The Vatican did not say how long the meeting between Pope Leo and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lasted.
– Pope Leo told visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 8 that the Vatican is willing to host Russia-Ukraine peace talks, the Vatican said in a statement.
The Pope, meeting the Ukrainian leader for the second time in his two-month-old papacy, also discussed with Mr Zelensky 'the urgent need for a just and lasting peace', the statement said.
Mr Zelensky and Pope Leo held talks in Castel Gandolfo, a small Italian hill town not far from Rome, where the Pope is taking a two-week vacation.
The Ukrainian leader is in Italy to attend a conference on July 10 to 11 dedicated to Ukraine's recovery and long-term reconstruction following Russia's invasion.
The Vatican did not say how long the meeting between Pope Leo and Mr Zelensky lasted. It released a video showing Pope Leo, the first US pontiff, asking Mr Zelensky, 'How are things going?' in English as the two sat in a large room together.
Pope Leo, who has made
appealing for peace in world conflicts a major theme of his young papacy, previously met Mr Zelensky at the Vatican on May 18.
The Pope also held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 4, during which the Vatican said he had asked Mr Putin to take concrete steps to end Russia's bloody three-year war on Ukraine.

Some rebel groups in northeastern India have ethnic, linguistic and cultural ties with minorities across the border in Myanmar and maintain a presence there. A top commander of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was killed and 19 others wounded in a drone attack in Myanmar near the border, the separatist group said in a series of statements. 'Two more senior commanders were killed' in subsequent strikes, the ULFA said, adding: 'Several other members and civilians were also wounded.' Indian authorities have yet to confirm the strikes. Camps belonging to another rebel group, the People's Liberation Army, were also targeted, the ULFA added. The ULFA is one of several insurgent groups in India, and wants independence for the northeastern state of Assam, while the PLA advocates for the secession of Manipur state. Top stories Swipe. Indonesia foils attempt to smuggle 1,200 endangered birds

The popular cage-bird is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and a protected species by the Indonesian environment and forestry ministry. Officials found the huge cache of birds in eight cages on July 11, including 140 that died, at a port on Flores island in eastern Indonesia, Mr Joko Waluyo, an official at a provincial conservation agency, told reporters Sunday. The birds were due to be taken by ferry to Surabaya, a city in the east of Indonesia's main island Java. 'The alleged perpetrator, who has not yet been found, brought Javan white-eye birds in 8 bird cages. The number of birds that were attempted to be transported was 1,260, 140 of which were found dead,' said Mr Joko. The surviving white-eye birds were released back into the wild. 'The release aims to save all secured (birds), increase the population in nature, and raise public awareness,' he said. Under Indonesian law, poaching or trading of protected species is punishable up to 15 years in prison. Indonesia's illegal trade in wildlife along with habitat loss has driven numerous endangered species, from the Sumatran elephant to the orangutan, to the brink of extinction. AFP

They can decide to persist in efforts to reach a trade deal with the United States. Or they could respond to US President Donald Trump's latest threats to impose massive tariffs on European exports by imposing their own punitive tariffs against American products.
