Chennai: AIADMK general secretary and Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday expressed shock over the explosion of what he described as a 'country-made bomb' allegedly brought in by students of the Government Polytechnic College in Thoothukudi. He accused the DMK regime of presiding over a deteriorating law and order situation and urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to 'step out of his denial zone' and respond to questions on public safety. The incident occurred on Tuesday during the lunch break when two first-year Diploma (Mechanical) students -- M. Mathavan (16) of P&T Colony and M. Murali Karthick (16) of Indra Nagar, Thoothukudi -- allegedly set off firecrackers inside their classroom. According to sources, the crackers were of the type used for fishing in ponds. Mathavan sustained severe injuries to his right hand, while Murali suffered injuries to his right eye. Both were admitted to the Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital. While Palaniswami alleged that the blast involved a 'country-made bomb' and reflected a collapse in campus security, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Albert John clarified that the explosion was caused only by firecrackers. He appealed to the public not to spread false or misleading information about the incident. In a strongly worded social media statement, the AIADMK leader drew parallels with recent violent incidents involving students. 'From knife fights among school children to machetes in school bags, and now a bomb explosion in a government college -- this is the grim reality in Tamil Nadu today,' he said. He contrasted the present situation with what he called the 'educationally progressive' image of the state under the previous AIADMK regime, claiming it was now 'drifting under the so-called Stalin-model governance.' Palaniswami criticised what he alleged was the DMK government's tendency to downplay such incidents as 'personal issues' and called it shameful. 'The presence of deadly weapons in an educational institution reflects a collapse in governance. Why is there hesitation when questions come from the people?' he asked, accusing the Chief Minister of remaining silent when confronted with uncomfortable queries on law and order. The AIADMK leader demanded that the state provide immediate medical care for the injured students and conduct a thorough probe into the blast. He also called for stringent legal action against those responsible and measures to prevent such incidents in the future. A woman PhD scholar, Jean Joseph, Wednesday refused to receive her degree from the Tamil Nadu Governor at the 32nd convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in Tirunelveli, stating that R N Ravi is 'against Tamil Nadu and Tamils'. In a video, which has now gone viral, Joseph is seen walking past the Governor even as he smilingly gestures to her to stand next to him to receive the degree. Joseph walks past him and gets her degree from the Vice Chancellor of the varsity, M Chandrasekar. Speaking to The Indian Express, the 38-year-old said: 'I did not want to get my degree from a person who does not respect either Tamil Nadu or Tamil culture. The Governor does not respect Tamil people, and hence I decided not to get my degree from him.' Joseph is also the spouse of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M Rajan. 'But my decision not to accept the degree from the Governor came from my own conviction. My husband's politics had nothing to do with it,' she said. Joseph said that she had been contemplating this for the past two days. 'I received the convocation invitation two days ago, and since then, I have been thinking about it. I also wondered whether my action could cause trouble for other candidates at the convocation,' she said. 'I decided to go for it at the last moment because I just couldn't get myself to accept the degree from him.' 'I know several young people who want to be doctors and want an exemption from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The governor sat on that Bill for long, and even now Tamil students are not exempted from NEET,' she said. Ravi had refused to give his assent to several Bills passed by the state's Legislative Assembly. The Supreme Court had, in April, declared as illegal and erroneous his actions in reserving 10 Bills for consideration of the President in November 2024, after they had already been reconsidered by the state Assembly. ED raids against Rohtas Projects for ₹248-crore 'fraud' with home buyers
NEW DELHI | LUCKNOW: The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday conducted searches against an Uttar Pradesh-based realty group as part of a money laundering probe against it for allegedly duping investors to the tune of Rs 248 crore, official sources said. At least eight premises in Lucknow and two in Delhi are being searched in the case against Rohtas Projects Ltd., the sources said. The action is being carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act ( PMLA ), they said. The money laundering case stems from as many as 87 FIRs filed by home/commercial space buyers since 2021 alleging they were duped and not given their properties. As per a forensic audit conducted by the UP RERA (Uttar Pradesh Real Estate Regulatory Authority), the "proceeds of crime" in this case is Rs 248 crore, the sources said. The searches are being conducted with an aim to find evidence and the assets of the promoters for attachment as they are "absconding" since the last four years, the sources claimed. The promoters of the company have been identified as Piyush Rastogi , Paresh Rastogi and Deepak Rastogi. The promoters or their legal representatives could not be contacted immediately for a comment on the ED action against them.
