False propaganda is being spread branding AIADMK as anti-minorities, says EPS
Addressing a public gathering in Vellore as part of his State-wide tour, Mr. Palaniswami said minorities were being made to believe that they would be unsafe under an AIADMK regime. 'This is not true. During its 31 years of [cumulative] rule since the days of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, the AIADMK has always protected the interest of minorities and marginalised sections of society. They [minorities] should not believe the false propaganda,' he said.
Mr. Palaniswami listed several welfare measures taken by him and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the welfare of minorities. Under the Jayalalithaa regime, an initiative to distribute free rice to mosques for making nombu kanji (gruel) during the month of Ramzan was launched in 2011, with an allocation of 5,400 tonnes, he said. 'When the Centre stopped extending the grant of ₹6 crore for Haj pilgrims from Tamil Nadu in 2018, the then AIADMK government led by me provided the grant, and even increased it to ₹12 crore in 2021. A permanent accommodation for Haj pilgrims was built in Chennai at a cost of ₹15 crore during AIADMK rule,' he said.
In 2015, the then Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, secured around 2.4 lakh crore in foreign direct investment, and signed 98 agreements with multinational companies (MNCs) to provide job opportunities for unemployed educated youth in the State, he said.
'Following in her footsteps, a global investors' meet was organised in Chennai when I was Chief Minister in 2019. I signed 304 agreements with MNCs to get them to set up units and provide jobs in the State. The fruits of our labour are being reaped by the ruling DMK as the youth are getting jobs in these MNCs,' he added.

"Public education in TN is in steady decline," he said. Students are merely passing with certificates, and without job opportunities, he said. Alleging that social and educational discrimination was on the rise, Ravi said dalits are physically assaulted and at times even killed for their attempt to share the common public space. "It is a matter of collective shame that even after 78 years of Independence, rampant humiliating social discrimination practices are prevalent in our state," he said. Ravi said according to national crime records bureau, about 20,000 suicides are reported from TN every year, more than double the national average. The suicides reflect the prevailing acute social, psychological, or economic distress in the society, he said. Ravi alleged that drug abuse, especially among youth, was sharply increasing, particularly synthetic drugs. He also alleged that there was a sharp increase in the incidents of sexual offences, especially Pocso cases. Rejecting Ravi's charges, municipal administration minister K N Nehru said data released by Union govt shows TN was ahead in social and economic parameters. He said TN govt has responded to these charges with data in the past. "The governor is lying, frustrated over the boycott of his Independence day tea party by DMK allies," he said. Nehru also dismissed the statement that Centre has been supporting the development of TN by providing 'substantial funding', which included 3lakh crore as grants-in-aid. "The last Union budget had no mention of TN," he said. School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said if Ravi was concerned about education of children in TN, he should urge Union govt to release pending funds for school education department.

Freedom wouldn't have come without Bengal's contribution: Mamata Banerjee

Follow pre-posting procedures of DGP scrupulously: HC
Madurai: After the state govt informed that the process for appointment to the post of director general police (DGP) was ongoing, Madras high court on Thursday reiterated that pre-appointment procedures contemplated by Supreme Court, and the consequential orders of the Centre and Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) are to be scrupulously followed to maintain independence and transparency in the matter. A division bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice G Arul Murugan observed that empanelment of officers for appointment to the post is to be strictly done in consonance with the above directives. It was brought to the court's notice that a petition filed before the principal seat in Chennai seeking a similar prayer was dismissed as premature by the coordinate bench by an order dated Aug 4. "We concur with the said view taken by the coordinate bench at the principal seat in view of the fact that the appointment to the post of DGP is yet to be made," the judges observed. In view of the state's submission that the process for appointment to the post is ongoing, the judges said no further interference is required in the petition at this juncture, and disposed of the public interest litigation filed by advocate K Yasar Arafath of Ramanathapuram district. The petitioner stated that the present DGP, Shankar Jiwal, is set to retire on Aug 31.
