The New York Mets are enduring a rough stretch in their season, but the roster should be talented enough to right the ship before playoff time.
Team owner Steve Cohen and president of baseball operations David Stearns worked diligently in the offseason to reload a team that reached the National League Championship Series last year with some reinforcement that can help them return.
Most notably, that included Juan Soto. But it also included a reunion with Pete Alonso, who returned to the team on a two-year deal with a player option after this season. And as it seems likely that Alonso will exercise that option and seek a longer-term contract moving forward, the Mets' latest scouting decision could mean they have a replacement in mind.
"Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns was in Japan on Tuesday to watch slugger Munetaka Murakami's game against the Yokohoma DeNA BayStars," Danny Abriano reported for SNY. "Murakami, a first baseman/third baseman for the Yakult Swallows, could be a free agent this offseason — making Stearns' presence at his game potentially highly notable. ... In the event that Alonso opts out and leaves as a free agent, it's conceivable Murakami could be his replacement at first base."

At 25 years old, Murakami is the most promising Japanese professional likely to head stateside as a free agent this offseason. He has emerged as a Nippon Professional Baseball superstar in his eight-season career, with a .273/.394/.543 slash line and 246 homers.
As a result, he is likely to garner a significant contract when he joins Major League Baseball.
"He's already a two-time Nippon Professional Baseball MVP," Steven Adams noted for MLB Trade Rumors. "Age and track record alone make him a candidate for a nine-figure deal, and a big enough performance could see him push for $200MM+ or even $300MM+, following in (Yoshinobu) Yamamoto's footsteps."
Murakami hit a walk-off home run with Stearns in attendance on Tuesday. And that might be a sign of things to come for the Mets as Alonso heads toward a contract opt-out.

Mets suffer yet another devastating loss as season seemingly slipping away

The free-falling New York Mets suffered what might have been their worst loss of the season (so far?) on Wednesday night, Aug. 13, when they blew a six-run lead and fell to the Atlanta Braves 11-6. After reeling off a seven-game winning streak from July 20-27, the Mets have now lost 12 of their past 14 games and have gone from leading the National League East division by 1½ games to trailing the first-place Philadelphia Phillies by 5. "We've had some tough ones, but I wouldn't say worst loss of the season," manager Carlos Mendoza said. "They all count the same, but it sucks to lose a game when you're up six right away." After snapping a seven-game skid the night before, the Mets appeared to have found some momentum against a fading Braves team. Pete Alonso, who became the Mets' all-time home run leader on Tuesday, drove in two runs in the first inning, and Juan Soto hit a two-run homer in the second as New York pounced on Atlanta starter Carlos Carrasco. But the Braves erased that six-run deficit by scoring nine times in the fourth inning, capped by a grand slam from Michael Harris II. "We have got coaches right now looking at pretty much everything," Mendoza said. "Trying to figure out how we can continue to help these guys, especially the guys from the rotation because we know the talent is there." Despite their struggles, the Mets (64-56) would still make the playoffs if the season ended today. They're one game ahead of the Cincinnati Reds for the NL's final wild card spot. Braves defeat Mets 11-6 as Michael Harris II's grand slam caps 9-run inning

Michael Harris II hit a grand slam Wednesday night to cap Atlanta's biggest inning in almost five years — a nine-run outburst in the fourth that propelled the Braves to an 11-6 comeback win over the slumping New York Mets. The Braves fell behind 6-0 in a game delayed 95 minutes by rain before storming back against David Peterson and Reed Garrett (3-5). Peterson issued four free passes in the fourth, including a bases-loaded walk of Nick Allen, and gave up Jurickson Profar's three-run double before Marcell Ozuna greeted Garrett with an RBI single. Three batters later, Harris hit a 417-foot homer to straightaway center. The nine-run inning was the biggest for the Braves since Sept. 9, 2020, when they scored 11 times in the second inning of a 29-9 win over the Miami Marlins. Ozuna hit a two-run homer in the sixth. Aaron Bummer (2-2), the first of five Braves relievers to follow Carlos Carrasco, tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Carrasco gave up six runs in two innings. Pete Alonso had a two-run single and Cedric Mullins lofted a sacrifice fly in the first before Juan Soto hit a 407-foot, two-run homer and Jeff McNeil had an RBI double in the second. Peterson surrendered a season-high six runs over a season-low 3 1/3 innings. The Mets have lost 12 of 14. Harris' grand slam was his first since last Aug. 14. The Mets gave up at least nine runs in an inning for the ninth time in franchise history and the first since Apr. 16, 2019, when the Philadelphia Phillies scored 10 runs in the first inning of a 14-3 win. The three-game series concludes Thursday night, when Mets RHP Kodai Senga (7-4, 2.30 ERA) opposes Braves RHP Bryce Elder (4-9, 6.12).
