BSF launches Operation Alert ahead of I-Day

Jaisalmer: Border Security Force (BSF) Monday launched Operation Alert exercise along the western border of Rajasthan to ensure security ahead of Independence Day. Intelligence reports of possible disturbances orchestrated by ISI leaders in Pakistan have also prompted this heightened vigilance, officials said.
Operation Alert will continue till Aug 17. BSF soldiers and officers from all branches are participating in the exercise along the entire international border. Special attention is being given to areas adjoining Sriganganagar and Bikaner, where attempts to smuggle narcotics via drones have been reported.
BSF North Sector DIG Yogendra Singh Rathore stated that Operation Alert is being conducted to prevent infiltration and smuggling attempts in the run-up to Independence Day. BSF personnel and officers will be stationed at the border round the clock, he said.
Additional soldiers have been deployed to sensitive areas. BSF South Sector DIG MK Negi said BSF will also conduct outreach programmes with border residents to increase awareness and cooperation.

Punjab Police have beefed up the security across the state, and all the field units have been directed to remain on high alert in the wake of Independence Day celebrations. (PTI) According to an official spokesman, police teams conducted flag marches at all the sensitive areas in all the 28 police districts simultaneously, followed by cordon and search operations (CASOs) at all the vulnerable spots. Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said that police teams led by CPs/SSPs conducted flag marches in the sensitive and vulnerable areas of their respective districts. 'The exercise was aimed to boost the confidence of the general public, besides preparing police personnel to tackle any untoward situation,' he said. Shukla said that the CPs/SSPs were also directed to conduct a special cordon and search operation (CASO) under the supervision of a SP-rank officer at all the crowded places, including railway stations, bus stands, markets, shopping malls, public parks, etc, across the state. 'We had strictly instructed all the Police personnel to deal with every person in a friendly and polite manner while frisking them during the course of this operation,' he added. He said that around 250 teams, involving over 1,500 police personnel, were deputed across the state to look for suspicious persons in the state, while ensuring minimum inconvenience to the general public. Apart from this, cops have continued their cordon and search operation (CASO) against drugs on Day 165, and conducted raids at 374 locations on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of 73 drug smugglers after registration of 53 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. With this, the total number of drug smugglers arrested has reached 25,719 within 165 days. The Special DGP said that the raids have resulted in the recovery of 2.4 kg of heroin and ₹42,800 drug money from the possession of arrested drug smugglers.

In a major pre-Independence Day crackdown, the Chandigarh Police Operations Cell conducted a major operation against inter-state arms suppliers and drug peddlers and arrested four criminals from Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh. All the accused have been remanded to four days police custody. (HT File) The arrested accused have been identified as Ajit Singh, Amar Singh, Shamshad Ali and Rishab Dev. Police have recovered 1.790kg of charas, 53.90gm heroin and one pistol and one country-made desi katta from the possession of the accused. Police said a gang war has been averted by arresting an active member and sharp shooter of Harpreet, alias Happy Gang. Kingpins of the gangs are managing criminal activities in Punjab and Chandigarh from outside India, the police claimed. One of the accused, Shamshad Ali, alias Jaggi, is a proclaimed offender wanted by Bassi Pathana police station in an attempt to murder and Arms Act cases. During the course of interrogation, accused Ajit Singh disclosed that he was working as a waiter in a Sector-11 hotel in Panchkula. There he came in touch with a drug peddler and started selling drugs in the tricity area. Police said that Ajit used to receive drugs from peddlers in Mandi and Kullu in Himachal Pradesh and distributed the drugs in local areas of tricity. Police said accused Shamshad Ali also disclosed that he is an active member and sharp shooter of Harpreet, alias Happy Gang. Harpreet supplied him illegal weapons for further providing to other gang members active in the tricity area. Accused Shamshad Ali and his associate Gurjant Janta received weapons and drugs on the direction of Harpreet, who is operating the gang from Portugal.
