Thoothukudi college blast: Palaniswami blames DMK govt, demands CM's response
He accused the DMK regime of presiding over a deteriorating law and order situation and urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to 'step out of his denial zone' and respond to questions on public safety.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during the lunch break when two first-year Diploma (Mechanical) students -- M. Mathavan (16) of P&T Colony and M. Murali Karthick (16) of Indra Nagar, Thoothukudi -- allegedly set off firecrackers inside their classroom.
According to sources, the crackers were of the type used for fishing in ponds. Mathavan sustained severe injuries to his right hand, while Murali suffered injuries to his right eye. Both were admitted to the Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital.
While Palaniswami alleged that the blast involved a 'country-made bomb' and reflected a collapse in campus security, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Albert John clarified that the explosion was caused only by firecrackers.
He appealed to the public not to spread false or misleading information about the incident.
In a strongly worded social media statement, the AIADMK leader drew parallels with recent violent incidents involving students.
'From knife fights among school children to machetes in school bags, and now a bomb explosion in a government college -- this is the grim reality in Tamil Nadu today,' he said.
He contrasted the present situation with what he called the 'educationally progressive' image of the state under the previous AIADMK regime, claiming it was now 'drifting under the so-called Stalin-model governance.'
Palaniswami criticised what he alleged was the DMK government's tendency to downplay such incidents as 'personal issues' and called it shameful.
'The presence of deadly weapons in an educational institution reflects a collapse in governance. Why is there hesitation when questions come from the people?' he asked, accusing the Chief Minister of remaining silent when confronted with uncomfortable queries on law and order.
The AIADMK leader demanded that the state provide immediate medical care for the injured students and conduct a thorough probe into the blast.
He also called for stringent legal action against those responsible and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
'It is time to reclaim the state from a regime that has allowed weapons and explosives to enter our institutions,' Palaniswami said, warning that public confidence in the government's ability to maintain safety was rapidly eroding.

False propaganda is being spread branding AIADMK as anti-minorities, says EPS
Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday alleged that a false propaganda was being spread among minorities that the AIADMK had always acted against their welfare. Addressing a public gathering in Vellore as part of his State-wide tour, Mr. Palaniswami said minorities were being made to believe that they would be unsafe under an AIADMK regime. 'This is not true. During its 31 years of [cumulative] rule since the days of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, the AIADMK has always protected the interest of minorities and marginalised sections of society. They [minorities] should not believe the false propaganda,' he said. Mr. Palaniswami listed several welfare measures taken by him and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the welfare of minorities. Under the Jayalalithaa regime, an initiative to distribute free rice to mosques for making nombu kanji (gruel) during the month of Ramzan was launched in 2011, with an allocation of 5,400 tonnes, he said. 'When the Centre stopped extending the grant of ₹6 crore for Haj pilgrims from Tamil Nadu in 2018, the then AIADMK government led by me provided the grant, and even increased it to ₹12 crore in 2021. A permanent accommodation for Haj pilgrims was built in Chennai at a cost of ₹15 crore during AIADMK rule,' he said. In 2015, the then Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, secured around 2.4 lakh crore in foreign direct investment, and signed 98 agreements with multinational companies (MNCs) to provide job opportunities for unemployed educated youth in the State, he said. 'Following in her footsteps, a global investors' meet was organised in Chennai when I was Chief Minister in 2019. I signed 304 agreements with MNCs to get them to set up units and provide jobs in the State. The fruits of our labour are being reaped by the ruling DMK as the youth are getting jobs in these MNCs,' he added.

Governor's statement exposes ‘insult' faced by him during convocation: K.N. Nehru
Municipal Administration and Water Supplies Minister K.N. Nehru on Thursday alleged that Governor R.N. Ravi was functioning like an agent of Nagpur (the headquarters of the RSS), instead of discharging his duties as the Governor of a State. Mr. Nehru said the Governor's customary speech on the eve of Independence Day clearly exposed the 'insult' he had faced during the convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, where a student refused to receive her PhD certificate from him. 'The Governor, without any political decency, had used his Independence Day message to level allegations against the government,' he said. 'The fascist BJP regime at the Centre has sent poisonous snakes in the name of Governors to States ruled by parties other than the BJP. Mr. Ravi sought to create a lot of problems for the democratically elected government, and we crushed his designs through the Supreme Court,' he said. Mr. Nehru said Union Home Minister Amit Shah would 'laugh' at Mr. Ravi's claim that the Union government had allocated lakhs of crores of rupees to Tamil Nadu, as the Union Budget did not even have a reference to the State. 'Tamil Nadu's economy has become very strong, and has achieved 11.19% growth after a gap of 10 years under the DMK-led government. He [Governor] is desperate because the DMK's alliance partners have announced their decision to boycott the tea party hosted by him on the occasion of Independence Day,' Mr. Nehru claimed. He added that the per capita income in Tamil Nadu was the highest in the country, and that the State had succeeded in creating more women entrepreneurs and start-ups.
