Leicester strike late after resistance of beleaguered Sheff Wed players and fans

Wednesday have had to endure a turbulent off-season and are under a number of Football League-imposed embargoes for various financial breaches, including the payment of wages to players and staff being delayed for the last three months.
Wednesday fans made their feelings known to Chansiri by delaying their entry to their seats and the away end was visibly empty as the players came onto the pitch at the King Power Stadium, with a banner that read 'SWFC for sale – enough is enough'.
The Owls had just 15 senior players on the books ahead of their season-opener but produced a determined display against the Foxes.
After five minutes, the fans made their way into the ground and were greeted with applause from the Leicester fans.
For Wednesday, it was an achievement of its own to be on the pitch for the first game but they stunned the King Power into silence when Nathaniel Chalobah gave the visitors a shock lead midway through the first half, and it was thoroughly deserved.
Wednesday's resilience was broken when Jannik Vestergaard equalised early in the second period and, if Wednesday already did not have a mountain to climb, captain Barry Bannan was sent off with 14 minutes to play.
Leicester, who started a new era after relegation from the Premier League under new boss Marti Cifuentes, left it late to grab the winner through Faes and were reminded that life back in the Championship may not be as plain sailing as the last time they were in the second tier.
A spirited Wednesday side almost grabbed an early opener, Chalobah driving forward with the ball an unleashing an effort which needed to be tipped onto the post by Jakub Stolarczyk.
Pierce Charles was brought into action with three routine saves in first 15 minutes but the hosts came closest when Bilal El Khannouss' effort from distance was marginally dragged wide.
Against the script, an already emotional away end erupted in the 26th minute.
Yan Valery cut the ball back to Chalobah on the edge of the box and he sent a strike towards goal which deflected off Oliver Skipp and into the net.
Leicester should have been on level terms three minutes before the break – a corner whipped towards the back post was headed back across goal by Caleb Okoli but Vestergaaard headed wide.
Leicester wanted a penalty at end of the half when El Khannous' strike seemingly hit the arm of Bannan as boos rang around the stadium at the break.

The Foxes put Wednesday under the pump at the beginning of the second period as the visitors could not get out of their own half and the pressure paid.
El Khannouss' low delivery from a free-kick evaded everyone inside the box and Vestergaard pounced to finish high into the net.
Valery and Chalobah both went off injured and Wednesday's task was made harder when Bannan was given his marching orders for a second booking for a late challenge on Harry Winks.
Leicester finally found the winner three minutes from time.
Charles was in inspired form and he denied a Patson Daka header from point blank range but there was nothing he could do from the resulting corner when El Khannouss whipped a corner onto the head of Faes, who guided home.

Hamza Igamane a Rennes transfer 'priority' as two Rangers striker deals vetoed amid Turgeman talks

The Moroccan has been the subject of interest from across Europe throughout the summer Stade Rennes have reportedly made Rangers striker Hamza Igamane a signing priority as they prepare for life without Arnaud Kalimuendo. ‌ Record Sport understands that Feyenoord are considering shattering their own transfer record by launching a big money move for the striker - while Lille have kept tables on the Morocco international throughout the summer. ‌ L'Equipe report that striker Kalimuendo has rejected a move to Leeds United - but the club remain in talks for a £20million sale to either Newcastle United or Brentford. ‌ Boss Habib Beye conceded earlier this week: "I have to anticipate certain things. If things change, we have to be able to see other solutions. "For now, Arnaud is a Stade Rennes player, whom I consider 100 per cent committed to this club, but I have to be able to anticipate in case something happens before the Marseille match (on Friday)." While Rangers' boss Russell Martin has stated there has been no bids for Igamane and expects him to ramp up his fitness against Alloa this weekend, Jeunes Footeux report that Rennes are considering an approach for the £15million-rated 22-year-old. But the French side are far from alone in the search for Igamane's signature with Moroccan outlet Le Matin stating that Marseille, Strasbourg, and Lens are also tracking a deal from Ligue 1. Everton, West Ham and Brentford are said to be keen to take the forward to the Premier League, while Borussia Monchengladbach and Udinese are also named as interested suitors. A departure for Igamane would leave Rangers in dire need of a new frontman with Cyriel Dessers facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up a knock in the Champions League qualifier with Viktoria Plzen. Westerlo striker Matija Frigan, however, looks to be off the table. Italian transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio has stated that the striker is set to seal a move to Parma with a medical already pencilled in. ‌ The England youth international - who was previously on Rangers' radar back in 2022 - only made the move to St Mary's last summer in a £15million move from Aston Villa but struggled with the club in the Premier League last season. ‌ But new boss Will Still has shown his faith in the forward - giving him his first start of the season in the EFL Cup against Northampton Town. On Archer, he said: "He needs to go back to doing what he's good at. "He needs to go back to getting in behind and being in the box because the threat of his pace and movement is going to be important for us. ‌ "It's about giving him a bit of freedom and a bit of confidence to go and do that and get into the areas where he can finish actions off. That is what we need him for." Maccabi Tel Aviv star Dor Turgeman has been on the shortlist of targets this summer. over an exit clear with the Scottish Premiership named as his preferred destination - but there has been little movement in recent weeks. But the Light Blues might have to move quickly to break the stalemate. One report that MLS side New England Revolution have "offered" £2.6million - which has been rejected. It is claimed talks remain ongoing between the clubs with the report suggesting there is "some distance" between the valuations - but it is expected that Turgeman will leave the Israeli champions before the window closes. Revolution head coach Caleb Porter declared last week that transfer fees will not scare off his side: 'We don't have much cap, but we do have roster openings, and we have the potential to make moves."

