State on high alert, Punjab Police carry out flag marches
According to an official spokesman, police teams conducted flag marches at all the sensitive areas in all the 28 police districts simultaneously, followed by cordon and search operations (CASOs) at all the vulnerable spots.
Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said that police teams led by CPs/SSPs conducted flag marches in the sensitive and vulnerable areas of their respective districts.
'The exercise was aimed to boost the confidence of the general public, besides preparing police personnel to tackle any untoward situation,' he said.
Shukla said that the CPs/SSPs were also directed to conduct a special cordon and search operation (CASO) under the supervision of a SP-rank officer at all the crowded places, including railway stations, bus stands, markets, shopping malls, public parks, etc, across the state.
'We had strictly instructed all the Police personnel to deal with every person in a friendly and polite manner while frisking them during the course of this operation,' he added.
He said that around 250 teams, involving over 1,500 police personnel, were deputed across the state to look for suspicious persons in the state, while ensuring minimum inconvenience to the general public.
Apart from this, cops have continued their cordon and search operation (CASO) against drugs on Day 165, and conducted raids at 374 locations on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of 73 drug smugglers after registration of 53 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. With this, the total number of drug smugglers arrested has reached 25,719 within 165 days.
The Special DGP said that the raids have resulted in the recovery of 2.4 kg of heroin and ₹42,800 drug money from the possession of arrested drug smugglers.

Bhubaneswar: OdishaChief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday said he has given 'absolute power' to the police to take action against those involved in crimes against women. Addressing the Independence Day function at Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar, Majhi said his government will not hesitate to bring a special legislation to 'completely end' organised crimes. From the function, the Chief Minister also announced an additional 5 kg of rice will be provided to the poor people in 11 districts for three months. 'People who are involved in crimes against women have no place in society, they must be in jail. Therefore, I have given absolute power to the police to take necessary actions in such cases,' he said. Majhi said nobody, how influential he may be, will be spared if he is involved in crimes against women. The statement came as the State reported a slew of crimes against women, with the Opposition raising questions on the law and order situation. 'The law and order situation of the State is more or less under control. However, we have to strengthen and make it more effective,' he said. Noting that intoxication was one of the major factors behind the rise in crimes, Majhi said he has directed the police to against such activities. 'The government will take all measures to firmly control 'goondaraj'. The process of identification of criminals has already started,' he said. 'In order to completely end organised crimes, the State government will not hesitate to bring special legislation. Extortion and other such activities are completely illegal and those will be considered as organised crimes and dealt with firmly,' he said. Majhi said his government was committed to making colleges and universities safe for women by implementing initiatives like 'Shaktishree'. He maintained that women's empowerment is not just a slogan for his government. 'We have provided financial assistance to over 1 crore women through 'Subhadra Yojana'. Women have been able to become small entrepreneurs by utilising the assistance. The State has so far produced 17 lakh 'lakhpati didis',' he said. The Chief Minister said the State's commitment to women's empowerment is evident from the 2025-26 annual budget, in which allocations of Rs 89,861 crore have been made for schemes in regard to this. Listing the social welfare measures undertaken by his government, Majhi announced that 27 lakh poor families, who are beneficiaries of the 'Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana', in 11 districts will be given 5 kg additional rice per month for three months free of cost.

On I-Day, around 1500 convicts granted special remission at Tihar Jail
On the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, special remission in a range of 15 to 25 days, was granted to 1497 convicts at the Tihar Jail. During the Independence Day celebration at Tihar prison, Director General (Prisons) Satish Golchha, said that a total of 1,497 inmates were eligible for special remission ranging from 15 to 25 days based on their conduct during their time in the prison. In an effort to tackle overcrowding in the Capital's prisons, DG Golchha announced that a new jail will be built in Narela with Rs 145.58 crore sanctioned by the Delhi government. Golchha said that around 600 inmates are being provided training in Unnati Cognitive Behavioural Programme of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in collaboration with Osmania University, while several other organisations are contributing to vocational training across jails. DG Golchha further said that over 3,200 vacant posts in Tihar Jail have been filled after Jail Cadre staff were promoted. '1,697 warden and 93 assistant superintendent posts have been newly advertised to strengthen manpower,' the DG said. The DG also informed that the department had recently taken over the operation of the Lampur Detention Centre.
