AAP govt working for welfare of people, says Punjab CM Mann

Chandigarh, Jul 30 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday said his government has been working to ensure welfare of people and accused the previous regimes of never bothering about them.
Mann was addressing a gathering here after handing over appointment letters to 942 employees of the forest department whose services have been regularized.
The chief minister said it gives him immense satisfaction to announce the state government has regularized their services by overcoming all legal and administrative hiccups.
'From today onwards the word contractual will be forever eliminated from before the name of these employees, who have given their precious years to the government while serving," he added.
Mann said he has been blessed that people of the state have reposed trust in him, adding he will make every effort to uphold this faith.
He said his government is making every effort to ensure the state's holistic development and prosperity of its people.
Targeting the previous governments, the chief minister alleged that successive governments had 'befooled" people by giving incentives in the last year of their terms but his regime has worked from day one to ameliorate the hardships faced by people.
He said the previous governments looted people and never bothered about their well-being.
Mann claimed his government is, however, working from day one to ensure the welfare of people of the state.
He said the sectors like health, education, power, water and infrastructure are the top five priorities of his government and no stone is being left unturned for it.
The chief minister said this is in consonance with the Constitution, which talks about the well-being of all, adding that priorities were different during the previous regimes.
These leaders worried about their families instead of worrying about the welfare of people and plundered the state exchequer, he alleged.
Launching a scathing attack on the Opposition, Mann said these people had 'mercilessly plundered" the money of Punjabis just for their families without bothering about the common man.
He said the policies are now for the first time being framed for the state's welfare and prosperity of its people, adding this is a history in itself.
The chief minister alleged that the drug mafia was 'patronized" by the earlier governments but his government has launched a crusade against drugs.
Mann said that meticulous planning has been done to wipe out the menace of drugs from the state and the war against drugs has now begun in a full-fledged manner. PTI CHS AS AS

SC to hear plea on J&K statehood on August 8

NEW DELHI The Supreme Court will take up on Friday an application seeking restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir in a timebound manner. On Tuesday, the application was mentioned by senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan appearing for the two applicants, academic Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and social activist Khurshaid Ahmad Malik. (Getty Images/iStockphoto) The hearing in the top court came amid speculation of possible restoration of statehood to J&K after a tweet posted by chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday sharing his 'gut feeling' that he is 'optimistic' about 'something positive' for the Union territory during Parliament's ongoing monsoon session. On August 5, 2019 the state was bifurcated into two Union territories following the abrogation of Article 370 by Parliament. On Tuesday, the application was mentioned by senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan appearing for the two applicants, academic Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and social activist Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, who had in October 2024 approached the top court to consider restoration of statehood within a specific time frame, preferably within two months. Appearing before a bench headed by chief justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R Gavai, the senior advocate said that the matter is showing on the list of business for August 8 and requested that the same should not be deleted. The CJI allowed the request by passing a short order, 'Not to be deleted'. A five-judge Constitution bench of the top court had on December 11, 2023 unanimously upheld the revocation of Article 370 and directed state elections to be conducted by September 2024. The application has been filed in the previously concluded 'In Re: Article 370 of the Constitution' case. Following elections held in three phases from September 18 to October 1 last year, a new government was formed by the National Conference-Congress alliance. National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah was sworn in as chief minister. The verdict by the Constitution bench called the abrogation the 'culmination of the process of integration' of the erstwhile state into the Union of India. It held the abrogation to be a perfectly valid exercise of power by the President, ruling that Article 370 was always meant to be a temporary provision. However, on the issue of restoration of statehood, the court chose not to give a ruling on whether the reorganisation of the state into two Union territories was constitutionally permissible. It pointed to the Centre's statement that statehood of J&K would be restored eventually. The judgment emphasised that the same should be done 'at the earliest'. The application filed through advocate Soyaib Qureshi said, 'The non-restoration of the status of statehood of Jammu & Kashmir in a timebound manner violates the idea of federalism which forms a part of the basic structure of the Constitution of India.' It further stated that the prolonged Union territory status is unwarranted and calls for prompt action in accordance with the assurance given by the Centre in earlier proceedings.

‘Federalise Washington DC': Trump, Musk Land On Same Page After DOGE Staff Attacked

Last Updated: Donald Trump and Elon Musk said that a DOGE staffer was attacked in Washington DC. Both shared the same opinion to federalise the capital city. US President Donald Trump on Tuesday confirmed that a DOGE member was attacked by 'a bunch of thugs" in Washington DC, and warned to federalise the city and run it 'the way it's supposed to be run". Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who headed the DOGE for approximately five months in Trump 2.0, also said that a 'team member" was attacked and called to federalise DC. The victim of the attack that took place early Sunday morning around 3 am in the city's Logan Circle neighborhood was identified as Edward Coristine, who also goes by the nickname 'Big Balls", news agency AP reported. The incident occurred when a group of teenagers attempted to carjack him and a woman whom police identified as his significant other. 'Somebody from DOGE was very badly hurt last night… A young man who was beaten up by a bunch of thugs in D.C. Either they're going to straighten their act out, or we're going to have to federalise and run it the way it's supposed to be run," Trump told reporters. In a social media post, Trump pointed to the rising crime in the US Capital city and said that he will exert his powers if this goes on. 'Crime in Washington, D.C., is totally out of control. Local 'youths" and gang members, some only 14, 15, and 16 years old, are randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent Citizens, at the same time knowing that they will be almost immediately released. They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it's going to happen now! If this continues, I am going to exert my powers and FEDERALIZE this City. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" Trump said on Truth Social. Elon Musk Reacts Musk earlier said that a gang of nearly a dozen young men attempted to assault a woman in her car at night in DC, however, the DOGE team member saw it happening and 'ran to defend her and was severely beaten to the point of concussion, but he saved her". 'It is time to federalize DC," he wrote on X. Police Arrest 2 For Crime DC Police arrested a 15-year-old boy and girl from Maryland on charges of unarmed carjacking, The Washington Post reported, citing a release by the department. The duo was held at the city's youth detention center. This is the latest attack on a federal staffer in Washington. Earlier in June, 21-year-old congressional intern Eric Tarpinian-Jachym was killed in crossfire near the District's convention center, the report said. view comments Location : Washington D.C., United States of America (USA) First Published: August 06, 2025, 09:07 IST News world 'Federalise Washington DC': Trump, Musk Land On Same Page After DOGE Staff Attacked Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
