Ahead of I-Day, Chinese manjha banned in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: With kite flying gaining popularity ahead of Independence Day celebrations , the district administration on Monday issued a strict advisory banning the use of Chinese manjha and urged citizens, especially two-wheeler riders, to exercise caution and follow safety protocols. Deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar, invoking Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Code 2023, ordered a complete prohibition on the storage, sale, purchase, and use of Chinese kite string as well as nylon or synthetic threads within the district. The directive cites the high risk of injuries, accidents, and public disturbance linked to the use of such materials during kite flying. Authorities have appealed to the public to fully comply with the ban and refrain from trading or using any Chinese or synthetic kite strings. The administration also reiterated that the sale, storage, or use of synthetic or metal powder-coated kite strings is a punishable offence. Residents were advised against flying kites near power lines, busy roads, highways, or restricted airspace. They were also cautioned against attempting to retrieve kites caught in power lines due to the risk of fatal electric shocks caused by metallic threads. Prabhat Kumar, a resident of Sector 7, pointed out, "Chinese manjha is easily available in the market. Issuing a ban is good, but authorities must ensure these are removed from shelves as well."
