US Ambassador urges Thailand and Cambodia to uphold ceasefire
This appeal follows a recent incident near the Cambodian border where a Thai soldier was injured by a landmine. Thailand has accused Cambodia of planting the device, an accusation that Cambodia denies.
"We obviously condemn actions by either side that call into question the ceasefire, that violate the ceasefire," Kagan stated during the US Independence Day reception held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
He emphasized the importance of both countries taking appropriate steps to ensure their military and civilian personnel are committed to enforcing the ceasefire.
"I don't want to take a position on who's responsible. But we definitely call on both countries to take all appropriate steps to ensure that their military and civilian personnel are doing everything possible to enforce the ceasefire," he said.
Kagan highlighted the necessity for both sides to fully implement the ceasefire and suggested that some form of monitoring could help maintain confidence between the two nations amid rising tensions.
The reception was held to celebrate the 249th anniversary of US independence on July 4 this year.

The delegation was led by Cambodia's Senior Minister in charge of Special Mission on Islamic Affairs, Neak Oknha Datuk Dr Othsman Hassan. The visit was part of Othsman's official working trip to Sarawak from August 12 to 15. Othsman, who is also the Special Envoy of the Cambodian Prime Minister to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and president of the Cambodian Muslim Development Foundation (CMDF), was accompanied by Rofy Othsman, Cambodian Member of Parliament and CMDF vice-president; Nasiet Othsman, adviser to the Royal Government of Cambodia and president of the Cambodian Muslim Youth Federation; and Aly Mosa, adviser to the Royal Government of Cambodia and cabinet member to Othsman. In a Facebook post, Wan Junaidi described the visit as a symbol of friendship and high regard between Sarawak and Cambodia. Thai foreign minister thanks China for support in landmine removal along Thai-Cambodian border
BANGKOK: Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa participated in a trilateral discussion between China, Thailand, and Cambodia, expressing gratitude to China for recognising the necessity of clearing landmines along the Thai-Cambodian border. Maris made these comments during his visit to attend the 10th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Anning, Yunnan Province, China, from August 13 to 15. He said that he had accepted an invitation from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to join an informal tea discussion with the foreign ministers of China, Thailand, and Cambodia. Maris expressed his thanks for China's constructive role in supporting peaceful resolutions to the issues between Thailand and Cambodia through various bilateral mechanisms. This includes ensuring the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement, with Asean's support.
