Friends hold football tribute for UAE expat killed in UK to 'keep legacy alive'

The friends of a former UAE expat who died in the UK organised a friendly football match to honor his legacy. The Jefferson memorial cup pitched two teams of seven, some of who arrived in the country from abroad, against each other in a game that was fraught with tears, emotions and a joint sense of duty. 'Our friendship began on the court and Jefferson was an amazing player,' said Dinoop Suresh, one of the organisers of the event. 'We didn't want to just sit and cry about him. He would not have liked to see that. We wanted to do something to remember him and pay homage to what he represented to us. After the match, when his brother spoke, he said that it felt like Jefferson was watching over us and smiling.' It was in July that Jefferson Justin died in a motorcycle crash. The 27-year-old, who was scheduled to visit his family in the UAE this month, was trying to negotiate a turn when his bike crashed into a wall. Last week, several of his close friends and family gathered for his funeral in Sharjah. Dinoop said that the event was the brainchild of another one of their close friends Vishnu Venugopal, who arrived in the UAE from Spain after learning of Jefferson's demise. 'Since his death, all of us friends have been rallying around Jefferson's parents and supporting them in whatever way we could,' he said. 'We gather at their house every weekend to relive memories. That is how the discussion of such an event came about. We all pooled in money and decided to organise it.' The game The game, which took place on Friday evening at Dubai Sports World, had over 20 people, all of them Jefferson's friends, sign up to play. Almost 50 people turned up at the pitch to watch and support the family. Every jersey worn by the players had the name Jefferson printed on it. 'Many of them had not stepped on a pitch in several years,' said Dinoop. 'But when I distributed the flyers and posters, so many people came forward.' To make it feel more like a competition, Dinoop said that the friends assigned the role of managers of both teams to Jefferson's parents. 'They have been through a very trying time after his death,' he said. 'The pain of losing their son, coupled with the almost two weeks to get his body here and all the related documentation was very draining for them. We wanted to have a fun activity to cheer them up while celebrating Jefferson's spirit.' The group of friends plan to hold more such events in their dear friend's memory. 'His birth anniversary will fall on January 24,' Dinoop said. 'We want to do something at the time but we are not sure how many of us will be in town. We definitely want to keep doing things to keep his legacy alive.'

Haaland, Reijnders and Cherki star for Manchester City in memorable start to season

Manchester City began their Premier League campaign in memorable fashion as Erling Haaland struck twice in a crushing 4-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. New signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki also netted debut goals for Pep Guardiola's revamped team as they look to improve on last season's disappointing third-place finish. Haaland, who has scored in all four season-opening games during his spell in England's top flight, struck in the 34th minute when Reijnders chipped a ball through to Rico Lewis who sent in a low cross for the Norwegian to tap home. Reijnders scored three minutes later and Haaland completed his brace in the 61st minute when Oscar Bobb pulled the ball back for him to fire a low drive past Jose Sa. Cherki completed the rout after 81 minutes to cap an emphatic start to the season for City, who won the title four years in a row from 2021-24. It was a great day for City's new signings as Reijnders played a part in the first three goals. Coach Guardiola made Reijnders a priority signing from AC Milan after playmaker Kevin De Bruyne's departure. He also snapped up the technically gifted Cherki from Lyon, where he made his debut at the age of 16. Reijnders opened up the Wolves defence with a delightful flick to allow Lewis the space to pick out Haaland to score his first from a low cross in the 34th minute. Three minutes later, Bobb played Reijnders in down the left and the Netherlands midfielder arrowed a superb first-time shot into the bottom right corner from just inside the penalty area. City's third in the 61st came when Reijnders expertly took down a high ball, swapped passes with Bobb down the right and pulled the ball back for Haaland to finish with a crisp drive. Just six minutes after going on, France international Cherki flummoxed the Wolves defence and picked his spot from 20 metres out. While it may be premature to suggest City have found the ideal replacement for De Bruyne, it was a very promising showing from Reijnders. His presence brought dynamism to a City side that also raised eyebrows in other areas. Most notably, goalkeeper James Trafford was handed a debut and Ederson - described as "number one" by manager Guardiola this week despite speculation over his future - was missing from the squad altogether. The club, however, later confirmed the Brazilian's absence was due to illness, with the 31-year-old suffering from gastroenteritis. John Stones returned in defence for his first appearance since February and another new recruit, Rayan Ait-Nouri, featured against the club he left in the summer. It was an emotional occasion for Wolves as they paid a series of tributes before and during the game to Diogo Jota, their former striker who died last month following a car accident. Before facing City, Wolves fans displayed a giant tifo of Jota, who played two seasons in the Premier League with the West Midlands club before joining Liverpool in 2020. A banner under the tifo in his memory read 'We'll remember you when you walk in fields of gold,' and fans at Molineux Stadium chanted his name after a moment's applause was held while a Portuguese flag was flown.

