Callinan no-show, will be back after pre-Burleigh baby

The waves arrived but so did Ryan Callinan's newborn, the pre-tournament delivery forcing the Australian to miss his opening-round Gold Coast Pro heat.
Callinan's wife gave birth on Friday night, meaning the Newcastle product was a no-show when the Championship Tour returned to the Gold Coast for the first time since 2019 on Saturday morning.
He will still feature though, set to return for the sudden-death second round that will also include high-profile compatriots Jack Robinson and Julian Wilson.
Bells Beach champion and No.3-ranked Robinson (9.13 points) couldn't get going in his heat against Alan Cleland (10.27) and Callum Robson (13.26).
Wilson (14.07), back at CT level for the first time since his 2019 retirement after winning qualifying on Friday, was shot down in a high-scoring heat by No.1-ranked Italo Ferreira (16.03) and Burleigh Heads local Liam O'Brien (15.77).
Australian No.2 Ethan Ewing won his heat and was encouraged by what he saw from the building Burleigh swell after a season stunted by below-par conditions.
Jordan Lawler will also surf in a sudden-death second-round heat, while Joel Vaughan is yet to enter the water.
Stephanie Gilmore, an eight-time world champion and six-time event winner, will compete for the first time since August 2023 as a wildcard.
There are five other Australian women in the field, including Bells Beach champion Isabella Nichols.
The Gold Coast stop was shifted from the traditional Snapper Rocks location due to erosion created by Cyclone Alfred in March.

Strengthening presence through localised product offerings, enhanced logistics infrastructure, and strategic sports marketing initiatives SEOUL, South Korea, Aug. 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- NEXEN TYRE, a leading global tyre manufacturer, has officially launched the 'ROADIAN ATX' in the Australian market, intensifying its efforts to tap into the country's robust demand for high-inch tyres used on SUVs and Utes. Specifically engineered for both on- and off-road performance, the ROADIAN ATX is optimised for Australia's diverse driving conditions – from desert highways and mountainous terrain to unpaved outback trails and coastal roads. Liverpool offer Alexander Isak ultimatum to Newcastle

Newcastle kicked off their Premier League season on Saturday with a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. The Magpies' lack of a centre forward was sorely exposed - with Liverpool target Alexander Isak in exile. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Anthony Gordon played up front instead of the 25-year-old Swede - but he and his teammates could not prevent the Geordies from drawing a blank. The atmosphere turned toxic in the aftermath - with Newcastle fans making their feelings known over Isak's conduct as he seeks a move to Anfield. Isak to Liverpool in the next seven days It's hard to see a way back for the forward - and the sooner he's allowed to complete his move to Liverpool the better. Newcastle will need to sign a new striker in his place - with Goncalo Ramos the latest name in the frame. This situation is currently helping nobody and the signs are that the saga is heading for a speedy conclusion. That's according to a new report from Sacha Tavolieri - who claims Liverpool have given Newcastle a one-week timeframe in which to agree a deal. Liverpool won't wait forever 'Liverpool FC won't wait forever for Alexander Isak,' he wrote on X. 'Despite mutual interest and the Swedish being the top priority, the Reds have set a deadline. 'If no agreement is reached with Newcastle by next week, the door will be wide open for… other targets.' No way back for Isak The North East side are looking for around £150m for their star attraction - but the Reds' sporting director Richard Hughes is said to be hopeful of completing a deal for around £135m. There is little chance of Isak resuming his Newcastle career under the current circumstances - and by this time next week we could see Liverpool end up with their new No9. Tavolieri's suggestion that the Reds are prepared to move for a different striker is intriguing. Having seen the likes of Joao Pedro, Benjamin Sesko, Victor Osimhen and Jonathan David move elsewhere this summer there a relatively few other names in the frame. Maybe it could be Bradley Barcola - or else Hughes and head coach Arne Slot have a different name in mind.

Brentford analysis: Andrews faces testing times in rebuild

It has been a summer of change for Brentford, most notably in Thomas Frank and assistant Justin Cochrane being poached by London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Keith Andrews was promoted to the top job, but has had to deal with the loss of key players Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard and Mark Flekken - all sold in this transfer window. Forward Yoane Wissa could soon be on his way too, with the Newcastle target left out of the Bees squad for the City Ground trip. Andrews' first starting XI included debuts for keeper Caoimhin Kelleher, £17m Dutch attacking midfielder Antoni Milambo and right-back Michael Kayode, while Jordan Henderson made his Premier League return as a second-half substitute. Former Republic of Ireland international Andrews has had to rebuild as he tries to maintain Brentford's impressive record of never having been in the relegation zone across the last four seasons. That is a record they still maintain for now, but they are only out of the bottom three on goal difference. All of Andrews' best-laid plans went out the window after the first meaningful attack of the match. First, the corner was needless - captain Nathan Collins stepped in front of Kelleher and turned the ball behind, when the keeper was about to collect the ball under no pressure. Boss Andrews, the club's former set-piece coach, could then only look on in dismay as three blue-shirted players around Chris Wood got in each others' way from the corner, allowing the New Zealander to turn home a loose ball for the opening goal. Brentford had little in response after that.
