SIU investigating after Hamilton man barricades himself in home, dies while police on scene
Ontario's police watchdog is investigating the death of a 62-year-old man while interacting with Hamilton officers.
At about 7:30 a.m. on Friday, a man contacted Hamilton police saying he had explosive devices, said the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in a news release.
He "demanded" a negotiator come to his home near Barton Street East and Sherman Avenue North, the SIU said.
"Police contained the residence, and negotiations took place throughout th day with the barricaded man," said the SIU.
Police sent a drone into the home in the late afternoon and found he'd died.
"It revealed the man lying on the floor, blood visible around him," said the news release.
Hamilton police said the SIU invoked its mandate and there will be investigators on scene throughout the weekend.
The SIU investigates police interactions with the public that involve death, serious injury or sexual assault.
It said it's assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

It says Berkiw worked as a machinist and had become 'preoccupied' with concerns about not getting paid from his job, and began acting in unusual and paranoid ways in the lead-up to the killing. The ruling says the couple lived with their adult son, who had called police over his father's 'bizarre behaviour' on Jan. 8 and Jan. 12, 2024, but officers determined he didn't meet the criteria to be apprehended 'under the Mental Health Act because nobody indicated he presented an immediate risk to himself or anyone else.' The court ruling says Berkiw attacked his wife with a knife on Jan. 17, stabbing her before being taken to the ground by his son, and she called police in 'extreme distress,' telling the call-taker that her husband was mentally ill and 'trying to kill everybody.' The ruling says Berkiw broke free of his son's grasp and got another knife, slashing his wife's throat and cutting his son, who had tried to protect her, and the court found he was suffering from a mental disorder that included 'delusional beliefs' that rendered him 'incapable of knowing that his actions were morally wrong.' Ottawa police seek help locating missing teen

Police describe her as 5-foot-8 (173 cm) tall and fair-skinned, with brown hair with red tips, and brown eyes. She identifies as Indigenous.
