MANCHESTER UNITED are making hush-hush checks about a remarkable return for keeper and club legend David de Gea.
The Red Devils have been tipped off that the Spaniard, 34, has a clause in his deal at Fiorentina — allowing him to leave for a relatively small sum.

Now discreet background calls are being made after De Gea made a good impression on his return to Old Trafford for a friendly last weekend and told fans their 'paths may cross again'.
Ahead of their opener with Arsenal, boss Ruben Amorim has kept Andre Onana guessing over whether he will be his No.1 this term.
Amorim said: 'It is like the other players. They all have to win their place. I am not going to say if one guy is number one.'
De Gea made 545 appearances for United between 2011 and 2023, putting him seventh on their all-time list.
But a dip in form and a contract dispute led to his exit, then former boss Erik ten Hag paid £43.8million to Inter Milan for Onana.
De Gea was without a club for the entire 2023-24 season but his hunger and form has returned at Fiorentina.
United ideally need Onana, 29, or Turkish back-up stopper Altay Bayindir to leave to free up wages.
But they could still find a way to accommodate him if De Gea was cheap enough.

He was presented with a framed picture by former teammate Bruno Fernandes during a pre-season friendly, which finished 1-1, between United and Fiorentina.
De Gea then posted on Instagram: 'A magical moment for me and my family to come back to Old Trafford — my home.

'From the bottom of my heart — I want to say thank you for the reception — for all the love you showed me.
'To the supporters that never stopped being with me throughout my time at this club. Our paths may cross again.'
Cameroon international Onana is expected to start against the Gunners on Sunday, despite missing all of pre-season with a hamstring injury.
United have been linked with several goalkeepers this summer leading to speculation he may be replaced.
Among them are Emi Martinez of Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma and John Victor of Botafogo.

However, Amorim showed faith in the former Inter man during some tough times last season and there has been no new stopper signed this summer.
The Portuguese added: 'He is ready to go to the game. Let's wait. You will know on Sunday.
'Myself as a coach, the players who were here last year, we can do better. I have full confidence on that.'
Onana returned to training at the beginning of the week after getting an injury in early July.
Bayindir, 27, was expected to be sold this summer but has ended up deputising during their unbeaten build up to the season.
Antwerp's Senne Lammens, 23, was on United's list but he is now in talks with Inter.

Under new legislation, goalkeepers are now required to release the ball after eight seconds or less. Should a stopper hang on to it for longer, the opposing team is awarded a corner. And set-piece king Arteta showed he was ready to immediately manipulate the rule with a cheeky new tactic. Underwhelming Chelsea settle for draw against Palace draw at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea made an underwhelming start to the Premier League season as Crystal Palace ground out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge. After a truncated pre-season following victory in the Club World Cup, everything pointed to a Chelsea side lacking both preparation and rest as Oliver Glasner's team coped relative easily with a new-look yet disjointed attack. Eberechi Eze started for Palace despite speculation he is about to leave and, if there were doubts about how supporters felt about the player whose goal won them the FA Cup in May, they were dispelled when he was substituted to a standing ovation late on. The England international provided the game with its only major talking point, lashing in a brilliant free-kick in the first half that was ruled out after Marc Guehi obstructed Chelsea's wall, drawing a furious response from Palace fans. As expected, Nicolas Jackson was not in Enzo Maresca's squad after being made surplus to requirements, with Newcastle considering a bid, while Joao Pedro was preferred at number nine to fellow new signing Liam Delap. Chelsea were playing 35 days after their win over Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup final in the United States and showed signs of mental fatigue in a first-half display low on creativity. Marc Cucurella had the first of their only two chances, his near-post header looping towards the far corner where it was nodded off the line by the leaping Ismaila Sarr. Eze looked to have obliged the headline writers after 15 minutes with an unstoppable free-kick that flew through the middle of the Chelsea wall and in, only for a VAR check to reveal Guehi had unfairly forced Moises Caicedo out of the ball's path. Moments later Jean-Philippe Mateta broke into the box but shot too close to Robert Sanchez, who bounced the effort to safety. There was little worthy of home fans' enthusiasm in attack in the first half, but they showed raucous appreciation for a wonderfully-timed, full-blooded tackle on Daniel Munoz by 19-year-old Josh Acheampong, making a third Premier League start in central defence, with Levi Colwill a long-term absentee and Wesley Fofana not risked. With Maresca having been told to seek internal solutions to his lack of defensive options, the academy graduate staked a convincing claim for regular game time with a display of maturity and fulsome grit that was warmly received by an otherwise subdued crowd. The best Chelsea chance of the half fell to Trevoh Chalobah, who fired high from eight yards after good work from debutant Jamie Gittens. Estevao Willian came on in the 53rd minute for a debut and, with his first action, breezed past Guehi in a foot race down the right before crossing brilliantly for Enzo Fernandez, who failed to make good contact. The Brazil international, still only 18 despite the hype surrounding his arrival from Palmeiras, betrayed his inexperience minutes later when striking wildly over the bar when off balance before being booked for lunging at Munoz. Eze was again almost the story when he drilled at goal and brought a two-handed save from Sanchez, then at the other end substitute Delap shot straight at Dean Henderson.