Premier League: Haaland double as Man City start with big win over Wolves

Erling Haaland struck twice as Manchester City began their Premier League campaign with a crushing 4-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. New signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki netted debut goals for Pep Guardiola's revamped team in what they hope will be their first step towards improving on last season's disappointing third-place finish. Cherki completed the rout after 81 minutes to ice an emphatic start to the season for City, who won the title four years in a row from 2021-24. Richarlison scored twice to give Tottenham manager Thomas Frank a dream home debut with a 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday, while Sunderland shocked West Ham 3-0 on their return to the Premier League. Frank was seconds away from launching his era in charge with a trophy until a late Paris Saint-Germain revival won the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. The former Brentford boss replaced Ange Postecoglou despite the Australian ending Spurs' 17-year trophy drought by lifting the Europa League. However, Postecoglou was undone by a miserable return of six home league wins last season as Tottenham finished just above the relegation zone in 17th. Richarlison made the most of the faith shown in him by Frank as the Brazilian turned in Mohammed Kudus' cross to open the scoring. The pair combined again on the hour in more spectacular fashion as Richarlison's bicycle kick crashed in the Ghanaian's delivery from the right. Brennan Johnson was Tottenham's hero of the Europa League final with the only goal against Manchester United and he began the new season by racing clear to slot in the third. Burnley racked up 100 points in their Championship promotion campaign last season but did little to suggest they will buck the trend of sides being relegated straight back to the second tier. For the past two seasons, all three promoted teams have gone down. However, big-spending Sunderland enjoyed a dream return to the top-flight with a second-half demolition of West Ham. Former Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka is among pool of new signings attracted to the Stadium of Light. But it was three players key to their promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017 who scored. Eliezer Mayenda's looping header gave the Black Cats lift off on the hour mark. Centre-back Dan Ballard headed in the second before Wilson Isidor rounded off a huge win in stoppage time. Newcastle miss Isak Newcastle missed the unsettled Alexander Isak as they failed to find the breakthrough against 10-man Aston Villa in a 0-0 draw at Villa Park. The Magpies were the dominant side even before Ezri Konsa's red card for bringing down Antony Gordon 24 minutes from time. Isak had not been involved during Newcastle's pre-season as he appears determined to force through a move to Liverpool, who reportedly saw a £110 million ($149 million) offer for the Swedish striker rejected. The two clubs face off in their next league match at St. James' Park on August 25. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said he wants an end to the saga one way or another. "From my perspective, you want a resolution quickly. It's taking away the focus of the players and the supporters," said Howe "We want to be united together. We'd like a resolution, but we're not in control of that." Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz struck in the 96th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw at Brighton after Matt O'Riley's penalty put the Seagulls in front. Manchester City begin their campaign away to Wolves later on Saturday, hoping to bounce back into contenders for the title after a season to forget in 2024/25. Arsenal are not in action until Sunday when they travel to face a transformed Manchester United attack.
