Rebel's Romance delivers epic Royal Ascot redemption in Appleby's last roll of the dice

Khaleej Times21-06-2025
They say good things come to those who wait, and for Charlie Appleby, that truth rang louder than ever at Royal Ascot on Saturday.
After three years of near-misses and simmering disappointment Godolphin handler Charlie Appleby finally returned to the Royal Ascot winner's enclosure on the final day, thanks to the stable's globetrotting superstar, Rebel's Romance.
In a moment dripping with drama and relief, Appleby's last roll of the dice became a royal flush. The master of Moulton Paddocks struck gold in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes, an elite middle-distance test run over 2400m, and a fitting finale to a week of drama.
This was Appleby's first winner at the Royal meeting since Naval Crown landed the Platinum Jubilee Stakes in 2022. After watching 11 runners fall short throughout the week, it was his 12th and final shot, and a magical horse to deliver it.
Rebel's Romance, already a living legend in blue silks with seven Group 1 victories, confirmed his status as one of the finest ever to represent Godolphin, producing a powerful performance under William Buick to leave rivals trailing. It was the cherry on top of an already glittering career, and perhaps his most meaningful win yet.
The seven-year-old gelded son of Godolphin's prized stallion, Dubawi, surged clear two furlongs from home, igniting a roar from the fans as he hit the front. Irish raider Al Riffa tried to close the gap under a strong ride from Dylan McMonagle, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Rebel's Romance cemented his legacy as a Godolphin great and gave his team a moment they'll never forget.
'We had one more roll of the dice - and what a partner,' said a visibly emotional Buick after the race. 'He's a dream horse, and any jockey that is fortunate in their career to have a horse like Rebel's Romance is blessed, and I'm blessed.'
'He travels the world, he's recognised everywhere, he's won more than £10 million in prize money and he's a top-class racehorse. You don't find many with a will to win like he has. I always say he finds a way. He's my best friend.'
Speaking to Sky Sports Racing, Appleby didn't hold back in his praise either.
'What more can I say about this horse?' said the Derby-winning handler. 'He's been a huge credit to the team back home. When it's your last roll of the dice, he's the horse you need. He's more than our Iron Horse - he's kept our yard afloat this week. He's our stable favourite and always will be.'
'He's a worldwide superstar. Full credit to the horse first and foremost, and to the team. It's been a tough week, but that's what you expect when you come here. It's the Olympics.'
And like the Olympics, triumph at Royal Ascot is often fleeting and often brutally difficult to grasp.
'You can come here fully loaded and walk away with excuses, that's racing,' added Appleby. 'I was taught from a young age to applaud every winner and enjoy your own. I know how hard it is just to get a horse here, let alone to win.'
And what a horse this is. Rebel's Romance has now amassed 13 Group wins, including seven at Group 1 level, across five countries: the USA, Germany, Hong Kong, the UAE and now the UK. His 18 career victories make him the most prolific horse in the royal blue silks, clear of Anamoe (14) and Lemon Pop (13).

Smith eager for Ashes after ‘outstanding' England-India series The Ashes, 2025/26