Arne Slot claims Liverpool hurt by ‘honesty' after ‘weird' referee decision in Community Shield

Arne Slot believes Liverpool can be too honest for their own good and says their reluctance to dive is costing them free-kicks. Head coach Slot is adamant he will not tell his players to change, but remains aggrieved that Ryan Gravenberch was booked for diving against Crystal Palace in May, because he thinks Liverpool are the fairest team in the league. Slot was further annoyed when new signing Florian Wirtz stayed on his feet in the Community Shield and referee Chris Kavanagh did not penalise Palace. Gravenberch is suspended for Liverpool's Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Friday, though, because of a straight red card he received against Palace that, contrary to Slot's recollection, meant he would have been banned anyway. But the Dutchman said: 'It's not funny – I can find another word - but everyone has forgotten how he got his suspension, he got two yellow cards; the first for a dive. If there is one team in the league that is, in my opinion, the most honest when we play. 'I sometimes blame them that they never try to make from a foul a little bit more, and never dive and never time delays, and all these kind of things, then it is us and we have a suspension now for a player diving.' Slot watched his former club Feyenoord lose a Champions League qualifier against Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce and felt they were more streetwise than Liverpool. He explained: 'I saw this week Fenerbahce v Feyenoord and I saw a lot of moments where players were really smart. These kind of things, should we use them? I'm not so sure. For me, the best game last season I was part of was Paris Saint-Germain against us, especially our home game. I liked that a little bit more than the away game. 'It was so high intensity because both teams were just here to play and not to try to pretend a foul was more or time delaying. I am most proud of the fact of who we are, and we won the league last season with the team we were so let us stay who we are. 'I think it was a great moment in the game against Palace – I talked to the fourth official about it - they hold Florian in midfield and he didn't fall over, and the referee says 'If you don't fall, I don't give a free-kick, which is a little bit weird. 'Then a fraction later they fell down in a moment which wasn't even a foul and the referee thought: 'Oh, he fell down so it probably is a foul'. 'We had much more ball possession than Palace, but we made 13 fouls and they made five. That tells you also about who we are. I'm not saying Palace are different to us, let that not be the headline. But we are a very fair team, that is clear also maybe the reason we won the league so why change something which went well.'

Tony Adams urges Mikel Arteta to strip Martin Odegaard of captaincy in brutal assessment

Martin Odegaard has been Arsenal captain for the last three years but Mikel Arteta has now been told to make a change with the Norwegian's successor having already been picked out Tony Adams has demanded that Mikel Arteta AXE Martin Odegaard as Arsenal captain if he wants to win the Premier League. The Norwegian playmaker was appointed Gunners skipper ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. ‌ He became the first man to hold the armband full-time since former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of the role. And Odegaard's appointment has coincided with a period of success for the club having gone close to winning the Premier League in each of the past three seasons. ‌ Despite that, former captain Adams believes it is now time for Arteta to hand the armband to someone else - and believes Rice is the perfect candidate. He said: 'He's got a really big call to make this year and for me he hasn't done it. ‌ 'The call is to make Declan Rice the captain. I think Declan is my kind of captain, and it might free Odegaard up to play with a bit more freedom. "Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club that you think can actually take you to the next level.' And should Arteta make the move to appoint Rice, Adams believes that it could bring Arsenal towards finally winning the Premier League for the first time in 20 years. Adams added: 'I'm just saying he's got an opportunity this year to actually turn into a winner. 'To win league titles, you have to be a [Jurgen] Klopp, you have to be a [Sir Alex] Ferguson. You have to lead by example, you have to be a winner, you have to go about your business. And that reflects in your captain. 'And I'm seeing Declan Rice as a captain but I'm saying to Arteta: 'Come on, step up now. It's your time to be a winning manager and a fantastic manager, because you're not going to win the league with Odegaard as captain.' ‌ 'You've got someone in there who's going to play every game all season, that's going to encourage people to come in and lay the foundations of a title-winning team. Declan Rice can do that, Odegaard can't. Come on Arteta, make him captain.' Despite Arteta sticking with Odegaard, the Spaniard hasn't been afraid to make changes to other aspects of his squad. The North London side have spent just under £200m this summer - Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke all among the headline arrivals. Arsenal get their latest Premier League campaign underway on Sunday as they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford.
