Barberton native, Detroit Lions DE John Cominsky announces NFL retirement
Barberton native and Detroit Lions defensive lineman John Cominsky, a five-year NFL veteran, announced his retirement from the league Monday afternoon.
Cominsky made the announcement in an Instagram post.
'After 6 years in the NFL, I am officially medically retiring. I am proud of the career I had, but have accumulated a combination of injuries that are overwhelming my desire to continue playing,' he wrote in part. 'Thank you to the Atlanta Falcons for believing in me and drafting an under the radar DII prospect. Thank you to the Detroit Lions for grabbing me off waivers and giving me a second contract and allowing me to show what I can do as an NFL starter. Thank you to the front offices and coaches that helped build me up and believed in me. Who would have thought a small town Barberton, Ohio QB would find his way to sacking NFL QBs.'
John Cominsky, a former Barberton standout who played in the NFL for Atlanta Falcons and Detroit, jokes with kids during his youth football camp at Rudy Sharkey Stadium.
The Falcons drafted Cominsky in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft out of Division II Charleston (W.Va.). He spent three seasons in Atlanta before being released prior to the 2022 season at his request.

From there, Cominsky made an impact with the Lions before he signed a two-year contract extension in 2023 with Detroit worth $9.5 million with $4 million guaranteed. However, he suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in 2024 and did not play. He cited medical reasons for his retirement from the NFL.
Giving back to Barberton is important to John Cominsky
It was extremely important to Cominsky that he didn't forget his roots. He's made an effort over the years to give back to the community, returning to Barberton for youth football camps.
The youth is the focus of The Cominsky Family Foundation, and Cominsky stays involved as much as possible with the Barberton High School football team, for whom he played quarterback.

'I've always kind of rooted for the underdog myself, and that's how I consider myself, playing Division II ball, not many scholarships out of high school and going the long, hard way,' Cominsky told the Beacon Journal at his 2023 camp. 'So, to inspire kids, that's a lot of what drives me. Obviously, I do it for my family and my faith, but these kids, they come out here, and they're inspired, they're excited and they believe that maybe it's a possibility for them, too, or just [an example of how they can] achieve their dreams."
He finished his career with 107 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
George M. Thomas covers a myriad of things including sports and pop culture, but mostly sports, he thinks, for the Beacon Journal.

Raheem Mostert blasts Dolphins' treatment of Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith
The Dolphins traded cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to the Steelers today, and a former Dolphin says that trade reflects how Miami isn't a place that appreciates top talent. Raheem Mostert, the running back who played three seasons in Miami and was a Pro Bowler in 2023, wrote on social media that the Dolphins getting rid of Ramsey and Smith continues a trend of top players being treated poorly by the franchise. Advertisement "Hot take: Be a Pro-bowler on the Dolphins, get treated like sh*t. Happy for my guys though! GO BALL OUT!!" Mostert wrote. Mostert was released by the Dolphins in February and signed with the Raiders in March. The Dolphins have made a point this offseason of moving on from veteran players, and as one of those veteran players Mostert doesn't appreciate that approach.

How The Falcons Can Balance Their Offense In 2025 Better Than They Did In 2024
How The Falcons Can Balance Their Offense In 2025 Better Than They Did In 2024 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Falcons had big plans of making the playoffs in 2024 with their big signing of Kirk Cousins, but after a 6-3 start, it all fell apart afterwards. The Falcons ended the season 8-9 and missed out on the playoffs once again, but there were some flashes from rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Advertisement In 2024, both Bijan Robinson and Drake London had breakout years, even with inconsistent quarterback play. The Falcons utilized the running game as their main route and it worked to a point, but in 2025 the team will look to utilize the passing game a bunch more. Robinson and Tyler Allgeier will continue to put up big running numbers, while London will also get his targets. Kyle Pitts, Darnell Mooney, KhaDarel Hodge, and Ray-Ray McCloud are all looking to play more key roles in the offense as the 2025 season kicks off in a few months. Each player will need to fill their role and help out the young offense. Advertisement Pitts is coming off a long offseason of trade rumors and will need to be a key piece for the passing game to work wonders in 2025. His inconsistency was a low point for the Falcons offense in 2024 and will need to break out this year for the offense to flow. Being able to have a balanced offense is the key to success in the NFL, and the Falcons will hope that is the case. Falcons Free Agent Signing Must Be A Veteran Leader For The New Wave Of Rookies
Falcons Free Agent Signing Must Be A Veteran Leader For The New Wave Of Rookies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Falcons signed Floyd to a one-year, $10 million contract back in March, so the Falcons would have a veteran on the defense knowing they would go defense-heavy in the draft. Floyd recorded 8.5 sacks in 2024 as a member of the San Francisco 49ers. Advertisement Floyd is a super bowl winner with the Los Angeles Rams and also had stints in Chicago and Buffalo. He was the 9th overall pick in 2016 by Chicago and has had a solid career but is now entering his age 32-33 season. Leonard Floyd© Danielle Parhizkaran/ / USA TODAY NETWORK The Falcons have some veterans in Jessie Bates, Jordan Fuller and A.J. Terrell, who all have been vocal leaders of defenses, including the Falcons. This season will be very different as many starters will be rookies or second year players. Floyd can be a voice to players like Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr., who like Floyd are first round picks. Floyd also has that super bowl experience that the Falcons needed on defense. Advertisement Floyd has career stats of 412 tackles, 66.5 sacks, 2 interceptions and 2 defensive touchdowns. A career journeyman, as someone who has been a leader on multiple teams, now joins a franchise who needs a veteran defensive leader more than anything. The Falcons will now have a veteran leader in the linebacker position. Many veterans that sign one-year deals are more or less rentals on a team, but in the case of Floyd he could resign if all goes well with him and the young stars. There will be a lot to look forward to on this defense in 2025.