Steve Smith is raring to go against England in the home Ashes later this year. The charismatic Australia batter, who has the third-highest Test runs against England after Sir Don Bradman and Allan Border, opened up about the five-Test series in an interview with Sky Sports. Smith conceded that he was closely following the recently concluded England-India Test series, and that England's aggressive style of play is likely to produce an exciting contest Down Under. 'I watched a lot of the series against India and it was one of the best Test series I've seen in a long time. The cricket that was played by both teams was outstanding. 'England have a good side at the moment. They are obviously playing a really aggressive brand of cricket. 'I think coming down to Australia, particularly for their batters, it's going to be a big challenge. The wickets in the last three-four years have been really tricky. 'We've obviously got a very experienced bowling lineup with guys that have played over a long period of time and been extremely successful. I'm looking forward to it. I think it's going to be a great series.' Smith also weighed in on the achievements of England's Joe Root, who recently eclipsed the likes of Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest Test run-getter of all time. 'I think not just in that series (against India) but probably the last two years, he's been incredible. His ability to make big scores - to go from 50 to 100 - which was one thing he got caught in that spot for a while. 'Now he's just making that count and making huge scores. He hasn't scored a hundred in Australia. 'I think that's been talked about quite a lot. I'm sure that's something he wants to tick off his bucket list as well.' Root has been in staggering form with the bat for England since their last tour Down Under, having recently become the first batter to have notched 6000 runs in the ICC World Test Championship. When asked if Australia will be looking to resort to competitive banter to get the better of the England lynchpin, Smith said, 'I think the way we've played out cricket in the last few years is to just let our skills do the talking. 'We've played really good cricket in the last four years in Test cricket, making two World Test Championship Finals. 'So we're doing a lot of things right. For us, it's just letting our skills take over.' Another major tournament outing on the cards for Australia's seasoned campaigner is featuring in the LA28 Olympics. With cricket making a return to the Olympic Games for the first time in 128 years, Smith expanded on what it will mean to be a part of the landmark moment. 'I've watched a lot of Olympics since I was a young kid and I've really enjoyed watching the Australian athletes go about it. 'When I heard that cricket was going to be a part of it, I was like that would be really cool to be involved in. 'I've obviously played in lots of World Cups and Ashes and Border-Gavaskar Trophies and things like that, when this popped up, it was something new. 'A new opportunity to represent your country on the world stage. I'd love to be involved in that. But still a fair bit away, so we'll see.' Liverpool bolster defence with Leoni deal before Premier League opener

Liverpool manager Arne Slot continued to reinforce his squad on the eve of their Premier League season opener, confirming on Thursday that the club had agreed a deal to sign 18-year-old defender Giovanni Leoni from Parma. While no financial details were disclosed, British media reported the fee for the Serie A player at 26 million euros ($30.34 million). Slot's men kick off the defence of their title when they host Bournemouth on Friday on what is sure to be an emotional night at Anfield following the death of Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother in a car crash in July. Leoni is expected to have a medical later on Thursday and will immediately join the first team, with the club ruling out any possibility of a loan move. The teenager will join Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez -- who is a doubt for Friday having recently returned from an Achilles injury -- among Slot's centre-back options and shore up a back line that showed frailties during pre-season. "There are reasons for it," Slot said, citing injuries, mixed lineups, and the integration of new players. "The standard here is 10/10, we are doing everything well but 'well' is not good enough. We have to go a step up. "Come (Friday) evening against Bournemouth, there are no excuses." Slot is cautiously optimistic Liverpool can retain their title. "The main reason that it's so difficult is because there are so many competitors who can win the league. It's unbelievable if you are able to do it in this league," the Dutchman said. "This year will be even harder than before. Every season and pre-season has its challenges. We have lost many starters. "It's not always yourself but the teams you face. We've lost five to six players who played quite a lot of minutes last season, and brought in four, so it's normal there's adaptation." Liverpool have a tough start to the campaign, with games away to Newcastle United and at home to last season's runners-up Arsenal among their first three fixtures. "We start with Bournemouth, probably the most intense team in the league last season, in running and playing style," Slot said. There is plenty of anticipation around Liverpool's new attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz after the Reds shattered their transfer record to sign the 22-year-old German international from Bayer Leverkusen in June. They paid 100 million pounds ($135.66 million), with a further maximum of 16 million in potential bonuses. Slot was full of praise for Wirtz, but cautioned he might need time to adjust to the intensity of England's top tier. "Good players always find a way of playing in a good team - he is a good player and he plays in a good team," Slot said. "Factually we can see him as a young player, but I don't see him as one. He won the cup and league in Germany (in 2024), and his mentality is his biggest strength. "That says a lot, because when you see him play he is so creative. He is mentally strong, he doesn't get distracted by a transfer fee or anything else."
