SNL fans praise ‘genius' cameo during Timothée Chalamet performance

Saturday Night Live fans were stunned to see Adam Sandler make a surprise appearance on Saturday's episode (25 January), returning to his roots on the show.
Sandler, 58, was a cast member on SNL between 1990 and 1995 and has made numerous cameos since then.
His most recent return saw him introduce a musical performance by host Timothée Chalamet, who sang the Bob Dylan songs Outlaw Blues and Three Angels, fresh off his Oscar nomination for the Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Sandler's brief appearance also played off a gag from this year's Golden Globes, when host Nikki Glaser asked him to deliver an exaggerated pronunciation of Chalamet.
Repeating the joke on SNL, Sandler bellowed: 'Ladies and gentlemen, I love him too, Timothée Chalameeeet!'
Viewers were quick to sing the praises of the cameo, with one writing: 'Getting Sandler to announce Timmy so he could say 'Chalamet' is genius.'
'Playing the long game on the Golden Globes joke,' noted a second fan.
'I just saw Adam Sandler introducing Timmy on SNL. I thought I was hallucinating. The universe is healing,' added a third.
A fourth said: 'OH MY WOW! They actually brought Adam Sandler out to give us another! 'Ahhhh Timothée Chalamet !'
'Sandler must've had a police escort to get from the Garden to NBC so fast! Just so he could intro Chalamet,' joked a fifth viewer, referencing the fact that the Uncut Gems actor is a big basketball fan.
Chalamet, who made history with his Oscar nomination, becoming the first man since James Dean to secure two Oscar nods for Best Actor before turning 30, was also praised for his performance.
'I love Timmy. He really puts his best in everything,' said one fan.
'The second song was so emotional. Anyone else out there shed a tear?' asked another.
A third added: 'Need to go to a Timothée Bob Chalamet concert ASAP.'
Eagle-eyed viewers also spotted British singer-songwriter James Blake playing the keyboard in Chalamet's band.
'I love that James Blake is part of this! That guy is such an immense talent,' wrote a fan.
A second said: 'OK Timothée, I see you singing Bob Dylan with freaking James Blake playing piano and doing backing vocals.'

Savannah Guthrie's stark response after interviewer asked bold question about her looks divides internet

Savannah Guthrie said she didn't know what veneers were after a reporter boldly asked whether she had them during an uncomfortable appearance on a red carpet. The 53-year-old NBC Today host had been out celebrating the launch of her former colleague Hoda Kotb 's new wellness brand, Joy 101, at Current at Chelsea Piers last month when she was bizarrely asked about her teeth. During a toe-curling interview with Parade Magazine, Guthrie seemed to be playing a game on the red carpet where she blindly chose questions that were written on folded pieces of paper to answer. But when one contained an inquiry about her appearance, things turned awkward, eventually leading to Guthrie walking away abruptly. A video of the tense moment has since gone viral on TikTok, dividing the internet. In the clip, Guthrie read the question aloud, which said: 'Do you have veneers?' 'What is that, like braces?' Guthrie responded, appearing dumbfounded. 'The teeth,' the reporter helped. 'Well, I did Invisalign,' Guthrie replied. 'Is that what that means? What are veneers?' The reporter quipped: 'You would know if you had it.' 'OK, I guess no,' Guthrie continued. 'No, I don't have veneers. I probably need them, whatever they are.' 'No, your teeth are perfect,' the reporter observed. Guthrie quickly ended the interview after that, telling the journalist: 'I'm going to get veneers. I gotta go, getting veneers.' Viewers were split over the bizarre question, as well as Guthrie's response - with some doubting Guthrie's lack of knowledge about veneers. Others criticized the interviewer for daring to ask such a personal inquiry, which they deemed as rude. Taking to the comments, one said: 'Why are people so rude to Savannah? OMG just let her be human, it's literally not hard to be nice!' Another wrote: 'She's a journalist and doesn't know what veneers are?' 'She knows what they are, give me a break,' a third penned. 'Oh come on,' added a fourth. In dentistry, a veneer is a layer of material placed over a tooth. Veneers can improve the aesthetics and function of a smile and protect the tooth's surface from damage. While Guthrie hasn't had veneers, she has had treatment for her vision three times. In 2021, she underwent her last surgery to re-attach her retina after her son threw a toy train at her eye two years prior. Speaking to People at the time, she said: 'My eye is good. The short answer is that it's good, and I think I've had my last surgery. I really do. 'And I'm seeing well, and I just actually got a prescription for eyeglasses, which I haven't been able to wear [yet]. So, I'm super excited to wear glasses. 'And I kind of can't believe that this all took so long, but honestly since the surgery I had last summer after the pandemic, my eyesight's been dramatically better.' She previously underwent surgery to re-attach the retina in her eye in November 2019, shortly after the accident left her with blurry vision. But the surgery didn't fix Guthrie's sight issues and and she had developed cataracts by July 2020. In April 2021, she sought medical attention again. Guthrie shares daughter Vale, 10, and son Charley, eight, with husband Michael Feldman.

Netflix fans left 'ugly crying' by 'absolutely heartbreaking' thriller so intense they 'had to take a break' halfway through

A Netflix tear-jerker has left fans so emotional they had to pause the film to regain their composure. 'Movies don't make you cry like this these days,' wrote one viewer online, after watching brand new heart-tugging Netflix film, 'Straw'. From the mind of Tyler Perry (writer, producer and director), Straw sends viewers spiralling through a tempestuous day in the life of 'Janiyah' (Taraji P. Henson) as she faces adversity and struggles to make ends meet for her unwell young daughter. The cerebral tale has been praised for its unexpected twist ending, and exploration of prejudice in the healthcare and banking systems, as well its call for discussion around mental health in Black communities. 'She's just trying to survive, just trying to be a great mother to her daughter, and then the circumstances in her life cause her to be in this situation,' Perry told Netflix's Tudum. 'I think that a lot of people around the world, no matter if you're a Black woman or not, will be able to relate to that feeling of, 'I'm at my last straw.'' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. After being released on June 6, Straw has rapidly ascended the Netflix charts, now hitting no.1 movie in the UK, and audiences online are bubbling over with emotion at the psychological thriller. 'I just finished watching #StrawNetflix I cried, crode and I crewwweedddd. Taraji's pain and trauma were just too much...' 'The way Straw raises awareness on psychosis , and the different stages of grief! Beautifully done! #StrawNetflix' 'Taraji P. Henson is one of THE BEST actresses ever. #StrawNetflix was simply incredible and she deserves an Oscar. 'The emotion I felt watching this was insane. I cried from start to finish. Single moms. We are incredibly strong.' 'This is a tear jerker. The ugly cry I did is unmatched.' 'I give this a 9/10. This movie triggers you emotionally in the most least expected way. Prepare to cry.' Straw marks Henson and Perry's fourth collaboration in the cinema world, having previously worked together on Acrimony, I Can Do Bad All by Myself, and The Family That Preys. In Straw, Henson is joined by a stellar cast, featuring Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor and Jingle All the Way star Sinbad, in his first role since suffering a stroke in 2020. Despite an emotive response on social media, some film reviewers were critical, suggesting that Taraji P. Henson's tear-jerking performance elevated the film, whilst the writing and plot were subpar, and unsurprising from Perry. Though critics reviews were mixed, the film received a 76% audience review on Rotten Tomatoes. Henson expressed in an interview with Extra that she anticipated a stirring response from audiences. 'You never know what cross someone is carrying,' she noted, explaining that she hoped the film would invoke an impetus to show kindness towards strangers in the audience.

The Power of the Dog is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer for free, as well as Netflix.
