the room.
Finally, if you're constantly juggling a long list of tasks (like trying to get yourself and the kids out of the door in the morning), then having visual cues, like a book bag left by the door, or notes stuck around in key places (reminding you to bring the packed lunches etc) can be helpful.

Moon jellyfish are the most common species in UK seas, easily identified by its markings of four purple circles within its translucent white bell. The bell has a layer of mucus over it, which the moon jellyfish uses to catch plankton, which it inserts into its mouth using special tentacles. Nasa launched more than 2,478 young moon jellyfish in a container into space in 1991 to study the effects of microgravity on the gravity-sensitive organs of the species. Although they did not reach the moon, scientists discovered that the space-born jellyfish had difficulty swimming in Earth's gravity, as their nervous system had adapted too well to microgravity. The largest species of jellyfish in the world is the lion's mane, which gets its name from its up to 3-metre-long, hair-like tentacles that look like, yes, a lion's mane. These reddish-brown tentacles are packed with stinging cells and are used to prey upon fish and smaller jellyfish. The largest recorded lion's mane specimen was found off the coast of Massachusetts, US, in 1865. It had a bell diameter of 210cm and tentacles measuring about 36.6 metres long. Although not fatal, the sting of a lion's mane jellyfish can cause serious discomfort to a person, from localised redness and pain to vomiting and chest pain. A 34-year-old woman was taken to hospital in 2016 after suffering an allergic reaction from the sting of six lion's mane jellyfish. Another large species to look out for is the barrel jellyfish, with a bell diameter of as much as 90cm and which weigh as much as 35kg. They have eight frilly tentacles and, due to their enormous size, are often found washed up on beaches after searching for prey in shallow waters. Fish and small crabs are known to seek shelter within the tentacles of the barrel specimen, as a safe space from predators. The sting of a barrel jellyfish is typically mild and does not cause real harm to people. Countries across the world and particularly in south-east Asia have eaten barrel jellyfish for more than 1,700 years. The mauve stinger is a small and beautiful jellyfish, typically coloured pink, purple or a bluey purple, and packs a punch with its 3-metre long tentacles full of stinging cells. The mauve stinger has one of the worst stings of all the species and can glow brightly at night when disturbed, giving it the scientific name Pelagia noctiluca, which translates to 'night-light of the sea'. A common summer visitor to the UK is the compass jellyfish, named for its brown lined markings running down the centre of its yellowish-white bell that resemble a compass. When the compass jellyfish stings something, it often detaches a tentacle and leaves it behind, which can still sting despite not being connected to a body. The species, frequently encountered in Cornish coastal waters, can inflict a lot of pain from its sting, which should be rinsed with warm water for 30 minutes to reduce the pain. The nearly transparent and bioluminescent crystal jellyfish can emit light and exhibit a bright green light when exposed to light ranging from blue to ultraviolet. With up to 150 tentacles, this unique jelly is often used in scientific experiments for its bioluminescent properties and proteins, which have revolutionised fields such as cell biology, neuroscience and disease research. Their sting is considered not strong enough to penetrate through human skin and cause harm, but is strong enough to harm and paralyse their prey in the water. The blue jellyfish, similar in shape to the lion's mane species, can be colourless when young and develop its blue-purple bell once mature. This species can have up to 800 fine tentacles that resemble a head of hair; the jellyfish uses these tentacles to direct food – including other jellyfish – towards its mouth. The venom from a blue jellyfish sting can cause serious pain, which can last for hours or even days. Although the sting is nonlethal, it can be potentially dangerous for young children, elderly people, and those with allergies such as anaphylaxis.

A pristine stretch of Lake Tahoe's southern shore that is normally buzzing with sunbathers, swimmers, and paddle-boarders, has suddenly fallen quiet after the water became contaminated. Federal officials issued an urgent warning on Friday advising the public to stay out of the water near Camp Richardson Resort after testing revealed 'high levels' of E. coli bacteria lurking beneath the lake's famously clear surface following a sewage leak. The US Forest Service's Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit sounded the alarm urging beachgoers, boaters, and swimmers to avoid all recreational water activity between Jameson Beach and the Valhalla Boathouse. While the bacteria levels at those two endpoints do not yet exceed state standards, the entire area is being treated as a hot zone until further testing proves otherwise. E. coli is a bacteria most commonly found in the intestines of people and animals. While many strains are harmless, certain types can cause severe illness, including diarrhea, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and even life-threatening sepsis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC advises people to never swallow lake water and to wash hands thoroughly after contact with natural water sources, even when no contamination is suspected. The Lake Tahoe warning underscores how quickly a hidden threat can emerge in one of California's most popular summer destinations. In the wake of the discovery, a coordinated emergency response effort has sprung into action. The USDA Forest Service, Camp Richardson Resort, El Dorado County Environmental Management, Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board, and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency are now working in tandem to contain the contamination. Tests taken east and west of Camp Richardson have so far shown no elevated levels, but officials aren't taking chances. With peak summer tourism in full swing, the advisory has left vacationers shocked and local business owners bracing for the fallout. It's not Lake Tahoe's first brush with bacterial contamination. Last summer, 125,000-gallons of raw sewage spilled into the waters in front of a popular North Shore restaurant. Authorities were forced to close two beaches as bacteria levels spiked. That incident led to a months-long investigation, culminating last month in an $850,000 fine levied against Caltrans and the North Tahoe Public Utility District, after officials concluded a contractor accidentally pierced a sewage main. The latest leak is smaller but equally dangerous. Experts warn that even moderate E. coli exposure can pose serious health risks, particularly to children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Officials say the water will continue to be monitored daily, with additional samples being collected over the weekend.
