Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, unveiled an ambitious national security initiative titled 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra', aimed at protecting India's critical establishments over the next decade through indigenous technological development within the coming ten years.
"Every citizen must feel protected," PM Modi said.
"This mission will be research-based and developed entirely with indigenous technology," PM Modi declared, emphasising self-reliance in strategic innovation.
The initiative is expected to encompass a multi-layered security framework, integrating advanced surveillance, cyber protection, and physical infrastructure safeguards tailored to India's evolving threat landscape.
Drawing inspiration from the Mahabharata, PM Modi invoked the moment when Lord Krishna shielded the sun to enable Arjun to defeat Jayadrath. "We are taking inspiration from Lord Krishna, who once barred sunlight from reaching Earth. That divine intervention changed the course of battle. Today, we must similarly shield our vital institutions from emerging threats," he said, blending mythology with modern strategic vision.
Though specific details of Mission Sudarshan Chakra remain under wraps, sources suggest it will involve collaboration between India's premier research agencies, defence establishments, and private innovators.
The mission aligns with the government's broader push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), especially in defence and critical infrastructure.
The announcement comes amid heightened global concerns over cyber warfare, hybrid threats, and sabotage of strategic assets.
PM Modi's emphasis on indigenous technology signals a move away from dependency on foreign systems, reinforcing national sovereignty in security architecture.
The Prime Minister's speech also touched on India's historical vulnerabilities, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks, underscoring the need for proactive and integrated security planning.
"We cannot afford to be reactive. We must anticipate and prepare," he said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will begin his two-day visit to India on Monday, where he will hold a crucial bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar. However, the Chinese Foreign Minister's visit also assumes significance in view of increasing tensions in India-US relations following President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, which included an additional penalty of 25 per cent for purchasing Russian oil. India and China are expected to discuss new confidence-building measures for durable peace and tranquillity along their contested border during Wang Yi's visit, which comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's China trip later this month. The Chinese Foreign Minister's visit is largely seen as part of ongoing efforts by the two neighbours to rebuild their relationship after it came under severe strain following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. Wang Yi will be in India primarily to hold a fresh round of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Wang and Doval are the designated special representatives for the boundary talks. The Chinese Foreign Minister will arrive in New Delhi at around 4:15 p.m. on Monday. At 6 p.m., he will meet EAM Jaishankar for bilateral discussions. On Tuesday morning, Wang Yi is scheduled to hold a new round of the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue with NSA Doval at 11 a.m. The meetings could see both sides deliberate on a range of key issues, including the border situation, trade and resumption of flight services. The Chinese Minister will then call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The meeting assumes significance as it is taking place days before PM Modi's planned trip to China to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Though the two sides disengaged troops from the friction points, they are yet to de-escalate the situation by pulling back the frontline forces from the border. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh region. As per the plan, Prime Minister Modi will visit Japan around August 29 and then travel to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin for the SCO summit. NSA Doval travelled to China in December last year and held the SR talks with Wang Yi, weeks after Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to revive various dialogue mechanisms between the two sides at a meeting in the Russian city of Kazan. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and the clashes at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in bilateral ties. The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi in Kazan on October 23, 2024. The two sides also initiated several initiatives to rebuild ties, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and New Delhi restarting the issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals. Both sides are also discussing modalities to resume direct flight services between the two countries. The flight services between the two sides were suspended following the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. It was not restored in view of the border row. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and EAM Jaishankar visited China in the last two months to attend the SCO meetings.

DGTR recommends three-year safeguard duty on flat steel imports
Advt Industry and stakeholder response By , ETInfra The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), under the Ministry of Commerce, has recommended the final imposition of a safeguard duty on imports of certain flat steel products for three years to protect domestic producers from a rise in to PTI, in its final findings DGTR said there had been 'a recent, sudden, sharp and significant increase in imports' of the product under consideration, which threatened to cause serious injury to the domestic industry. The authority has proposed a safeguard duty of 12 per cent in the first year, 11.5 per cent in the second, and 11 per cent in the recommendation follows a probe initiated on a complaint filed by the Indian Steel Association (ISA) on behalf of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Jindal Steel and Power and the Steel Authority of India. Based on preliminary findings, the government had in April imposed a provisional 12 per cent safeguard duty for 200 ISA said the duty would support domestic producers. Its president Naveen Jindal stated, 'While the proposed 12 per cent duty may not fully reflect the geopolitical context where 25 per cent is often considered the norm, it demonstrates clear government support for using such measures to promote Aatmanirbhar Bharat in steel.' He added that the proposal to introduce a minimum import price, below which the duty would be triggered, was a positive step to protect downstream think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) criticised the decision, saying the duties would increase input costs and affect export competitiveness. Its founder, Ajay Srivastava, said the imports were predictable, not sudden; domestic injury was overstated; and duties would cripple auto, engineering and construction probe launched in December 2024 covered hot-rolled and cold-rolled products as well as metallic and colour-coated steel. According to GTRI, Chinese exports of these items rose to 110.7 million tonnes in 2024, up 25 per cent from 2023, with a large share redirected to India.

Several states are requesting a "significant share" in the supplementary taxation on tobacco items to offset immediate revenue reductions, according to Economic Times sources familiar with ongoing discussions regarding sin goods taxation, particularly tobacco. "During the discussion some states asked for equal share on the additional duty to be imposed," disclosed one source anonymously. The rate rationalisation ministerial group, led by Bihar's deputy chief minister Samrat Chaudhary, is likely to convene once more before the upcoming GST Council meeting to address this matter, with states anticipating next-generation GST reforms. The GST Council will take the ultimate decision on this issue. Presently, tobacco and related products, including cigarette, cigars, pan masala, cigarillos and hookah, face 28% GST plus compensation cess, central excise duty and national calamity contingent duty, totalling 53% indirect tax. "A few states suggested that either it should be a basic excise duty, divisible between the Centre and states, or a central excise duty along with state excise duty - which would be a win-win for both, giving headroom to states to generate their revenue," revealed a source involved in discussions. Kerala has formally requested compensation for revenue losses from GST reforms. "The so-called simplification of GST rates announced by Modi will be devastating for state revenues," Kerala finance minister Thomas Issac said in a post on X. "The GST rates that have already been rendered below revenue neutral rate by 2018 pre-election simplification, will now shrink further. States must be compensated for the loss." India's tobacco products remain globally amongst the most affordable, according to parliamentary standing committee's 139th report. The report indicated substantial scope for increased taxation, recommending 40% peak rate and significant excise duty increases.
