Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Orders Immediate Filling Of Vacant Teacher Posts
In a post on social media, Mr Kumar said he has directed the Education Department to immediately count teacher vacancies in government schools and expedite the process to conduct the Teachers Recruitment Examination (TRE) 4. He also reiterated that 35% reservation in teacher appointments would be exclusively applicable to women domiciled in Bihar.
In another significant move, the chief minister announced that starting August 1, 2025, applicable from the electricity bill for July, all domestic consumers in the state will receive up to 125 units of electricity free of cost. This scheme is expected to benefit around 1.67 crore households in Bihar.
To promote clean energy, Mr Kumar said that over the next three years, rooftop or nearby public-site solar panels will be installed for these households, based on their consent. For families under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana, a scheme for the poorest, the state government will bear the entire cost of solar installations. Others will also receive government support for solar setups.
According to Kumar, the initiative could help Bihar generate an estimated 10,000 megawatts of solar power in three years, significantly boosting the state's renewable energy capacity while reducing power costs for families.

Parliamentary panel urges Centre to fill 10 lakh teaching vacancies in SSA-funded schools
NEW DELHI: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education has called upon the Education Department to fill up the 10 lakh teaching posts lying vacant in the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)-funded schools of various States. Nearly 7.5 lakh posts are found in the elementary and primary levels of these National Education Mission schools. The Committee, chaired by MP Digvijaya Singh, and comprising 31 Lok Sabha MPs and 10 Rajya Sabha MPs, tabled its report in the Lower House on August 8 and submitted it in the Upper House the same day. This is the 368th report of the committee and is on the topic, 'The functioning of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and initiatives taken to support training of teachers in light of NEP 2020's thrust on Capacity Building of Teachers.' There was no improvement in filling up of vacancy positions in these SSA-funded schools of the state Governments despite repeated recommendations by the Committee in its 349th and 363rd Reports to fill them in a time-bound manner, the Committee emphasised. The vacancy situation 'is worsening day by day due to the retirement of teachers and due to the absence of a permanent recruitment policy.' The panel, therefore, recommended to the Education Department 'to take up the matter of vacancies of teachers in SSA-funded schools of the State Governments strongly." The teachers' salary component of SSA funds of those States which do not comply with the directions of the Department to fill up the vacancies should be kept in abeyance till the respective States comply with the directives of the Centre, it added.

J&K: Soldier killed in Uri as Army foils LoC infiltration bid; Chinar Corps expressed 'deepest condolences'
SRINAGAR: Havildar Ankit Kumar of 9 Bihar Regiment was killed early Wednesday while fighting armed intruders near the Loc in Uri sector of north Kashmir's Baramulla district — the third Army fatality in five days in counterterrorism operations, raising the year's security death toll in J&K to 17. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Army's 15 Corps, or Chinar Corps, confirmed on social media the death of Kumar, 35, and expressed 'deepest condolences' to the bereaved family. Sources said the infiltration bid was foiled, but the intruders exploited poor visibility and monsoon rain to retreat into PoK. It was the first such attempt in Uri since Operation Sindoor in early May when heavy Pakistani firing and shelling followed India's destruction of terrorist infrastructure in PoK and Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam massacre that left 22 people dead, most of them tourists. 'This is clear proof that old patterns of infiltration attempts backed by Pakistan will persist,' said Luv Puri, former UN counterterrorism official and Kashmir analyst. 'In the current climate where renewed US-Pakistan engagement is being discussed, the purpose of the infiltration attempt seems to be to signal that nothing has changed and that shifting geopolitical winds may only have emboldened them to make this point. ' The Uri clash came a day after the Army ended an 11-day offensive in south Kashmir's Kulgam district, where two soldiers — Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh of 19 Rashtriya Rifles — were killed and 10 personnel wounded before a terrorist was shot dead. Of the 17 security personnel killed in J&K operations this year, four have died in Kashmir and 13 in Jammu division. Security forces have killed 14 terrorists in Kashmir so far in 2025, among them three top Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives linked to the Pahalgam attack, gunned down in Srinagar on July 28. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Tight security is in place for Independence Day events across Kashmir valley, with intensified patrols along the border. On Monday, soldier Banoth Anil Kumar died after falling into a deep gorge during a routine patrol near the LoC in Uri sector. He was from Telangana.

Activists stage protest against US tariffs
Activists from 'Praja Sanghala Iyka Vedhika,' comprising of various trade unions, staged a protest in the city on Wednesday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the 50% tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian exports. The members also urged the Prime Minister to break his silence on the issue. Speaking at the protest, CITU district general secretary R.K.S.V. Kumar and AITUC district president M. Manmadha Rao criticised the Modi-led BJP government for failing to oppose the move, even though President Trump imposed higher tariffs on India than on any other country, including neighbouring China and Pakistan. They warned that the tariff will severely impact the national economy, affecting sectors like textiles, gems, jewellery, seafood, aquaculture, leather, footwear, chemicals, electrical, mechanical machinery and others.
